Pleasant cottage with mice on busy highway

The cottage itself was comfortable, with a good size master bedroom, large walk-in closet, small bathroom with shower/tub. The kitchen was very serviceable and stocked with paper towels, napkins, salt and pepper, and the cooking and eating utensils were serviceable. (The refrigerator froze all the food at first, but responded to turning down the thermostat.) The upstairs had one bedroom with two beds and two beds in the hallway overlooking the downstairs. The bathroom upstairs had a shower that was only 3 feet high due to the slope roof. There was no sound insulation between the first and second floors - the ceiling of the first floor was the floor boards of the second. We saw two live mice and two dead ones, and heard the scurrying and gnawing of more. The property manager put out three traps, which were clearly insufficient to address the problem. A large deck had a nice view of the area, but the deck was completely peeled or peeling, with popped nails and splintered wood. The view of Mount Princeton in the distance was partially obscured by a fence and bush that presumably were there to screen the dilapidated "river boat" that was one of the structures on the property. All of these other structures were completed boarded up, with a warning to not investigate. The property is directly in a curve of a busy highway, so there are constant traffic sounds on two sides, which are heard inside and out. On the plus side, it is only 10-15 minutes outside of Buena Vista, a lovely town with good restaurants and shopping. Hiking trails and many recreational opportunities abound in the area.

One of our more interesting stays

Overall we had a very nice stay here. But we had never stayed at former museum/tourist attraction before. It’s a huge property, 30 acres located on an old section of abandoned railroad. It’s about 9 miles from buena vista so you know you’re out a way. Definitely could feel some of the history. It was kind of hot the two nights we stayed and there is no air conditioning. I found out that a/c isn’t as common in mountain properties. But it’s clean and lots of amenities. It was nice to have a place where we could walk around a bit.

We had some issues with entering the property and contacting the property manager but he was very understanding and accommodating. We would happily stay there again. It was a great place to rest and it was close to Buena Vista and our activities.

My adult son and I stayed here for four nights to do some hiking and play guitar and banjo and it was perfect. From the spacious deck we look out on a 14,000 mountain. Fantastic property.

This location was exactly what we needed. We were just off of the highway. When booking this and working through this program, which was the first time I have done this. There seemed to be a delay. As we didn't know what to expect, we arrived, I asked a few questions which didn't get addressed until the day of. I also had a follow up question for the property manager which never got a response from, but was able to locate it in a book which was located at the property. Our group had ample accommodations which was nice. We will be coming back to this area another time. Thanks for everything.

A Hidden Gem Tucked in the Collegiate Peaks

This is a great getaway nestled in between Buena Vista and Salida. A fully stocked kitchen lets the home cooker create a complete meal after exploring the property or the area. Great sleeping areas, master bedroom, and bathrooms with powerful water pressure. The entire place was clean and decorated with a Victorian feel meets western. Stayed for 3 days and explored local towns, hot springs, and white water rafting. Would book this location again for a longer stay. Easy communication with manager about property details.

Summer Cottage & Historic Base Camp

Beautiful surroundings right off Trout Creek Pass, with a gorgeous, breath-taking view of Mt. Princeton that never gets old! Surrounded by historic buildings built by the Kjeldsen family on the site of Trout City, a small way station on the narrow gauge railroad that went up to St. Elmo in the late 1890's. The site is a museum-in-the-making with old rail cars from the B-n-B and the McGee's Depot, Mercantile and church give the feel of staying in your own private ghost town. My friend and I stayed in the Cottage, a two-story, quaint and cozy respite from all of our daytime activities. We hiked the property into the San Isabel National Forest and had quite the adventure coming down the other side of Juel's hill, that overlooks the property. We went white-water rafting in Johnson's Village- just 6 miles down the pass at the headwaters of class 3-5 whitewater at the head of the Arkansas River. The trip through Brown's Canyon was just long enough, and the combo package with a soak in the Mountain Princeton Hot Springs was the perfect day! Until we woke up the next day and took a class 4, four-wheel drive road from the cottage all the way into Salida to eat pizza (sorry 'bout that, brand new Nissan Equinox rental - going over Aspen Ridge was a hoot) and then back to Buena Vista to soak in the Cottonwood Hot Springs. The point is, the cottage is the perfect place for staging your Colorado adventure with comfy beds and showers/baths to wash off the day's adventures. We only had four-days- so stay a week and you can do more! Highly recommend this unique, one-of-a-kind spot. We'll be back at Spring Break!

Place was great for us!!! Very quiet and out all by itself. Love the surroundings of the cottage. Only thing I have recommended to Mr.Terry was to ask owners for a barbecue place for the cottage. He is going to recommend it. Our overall stay was great. We have been coming up to Buena Vista for my entire life. We just love the area! I do hope all families will be able to come up for a visit of peace and wonderful surroundings and wildlife!!! Thank you all so very much!!! I wish all people’s great vacations and joyful times!!!
