Michigan Oasis by the beach

The location is amazing -just in from the beach. The garden is an oasis with everything from cute outdoor shower to fire pit to quiet places to read and watch hummingbirds. The house is immaculate, well equipped and tastefully decorated. This is our second time at the property and are planning on returning next year. Joan is a great host as well.

Loved it!

I stayed here with two adults and a two year old. We loved it! The location is so close to the beach (just a short walk through the gate) you can’t see the beach from the house but it is as close as you can get. It was very clean and the amenities were as listed. Be sure to get donuts at Black Currant Bakehouse and breakfast /lunch sandwiches at the Whistle Stop Grocery, both are about 10 min walk from the vrbo. Would definitely stay here again.

Return Guests!

This was our second stay at Joan's cottage. The cottage is comfortable, well furnished and nicely decorated with personal touches with an inviting fireplace. We made good use of the porch and enjoyed using the fire pit a couple of nights. The location was perfect for our needs, easy walk to the beach which we enjoyed walking on and just sitting and reading. There was more traffic than our first visit due to a detour off the main road routing more traffic by the cottage, but it still was not enough to interfere with a handful of enjoyable bike rides we took in the area. We hope to be back.

Perfect for a Small Family Beach Vacation!!

We very much enjoyed our stay at Shorewinds and it is well worth the rental price. In our six years of visiting Union Pier, this was easily the nicest 1 to 2 bedroom house we’ve stayed in. Upon our arrival, we found the cottage to be very clean, beautifully landscaped and well equipped for a beach vacation. It is right near the entry for a public beach access (which has pretty easy access for Union Pier standards), but any concerns about privacy are solved through the landscaping and a decorative fence. Some of the highlights include: the convenience of a second bathroom, washer/dryer and gas grill; a really nice fire pit that is well protected from wind; and extras like nice beach chairs and nice outdoor seating. The kitchen is fairly large and well equipped. We will certainly look to rent this property again.

Relaxing off-season vacation by the dunes

We had a fantastic stay at Shorewinds cottage. This is the second time we visit the area in March, and love the quite and calm of the off-season. We went hiking at both Indiana Dunes (both state and national parks) and at Warren Dunes. Our little one (almost 2 yrs old) loved walking around the dunes and being carried in her hiking backpack. The weather was cold when we went to Warren Dunes, but that meant we got the whole place almost to ourselves, and were able to snatch some amazing photographs without crowds. Lots of delicious place to eat even in the off-season. We particularly enjoyed brunch at Beer Church and coffee and lunch at David's Deli. The cottage was great - easy check in, clean, well stocked, ample lighting, and with a great host. Having a hyperactive toddler in tow, it was great to not to have to worry about crossing any streets on the way to the beach. If you're looking for a relaxing, disconnecting stay, I'd highly recommend shorewins in the off-season.

Great house for families!

This was our second year in a row at Shorewinds and it's a great vacation house for our family. It's just big enough for the four of us (two kids...age 8 and 5...two adults) and close enough to the beach for the kids to make it there and willingly help carry things! It's close enough to "run" back up and use the bathroom if needed. The "backpack style" beach chairs were a wonderful addition and helped make lugging our things to the beach easier. We used the fire pit for roasting s'mores which was a highlight for the kids, walked down the street for gelato for dessert and for coffee in the morning. We spent most days at the beach (water was perfect!) but also took some day trips in the area as well. We also taught the kids dominos and had a great time playing game after game (in fact, we now have to buy a set for our house!). The owner is extremely responsive and helped immediately when we needed it. The property is clean and well kept. The outdoor shower is very helpful when coming back from the beach. We will definitely be back. The only thing that would make it perfect is if we could bring our dog!

Our 5th Year at Shorewinds

Hard to believe, but every year gets even better! It's my annual treat for my daughter and 2 grandchildren to vacation at the beach staying at Shorewinds. The water is warm ,sandy, and clean. Besides swimming, we spend time looking for beach glass and fossils. One day we even spotted 2 deer walking through the dune grass -- if only we had a camera with us. It was quite exciting and created quite a stir for everyone. Bird watching is a must so bring seed to refill the feeders and make nectar for the hummingbird feeder. You will be rewarded by the array of birds that feed. Besides cardinals, blue jays, chickadees, humminbirds, we say nuthatches, woodpeckers, and a rose breasted grosbeck. Even the kids sit on the porch and enjoy the show provided by our feather friends. Be sure to visit downtown St. Joseph durning your stay. Yearly the town sponsors an outside display of sculptures by various artists. This year's theme was a pirate invasion. Some past year themes were farm animals, fish, and dogs. the kids look forward to it yearly and it presents a great photo op. Also while there, plan to eat at Silver Beach Pizza located at the bottom of the bluff. We ate at night so missed the reported beach views but experienced another treat. We were seated by the open air windows facing the tracks and little did we know that Amtrak still comes until we hear a loud whistle blast announcing the train's arrival and stop. We took pictures as well as the train passengers taking ours. A fun experience for both adults and kids. Their menu is large and includes other items beside pizza. Be sure walk to the Casual Chef Cafe (aka The Pumpernickle) in Union Pier on Red Arrow Highway for lunch (open until 4pm daily) or go there at night for their gelato. More than the food which is good, we just enjoy the easy walk in such a peaceful setting. It’s a tradition for our family. We already have our reservations for next year and needless to say we highly recommend Shorewinds. The place is sparkling clean, very beachy decorating, steps to the beach, and definitely provides a relaxing setting.

Why they chose this property

While developing new home sites in Union Pier under the management of Coastal Concepts Inc.,I fell in love with this little site along the waterfront.
The first time I viewed the property I was so excited when I opened the garden gate and realized I could see the water from the property.
The house is on the shore side of the road and the lot is adjacent to the beach path. The location was unbelieveable, however, the little house had much to be desired. The home went through a major renovation and doubled its size overall.
The porch and pergola are architectural charmers and are very important to the outdoor living! A very private property site was achieved through landscape design. The old garden gate was utilizing and kept for a little bit of the old mixed with the new.
The beach house indeed has its own karma and soul! One feels it from the moment you pull up the pebble stone drive way and walk under the purple flowered pergola and turn the key in the door. The house and grounds exhibit love and care and Shorewinds has its own heart beat and soul.

What makes this property unique

A unique location . Approximately 150 paces to the beach platform! No roads to cross between you , the house and the beach! The location is what you would expect of a premium beach house rental.
