About this property

Sri LankanTropical Retreat Guava House

The house comes with all the luxuries, hot water showers, huge comfortable 4 poster beds, freshly laundered towels.

We would ADVISE YOU TO ARRIVE IN DAYLIGHT HOURS, BEFORE 6PM as the house is difficult to find in the dark and if you are not familiar with the surroundings and the house, it can be a little daunting to arrive at night, especially if you are coming directly from the airport.

Guava House is our home, it is not a hotel, and the beauty of the place is the peace and being in true nature. Along with this, small bugs, spiders and sometimes a small field mouse like to share the space; we do our best to keep ants etc. at bay. We are reliant on the sometimes, erratic electricity supplied by the local electricity board; we do experience power cuts, which usually last for a few hours. The thatch roof of the house is made from a local grass reed called “iluk”, we do our best to keep this maintained however sometimes we do experience a few small leaks in the roof. Jeyanthi and Sudharma will be at hand to help with any unwanted visitors or leaks. We provide Wi Fi however this is not unlimited and only for email, WhatsApp etc. not for downloading large files or movies. If any of these points would worry you, perhaps Guava House is not the place for you.

The pool is an architectural reflective plunge pool. It is about 5 foot deep (small children cannot stand in it) and does not have steps, so can be a little difficult to get out of the for the less able.

The whole retreat can accommodate 5 comfortably. There are 3 bedrooms in the main house, 2 double bedrooms and one single bedroom, all with attached bathrooms. An open mezzanine area can be used for an extra guest to sleep, so we can accommodate 6 or 7 guests.

HOW IT WORKS
Guava House, has 3 bedrooms. Rates vary depending on how many rooms will be used. It is always let out on exclusive use, full villa basis. Sleeps 5 comfortably.

1 room occupied US $300/night
2 rooms occupied US $425/night
3 rooms occupied US $550/night
Extra guest charge for sleeping on the mezzinine

For the more active there are 4 mountain bikes on which you can explore the village area, or simply stroll through the paddy fields and along the river or climb up through a wooded glen for more spectacular views. Bible rock is around 5kms away and a challenge to climb for the more adventurous.

Staff
During your stay you will be looked after by Jeyanthi and Sudharma who live in a small house next to Guava House, they will be there to do all the cleaning and washing-up daily. Either buy and cook your own food in a modern well-equipped kitchen, with stunning views or ask Jeyanthi to prepare Sri Lankan rice and curry.

The Neighborhood
Guava house is located on the borders of the Sri Lankan hill country. It’s within easy reach of the famous elephant orphanage (about one hours drive), and close to the ancient capital Kandy (one and half hour drive). Day trips to a 'up country' tea estate can be arranged.

Getting around
We can arrange a known driver to meet you at the airport and drive you to Guava House (not included in the price). During your stay your driver can sleep in a separate cottage on the estate. He will be available to take you on day trips to the surrounding area. Alternatively a van and driver or 3 wheeler from the local area can also be arranged when needed for trips to the nearest town Mawanella for food supplies or other day trips.

Other Things to Note
Guava House is family home which has been designed and built by the owner architect, to blend in and compliment the surrounding nature outside, the roof is thatched in “iluk” (a Sri Lankan reed) and the floors and walls are mango wood and teak.

Guava House is situated on top of a hill surrounded by rubber trees, paddy fields and mountains. The beauty of the place is the secluded and remote location, however along with this comes with the occasional area power cuts which usually last for a couple of hours. We have plenty of torches to hand and gas hobs and oven to cook on. Unfortunately we do not have a generator, so the fans will not operate while the power is off.

Sometimes fully packed vans have difficulty going up the hill all the way to the house, (especially if has been raining) however they can park at the bottom of the hill and you can walk up to the house, our staff will be on hand to bring all the luggage up.

We have a Wi Fi connection, however it is not unlimited. It is sufficient for sending emails and limited internet use. The Wi Fi connection throughout the country can be intermittent.

The pool is an architectural reflective plunge pool. It is about 5 foot deep (small children cannot stand in it) and does not have steps, so can be a little difficult to get out of the for the less able or elderly.

In this tropical rural area there are an array of wild insects, including mosquitoes, butterflies, beetles etc. Remember to bring mosquito repellent. However we provide mosquito nets on all the beds.

During rainy periods, it is likely that you will encounter leeches in the land around the house and chalets. They are harmless, but if bitten by one you may feel a slight itch for a few days. In the house we have a list of tips for avoiding them!
Pinnawalla Elephant Orphanage is about 45 minutes drive and Kandy the ancient capital city

Please handle the bi-folding glass doors with care as they are fragile and there is certain technique to opening and closing them (Ask Jeyanthi for assistance)

This house is not suitable for very young children for various reasons (If you would like further information about this, contact Shaunagh.)

Amazing property
We loved our stay at the Guava House. The property is breathtaking and the hosts and their housekeepers were very attentive. The food was simply amazing, some of the best we had during our stay. In Sri Lanka The property is truly isolated and therefore quite remote. If this is what you are after then this property can't be beaten. My daughters also loved the house's friendly dog, Molly. Thank you Guava House the memories will stray with us for ever.

About the host

Hosted by Shaunagh

Host profile image
I grew up in England, lived the early part of my married life in London and in 1999 my husband and I moved to Sri Lanka with our two children. We have lived in Sri Lanka since then and my architect husband built our dream house in 2008. I am a yoga teacher and welcome any yogis and other nature lovers to our home.

Why they chose this property

When we first saw our plot the land we were taken at how very magical and holistic the area was, with sleeping rubber trees, 360 degree views of surrounding mountainous range, with Bible Rock protecting it at a distance.
My husband dreamed of creating a special retreat for our family and friends, to be more in tune with nature and all it’s surroundings. A place to escape to, from all of the busy pressures of city life.
In 2005 we bought the land and by Dec 2008 the house was complete.

What makes this property unique

The sense of staying at Guava House is that of simple ‘open-plan’ living and kitchen area, open to the breezes and extensive views that the terrace and infinity pool have to offer. It is a thoroughly peaceful environment in which to chill, relax and regain a perspective on what is important in life. It’s a truly wonderful place to just do nothing and spend time talking, discussing and contemplating. Two, separate thatched chalets, built into the side of the sloping terrain add an extra dimension of privacy and peaceful relaxation and can accommodate a further four guests in addition to the three bedrooms in the main house. An open-plan first floor area can be used for a variety of communal uses including additional sleeping area, yoga, exercise classes and games area.
