About this property

Peaceful Lake Retreat for up to 16 guests featuring gorgeous fall foliage.

This large family home is a hidden gem in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains with mountain views to the north and west above the lake. Nestled on the western shore of Chattooga Lake, this quaint home is a private compound for your family retreat or getaway with a group of small families or friends! This 6-bedroom, 3-bath house in a private, gated community, has a living room, family room, fully-equipped large kitchen, a long deck overlooking the lake with several small seating areas, and a sprawling screened porch large enough for everyone to sit down for meals or to enjoy your downtime after hiking, fishing, or playing in the pristine lake. Three bedrooms are upstairs and three are downstairs, making it convenient to have the adults upstairs and the kids downstairs or for one or two families to inhabit each floor.

The home easily sleeps 16 people; 14 in beds and two on a sofa sleeper with a 4-inch memory foam mattress (new in April 2019 and rarely used). We provide many items for your stay, including plenty of bath towels, sheets, lake/beach towels, propane for the grill, flashlights, kayaks, three standup paddleboards, numerous lake floats, and five 2-person hammocks. Also provided are typical baking essentials, many common spices, basic kitchen condiments, and all of the ingredients needed to make s'mores.

Enjoy the new two-story dock with a jumping platform on the upper level for the adventuresome. There's plenty of space to sit and relax on the dock in the sun or shade and watch or join in water activities. Come sit by the fire, roast marshmallows and gaze at the stars after an enjoyable day on the lake! Chattooga Lake is home to an abundant number of birds, ducks, bass, and carp fish. No fishing license is required since we are a private lake.

Enjoy plenty of local hiking right out the front door. Isaqueena Falls and the Stumphouse Tunnel are only 7.4 miles down the mountain It's just a short drive to numerous other hiking areas and waterfalls. Day trips to Highlands, NC, or even rafting on the Chattooga River await you! Come enjoy all that the lower Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer in this mountain home on a private lake that is definitely a break from city life. The nearest grocery store is about 25 minutes away, so come prepared with a day or two of food, because the isolation of our home in the mountains is what we think makes it such a wonderful vacation getaway! We look forward to welcoming you to your home away from home!

Family Weekend
This was the second time we spent a long weekend at the Workman house on beautiful Chattooga Lake. All fourteen of us were excited to go back and enjoy the lake activities which include swimming, floating, paddleboarding, kayaking, and jumping off the most amazing dock! The house is large enough to gather together or to get away from others when you need some quiet time. We had a wonderful weekend!

Family lake trip
This was our second time staying here and we all loved it again. The house is great…. Very spacious and has everything you need. We love the large screen porch . There is also a kitchenette now on the lower level . The kids and adults had fun jumping from the double decker dock and much time was spent fishing, kayaking and on the standup paddle boards. Even the 4 and 6 year olds learned how to kayak and paddle board. The scenery is beautiful and very peaceful. We also enjoyed a fire one night with s’mores.

Lake Chatooga Retreat
Our family loves this home and the lake. It is perfect for us; plenty of room, well furnished, peaceful and quiet. This was our second time staying here and they are already talking about coming again. The dock is definitely a drawing card. We spent many hours playing in the lake and on the dock.

About the host

Hosted by Jeanne & John Workman

Host profile image
This home was built in 1988 by Elinor and Jack Workman, parents/in-laws of the owners, and has been lovingly kept in fabulous condition over the years. We are a South Carolinian, multi-generation family and take great pride in being homeowners in our beautiful Upstate. We have recently retired and decided it would be fun to allow others to enjoy our family home as much as we have.

Why they chose this property

This home has been in our family for over 35 years and was our parents' pride and joy for their retirement. They sought peace and serenity at the lake with just enough interaction within a small community of wonderful neighbors. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to keep it in the family and share it with our guests. We have all the technical amenities, but we hope you will turn off those screens to enjoy nature and everything the lake has to offer.

What makes this property unique

Most owners at Chattooga Lake prefer using only non-motorized boats, so the water is really clear and great for swimming. The fishing is abundant; we appreciate catch and release, please. You do not need a fishing license, as our lake is privately owned by the community. Our neighbors are very helpful and friendly. We are in a secluded community but close enough to enjoy great shopping and meals in Seneca, SC, Clayton, GA, Highlands, NC and Cashiers, NC. Of course, a trip to Clemson for a Tigers game or to the Greenville/Spartanburg area can easily be accomplished in one day.
