The Old Fort
The property is a fully restored plantation house, once a fully working sugar plantation dating back to the Middle Ages. The villa was constructed with cobblestones and wood beams in the classic French-Mediterranean mansion-house style. The large renovated buildings have been completely rebuilt, using the same stone once part of the original property & forming the centre of an incredible 28-acre estate.

Eco Villa
This eco villa boasts an open-air design, embracing its natural surroundings and eliminating its carbon footprint with the use of solar panels. Opting for natural ventilation and avoiding traditional air conditioning is a true model for sustainable living, ensuring that every stay is as environmentally responsible as it is comfortable. Location
The location is an oasis of tranquillity, yet it is less than a 10-minute drive to reach the main town of Port Elizabeth, the bars & restaurants of the Belmont Walkway and the calm waters lapping onto the white sands of Princess Margaret & Lower Bay. In addition, the two neighbouring beaches, Ravine Bay and Hope Bay are only a short hike away from the property.

Inside
Within the main building lies a large banquet-style kitchen with a magnificent dining room area that turns into a magical setting at night. It includes a lounge with a fireplace and large screen TV with a soundbar. Enjoy a home-style BBQ using the charcoal grill while surrounded by the estate's stunning views and lush surroundings. Fibre optic cable ensures that the wifi is quick and reliable, making it easy for guests to stream their favourite shows, work remotely, or stay connected with friends and family.

Sleeping
There are five uniquely styled suites that comfortably accommodate 12 guests. The two-bedroom primary suite is located on the second floor of the Plantation House building. This spacious suite features a large bedroom with a king-sized four-poster bed and a second bedroom with a queen bed), a custom-designed bathroom with a pebbled bathtub, and a sitting room with a library. The suite boasts beautiful hardwood floors, high arched hardwood ceilings with ceiling fans, and two balconies with stunning views of the estate and the surrounding islands.

A second suite is located at the top of the main tower and offers breathtaking 360-degree views through its abundance of windows. This king-sized four-poster bed suite also has a sofa, an en-suite bathroom with an open pebbled shower, and a ceiling fan to keep the room cool. Wake up with all the Grenadine Islands in view.

The third suite is located in the central tower and offers a romantic atmosphere with its ancient stone walls. This suite features a large four-poster king-sized bed, a sitting area, and an en-suite pebbled shower bathroom that can be accessed from a private balcony.

A fourth suite is located on the ground floor of the main tower and features hardwood floors throughout. It includes a sitting area, a king-sized four-poster bed, and an en-suite pebbled shower bathroom.

A fifth suite is located in a separate building above the outdoor bar and pool area. It features a queen-sized bed with an en-suite bathroom and a private balcony with views of the Grenadine Islands, including Grenada, on a clear day.

We are very flexible; let us know your requirements, and we will happily accommodate you. For example, if you have children or require additional beds, we would happily do so.

A Truly Unique Experience

From the time we got off the ferry in Bequia our holiday was perfect. We were met by Otmar who was the creator of this wonderful place and who has now passed the torch on to his son Quirin. Between the two of them they have provided an oasis of charm and privacy that is unsurpassed on the island. The Old Fort looks down over the sea with views of Mustique and other islands on the horizon. A gentle breeze cools the air and the grounds are alive with lush vegetation, fruit trees and flowers. The stone work is magnificent, reminiscent of times gone by with graceful archways leading you from room to room. The bedrooms are well appointed, airy and fresh allowing a peaceful relaxing sleep. Depending upon your needs you can have a chef provide your meals or as in our case prepare your own food making use of the kitchen. This seems like a perfect arrangement for larger groups and a great place for a wedding or family time. The dining area is under a sheltered roof but open to the outdoors where you can sit at the end of the day taking in the view and enjoying the gentle night. The sitting room just off the kitchen is very comfortable and everywhere you look there are things of interest from pottery, various antiquites and some quite amazing stone rubbings of ancient Carib artwork. A fairly recent addition is the swimming pool where we spent quite a lot of time. A great design by Quirin! The Old Fort is just a short drive from the town and a variety of beaches so it is easy to take advantage of all that is offered . All in all I can't think of a better location to explore the island from. If you are looking for a peaceful, private place with warm, friendly hosts and a uniquely beautiful atmosphere you will not be disappointed.

What a Gem!

The old fort is a place like no other I've ever been to. The setting is atop a hill with almost 360 views of the ocean from the tower room where we stayed. The breezes were delightful and I even had to ask for a blanket. Other rooms have air conditioning if you want, but we liked the rustic top floor. Quirin and Otmar were perfect hosts, regaling us with stories of life on Bequia, archeology, philosophy, and the vision and hard work that went into turning a ruin into a paradise. The staff was attentive and friendly and kept the rooms immaculate. Sarah and Josiah served fresh delicious meals. We went to other restaurants in Bequia, but were always drawn to come back to the Old Fort to taste what they had that day. I enjoyed a number of short hikes; one around the mountain top, another to Port Elizabeth, and another to Rocky Cove and a cactus garden led by Brownie the dog. As an example of the care the proprietors gave us, Quirin woke up before dawn to take us to a sailing charter he had arranged for us. We will be back often with friends and family.

Providing an amazing Caribbean hideaway

Our 8 night stay at the Old Fort was just perfect. The property is truly one of a kind with historic buildings, a beautiful pool, breathtaking views, and even a pair of friendly resident donkeys. We were able to fully relax and take in all that Bequia has to offer stressed out people in need of a vacation! Can't wait for the next trip! The Schaedle family have loving restored a fort on Bequia that gives you shelter from reality. We stayed a week to escape the hustle and bustle of the grind of life in the US and were richly rewarded for our choice. The staff at the Old Fort exceeded our expectations and the accommodations were first rate and a true experience not a cookie cutter hotel.

I grew up on Bequia and as a little child helped my parents rebuild the old ruins which were once a part of the ancient plantation hundreds of years ago. When I was seventeen I left the island to live in Europe where I worked for various renowned hotels such as the Amsterdam Hilton and the Kempinski Four Seasons. I also took the time whilst in Europe to complete my degree which I did in International Hospitality Management and International Marketing Management at London Metropolitan University. Why they chose this property

The Old Fort is the only fully restored plantation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and one of only a select few in the world. Unfortunately most of them are now derelict and have been abandoned. The property's history together with the way it is laid out majestically, set on what is arguably the grandest estate on the island makes it very special. The acreage which stretches down several hillsides to the Atlantic Ocean beneath. The fact that Christmas Eve 2018 marked my parents 40th year of arriving on the island gives us a knowledge of the area which is unparalleled. This translates into a superior type of service which we can offer due to the many connections we have made over the years. There are numerous other reasons why you should stay at this property, such as the majestic views which are arguably the best on the island, the various spacious bedrooms and areas around the property. The way the property has been rebuilt in unique fashion, the various additional services such as the option of chartering our own 40 foot powerboat; not to forget of course the fact that Bequia is one of the most beautiful unspoiled islands to be at in the entire Caribbean.

There are numerous benefits such as the undisturbed environment giving you extreme harmony with nature. The very beautiful views overlooking the estate grounds and ocean with its various hikes and two unspoiled beaches which are only a short distance away. The large openly laid out property with its majestic suites set in various areas of the property making it very private even if one is there with friends and family. The fact we are so adaptable to any of our guest's requirements. The majestic gardens containing various species of palms and flowers. The history of the building and various surrounding areas of which a group of archaeologists have again excavated an entire new section within the estate's grounds. The fact that Bequia is such a great island to visit! What about the option of excursions and boat trips to other islands, sailing anyone, eco tours, hiking & fishing, the benefits you would get really go on and on. But most importantly guests get to feel the true local vibe of the island and become a part of history when staying with us.
