Great place! My friends and I have been coming here from Chicago for the 3rd time. We were there in 2023, 2024 and now! Always cozy, clean and wonderful hosts!
My family and I had an absolute blast! We stayed for 4 nights. The cabin is quaint and cozy and the electricity is also nice for modern conveniences when you have kids. We had one cold rainy day so it was nice to head in and explore Ely and went to the Bear Museum.
We had an excellent time. Perfect setup for a family of 4. Just a short ride to town and Grand Ely Lodge made it a perfect balance of seclusion, while still being able to enjoy a dinner out.
We will be back!
Wonderful location and accommodations unfortunately the lake was about 5 foot higher than normal

Thanks so much for staying with us, and we glad you enjoyed the island and cabin. Indeed, unfortunately you had to deal with high water levels resulting from historic rainfalls.
The cabin is absolutely adorable and well appointed. The location is the best of both worlds - privacy while on the island but within close proximity of town. Also, Dave the caretaker is a gem! Already thinking about next time....

We really appreciate your stay at Loon Island, and we hope you come again!
Just the right amount of adventure for us. The property was awesome. Of course we had great weather but was a fantastic trip for us. The house was in great shape and had all the amenities we needed. Thanks to Dave for all his help!

We are glad you enjoyed your stay! Thank you so much for your review. We are glad you appreciate the island as much as we do.
Great vacation with great fishing in the boundary waters (we had 3 amazing fishing days with Mike Stark with Ely fishing co). Only thing that could be a touch better would be a slightly bigger motor boat (was a bit small when all 4 of us were in it). Great host

Thank you Pavil, we are glad you had a great stay. We provide the the 14 foot fishing boat and brand new motor with 2 gallons of gas as part of the rental, which has $400 a week value. There are options around the lake to rent larger fishing boats for $500 or more a week.
The cabin is situated with no other cabins in view. Beautifully decorated Minnesota Cabin thats extremely functional. The boat was perfect for this lake even with high winds you can easily get around. The wildlife on the island made the trip. We cant wait to come back.

So peaceful. The cabin was perfect had everything we needed. Listening to the loons everyday made my summer complete. Getting to and from the island is very easy we ate at the lodge food was very good . Had my first old fashioned. The staff at the lodge were very helpful and friendly. We hopefully can get back someday.
Very nice cabin and super location. Got lucky with the Northern lights and beautiful weather. Bed is comphy.
It's as described with being "off grid" but it certainly isn't roughing it. Its luxury camping for sure. Kitchen is well equipped and we did most meals over a week on site.
Lake had significant algae while we were there. Miners lake close by was great for a dip.
We had an amazing time staying at the cabin on Loon Island. The cabin is beautiful, and is in fantastic condition. It has a full kitchen with all the pots, pans, plates, utensils, etc. you will need for cooking. The solar powered lights work extremely well, and we never had an issue using lights at night and charging devices during the day/night. Showering is simple using the collected rain water in the barrels outside and a battery powered shower head.Having the boat is awesome, and works very well for fishing and simply exploring the lake. It's a small motor so you won't be zipping around the lake, but it serves its purpose very well. We also enjoyed using the paddle boat and canoe.Outside the cabin there is also a firepit with a grill attachment that we loved to use, a charcoal grill, and a gas grill. There are a couple different places to hangout and have great views of the sunset as well. It is incredibly peaceful listening to the loons as the sun goes down.We had no issues organizing our stay with Neil and the caretaker Rob, and it was very easy checking in and out.Overall, our stay was wonderful. It exceeded our expectations, and we will definitely be back.
The property is exactly as described. We were looking for a boundary waters "light" experience as we are getting a little older and struggle with the full wilderness adventure. This cabin fit the bill perfectly.
We enjoyed how fully stocked and appropriated the cabin was for being off the grid. We were able to cook numerous delicious meals. There was plenty of water, TP, paper towels, bedding and towels.
We used the provided boat daily as we went fishing and into Ely for a fun day. We hooked up the trolling motor to help maneuver the boat while fishing.
Overall, it was a very relaxing week on Loon Island. If you are looking for an off the grid experience, this place is for you. But you can still turn on the lights for a while and make some toast!
Very nice cabin. Clean and well kept. Having the John boat and canoe were a nice bonus seeing we were on an island. Lol. Host was very responsive and Rob was too. While we were there it got cold, so we needed to use the gas burner cast iron heating unit. Couldn’t get it lit and they were very helpful on that. Reading the instructions became helpful. Another knee slapper. Push in the knob while igniting with the pilot button. The instructions were on the floor attached to the legs. Hard to read, so maybe put those instructions in the great information binder that was there. Unfortunately for us, the four days we were there it got cold, windy, and rainy. Just kept coming at us. Late in the season I guess. We thought to use the john-boat with trawling motor and regular motor to fish and go into Ely, but with water and rain, we hunkered down. Great overall experience.
My husband and I booked over Labor Day weekend through the week. The cabin and little island were just perfect! I love the way Neil has carved out little areas to capture all the beauty surrounding you in Shagawa. The hammock area for reading or napping! The sunset sitting spot (perfect to share some wine and star gaze)! The fire pit area to host a small gathering of family to toast marshmallows and eat chili!! Perfection! The cabin is well appointed and cozy. We were very comfortable thru some wild weather and temperature swings! The provided boat allowed us easy access to Ely and all the fun there too! Couldn’t be more pleased! Also, caretakers Rob and Lee were friendly, responsive to questions and super helpful. FIVE sparkly stars!! Thank you!!
My husband and I recently got married and wanted a few days to relax, have little human contact, and spend some time outdoors. And this property absolutely delivered.
Dave, the caretaker, was super easy to contact and always answered quickly whenever we reached out with questions before our stay. He helped load and unload all of our things as well, which was unnecessary but much appreciated.
There was plenty of water provided for our 3 night stay. And even though it was cloudy, we had no issues with using the solar power to charge phones and to have the lights on for a few hours at night. The linens were clean, and the property was well kept.
Our only complaint is that the fishing was better around the lake, but we heard everyone was having a hard time so we just enjoyed dinner at the Grand Ely Lodge one night instead of fish.
If you’re looking for a place to disconnect, drink coffee in nature (while being close to civilization) and relax. Then this is your place. Definitely going to come back someday.

We are so glad you had a great time on your mini-moon! The exceptional drought and heat has no doubt affected the fishing. Please come and try your luck again!
Everything was wonderful again this trip. Dave who picks you up is a great guy and willing to answer any questions and help out however he can.
The cabin is outfitted with everything you need and the boat is perfect for the lake.
Thanks again! And we’ll be back for sure.
We really enjoyed our time on Loon Island. The cabin was spectacular as was the quality of our stay. We enjoyed fishing with the provided motorboat and enjoyed a few walleye dinners. We left feeling restored and reset. Thank you!
Such gracious hosts! Thank you for the celebratory treats upon arrival 😊 So thoughtful and lovely. My husband and I loved getting to experience island living and off-grid simple living. Looking forward to our next stay! Thank you thank you!
I'm a Minnesotan, born and raised. My spouse is French and I've been living in France for the past 20 years. This little island is my piece of home in the United States, and renting it out makes it possible to keep it for the long-term and for us to use if for our own vacations. I have always had a passion for nature.
Why they chose this property
Loon Island is the largest of the three sisters, as locals call the group of three islands in the middle of Shagawa lake in Ely, Minnesota. Shagawa Lake is beautiful, and although it's in town, a significant portion of the shoreline is state and federal property, so it's not that developed. It's a lake that is considered by fishing guides to be one of the best fishing lakes around. I like that it's a relatively big lake, but not too big. You can boat around in a couple of hours, and there are restaurants we can go to by boat and also a public beach, Semer's beach, we go to a lot. I love the sunsets. Last year we built a nice sunset spot to be able to better enjoy the sunsets. I like sitting on the dock and doing late-night fishing, looking at the stars and listening to the loons. I also love Ely, Minnesota. When I was younger I would go camping up north with my friends, and I got to know this wonderful community nestled on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). I love discovering new places and trails, and learning more about nature, as well as picking blueberries, chokecherries, pin cherries, cooking on the fire pit, and just getting away from it all.
What makes this property unique
The property is a private island in the middle of the lake. It is not at all the typical experience people normally have when they rent a property. In 2016, I was looking to build the cabin. I knew exactly what I wanted and I had an architect I know from the Czech Republic, Petr Čermák, come up with the plans based on a sketch I did. I was looking for someone to build the cabin, and it was tough, as no big company would do it, and it was complicated by being on an island. My cousin, who is a master carpenter, introduced me to his former boss, Mike Olson, who had sold his company and was in between gigs. He was really interested in the opportunity to learn how to do a flat log cabin and dovetail joinery, so he took on the project. He lived on the island building the cabin for the entire summer, sleeping in a hammock, cooking on the fire pit (which oddly was the very first thing I put in on the island). So many people from the community ended up getting involved in the building of the cabin in one way or another. It was an enormous project. The result is a very beautiful cabin that was built with love and care by a master craftsman. I am proud that we have an off-grid solar system. We don't have enough electricity for people to behave as if they were at home with unlimited resources, but there's enough for lights, charging devices, and eventually making toast and using the coffee maker. As we have no running water, things take a bit more time. You have to heat up water on the stove to do dishes and to take a shower, but we have found innovative means to make things comfortable, like a shower head with a built in pump (I was initially surprised. it existed!). We have added things to make the cabin more enjoyable over the years, like a good aluminum canoe, an inflatable kayak, a quiet generator as a backup, and more. This is a really special place for my family and for our guests.
