About this property

Modern Rustic Artist's Getaway

I spent a lifetime living and working as a professional fashion photographer in Paris, Milan and New York. My visual sense and European aesthetic is reflected in every room and detail of my 180 year old farmhouse. It is extremely charming and peaceful. I have newly renovated all the windows, as well as the kitchen and bath. Located minutes from Hudson, Great Barrington, Tanglewood, Kripalu and the endless beauty of the Berkshires.

Cute cottage in the Berkshires
We had a great stay in this cottage. It is only one bedroom but there is actually a lot of space. The wifi wasn't as strong as we needed for work so that caused a few problems but overall, the house was lovely and a great location.

Delicious!
A little touch of Europe…just fabulous! Huge amount of space for a one bedroom…and such interesting space at that! The owner, Donna, was very responsive.

Lovely Home!
Donna’s home was lovely. Beautifully designed , spacious, charming details at every turn, and comfortable - we had the perfect weekend! Convenient location. Fenced in back yard for our dog to play in was a plus. Donna was responsive, informative, and very kind!

About the host

Hosted by Donna DeMari

Host profile image
I have been a professional fashion photographer for 45 years, having spent much of my career in NYC as well as fifteen years between Paris, Milan and London. I traveled the world for Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire, amongst other magazines and was the first woman to shoot the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. I also photograph horses and have worked with Ralph Lauren for the past nine years. My equine images decorate the walls of Ralph Lauren stores in almost every country in the world. I have published 6 books and worked for clients such as Neiman Marcus, Anthropologie, and Natori.
Since 2011, I have traveled to India 8 times and have recently started leading photo tours to India. I have a very special connection to India and my house is filled with treasures from that magical country.
I am a huge horse and dog lover/ owner. I have had labrador retrievers and a Dutch Warmblood for 21 years. They were all the loves of my life. I currently have a gorgeous black lab/golden mix,my sweet Finny who is 8 years old.
I am passionate about my work which I still do and honestly, the only reason I am renting out my house is so that I can take care of my Mom who is 88 and recently broke her shoulder. She can no longer be on her own. So I am now living with my Mom and my dog and hoping special people will enjoy my home.

Why they chose this property

I have been blessed to have traveled the world over and there is no place I love more than the Berkshires. (Except maybe Paris or India )
It is beautiful in every season and my life here has been so full of animals and beauty. The natural, untouched landscape has always inspired me and I never tire of it's magic.
I have lived between Great Barrington and Hillsdale for over 25 years and I have the very best of friends who have made my life in the country rich and full. I realized that the Berkshires are exceptional. You lack for nothing in this cultural and sophisticated area.
My house is in a fantastic location. I am officially in New York but the Mass line is just a stone's throw from my front door. Great Barrington just 12 minutes away and I'm equally distant from Hillsdale and Chatham, NY.
If you want to enjoy an evening at Jacob's Pillow, you can easily access the Mass pike from Route 22 and be there in about a half hour's time. Tanglewood and Kripalu are also quite close to me and an easy drive.
I would be happy to tell you where to hike and where to find amazing Indian food. You can go antiquing in Hudson, just 25 minutes from my house or swimming or kayaking on Mount Washington.
I'm crazy about the area and I have lived and traveled to the most beautiful places in the world. But somehow, the Berkshires has given me such peace and serenity in an ever changing beautiful landscape.

What makes this property unique

I fell in love with my house the moment I walked in. Simply because it felt European.
It was the only house I looked at that came close to the aesthetic I loved in Paris and Milan and even though at that time, it looked dreadful, I could see it's amazing potential.
My favorite decor magazine was always the French Marie Claire Maison, with its eclectic and unusual style. I collected each issue in Europe and longed to one day have a house that I could pour my love into while painting the floors white.
It has gone through many incarnations but just recently I replaced every window, added insulation and redid the bathroom.
I also redid the kitchen, designing it myself in my typical non traditional way. Open, rustic and very minimal.
I'm an artist through and through and I appreciate the beauty of imperfection.
My house is not perfect - it's 180 years old and it is totally charming.
It is full of artwork and much of my furniture is from ABC Carpet and Home in NYC and Restoration Hardware. Although I'm just as crazy about great thrift and antique stores.
There's a bit of everything in my house.
