For a Scottish holiday of big skies and rolling heather hills, stay at this inviting cottage in the heart of the Lowther Hills, overlooking Wanlockhead – Scotland’s highest village. The three-bedroom home is perfect for nature-loving families or groups, located around 1 mile south of Leadhills at the head of the Mennock Pass. The scenery here is nothing short of spectacular, with fabulous walking routes on the Southern Upland Way and breathtaking drives through the Mennock Pass. The local lead mining museum (50 metres) is a must-visit, featuring underground mine tours, exhibitions and seasonal gold panning. Less than 0.3mile is a welcoming dog-friendly pub serving up hearty fare all day, while Leadhills (2 miles) has a local village shop . Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens (14.5 miles) makes a lovely outing. Despite its tranquil feel, the cottage is only 7.5 miles from J13 and J14 of the M74, making arrivals and bigger trips straightforward.
Step into a small entrance porch and through to the hallway, where a single bedroom sits to the right. To the left, the cosy lounge comes with a wood burner and patio doors opening out to the enclosed rear patio. An open doorway from the lounge leads into the kitchen and dining area, where you can share meals and spend laid-back mornings. Also accessed from the lounge is a small hall that takes you to the ground-floor bathroom, which has a shower over a bath. Head back to the main hallway and upstairs to find the spacious king-size master bedroom with its own en-suite shower room. Across the landing is a comfortable double bedroom, which also has an en-suite shower room.
From the lounge, head out to the enclosed rear patio, which enjoys lovely hillside views, providing a peaceful spot for morning coffee or evening relaxation in the fresh upland air. Parking is available opposite the house for two to three cars.
