Located in the heart of the Alpilles, Saint Rémy is one of the must of Provence. Its verdant valleys and subtly perfumed, its beautiful houses tastefully restored and its charming old streets have made its success ...
While strolling quietly in its narrow and winding streets, you will come across beautiful old fountains, small shady squares welcoming pleasant restaurant terraces and elegant boutiques.
From the Place Jean Jaurès at the gates of the old town, you will follow a long succession of mansions (often converted into a museum or art gallery), convents, chapels, and sumptuous residences of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The beauty of its landscapes and the quality of its light have inspired many artists, writers and painters.
The most famous is undeniably Vincent Van Gogh who painted more than 150 paintings in the countryside surrounding Saint Remy de Provence
A walk on the places painted by the artist will allow you to discover the mountain of St Rémy, fields of wheat and poppies, olive trees and cypresses which remain imperturbable more than a century later.
Saint Rémy de Provence, a city of history, is built on one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe. The remains of the Comptoir de Glanum founded in the 3rd century BC, then remodeled by the Romans under Julius Caesar. They are an impressive testimony of the civilizations that have followed one another here. You can visit the large thermal baths, the long residential avenue, the temple and the natural source of a true Gallo-Roman city dating from 30 to 10 years BC. Two important monuments are visible near the site: the Arc de Triomphe and the Mausoleum of the Antiques.
