The walls are 12 inches thick, so you won't hear a peep from the outside world. It's like having your own private castle, but with better weather! The custom-made desk made from a walnut slab is perfect for any work you need to do during your stay, but let's be real, you're on vacation, so work can wait! The room has an open, light, and grand feel to it. The master bedroom on this level has a king-size bed and a couch that opens into a queen bed, making it the perfect place to kick back and relax. The bathroom ensuite in the master has a soaker tub, his and her sinks, and a large walk-in shower with a multi-soaker shower.
On the second level, you'll find the great room and kitchen, which extends into the great room, where you'll find a massive island that's perfect for watching the chefs cook the fresh catch of the day. With over 20 seating spots, you can have your own private feast or host a party! There's also a covered balcony where you can BBQ and enjoy the views of the forest.
If you're feeling creative, head down to the art room and paint some rocks or make a shell board. If you're feeling a little less creative, head over to the bunk room, where you can catch up on your favorite shows or movies on the 55-inch TV. The room has two bunk beds (full on the bottom and twin on the top) and a sliding door that leads you to the backyard.

Top things to do in Shelter Cove with some silly humor :)
Visit the redwoods, and make sure to drive through the tree – it's like a car wash for your vehicle, but with trees instead of suds.
Black Sand Beach – perfect for romantic walks, but don't even think about taking a dip unless you want to be a human popsicle.
Shelter Cove Beach – drive on the beach like a boss, just make sure to check the tide chart first or you might end up sinking like the Titanic.
Malcolm Park – come for the lighthouse, stay for the seals, and have the chance to snatch some abalone shells without making any marine life enemies.
Golf – tee off with some old clubs that probably date back to the Jurassic era, but don't worry, they still work (kind of).
Biking – ride your mountain bike through Paradise Park and embrace your inner daredevil by tackling some obstacles (just make sure your health insurance is up-to-date).
ATV – for those who like to live dangerously, ride your ATV on the beach like you're auditioning for the next Fast and Furious movie (cue epic music).
Fishing – catch a fish, or two, or ten, but beware of sharks – they like to photobomb your fishing pictures.
Whale Watching – watch whales migrate and be amazed by their majestic spouts, just don't get too close or they might flip your boat like a pancake.
Watch the planes land – experience the thrill of watching private planes land without a tower or monitoring system, and cross your fingers that none of them miss the runway.
Gyppos – enjoy some brews and live music while playing cornhole and watching planes take off and land, but beware of the occasional wayward golf ball or plane.
Fish Bowl – fuel up with coffee and salmon bagels before venturing out to sea, and don't forget to chat with Autumn, the local expert on all things Shelter Cove.
Delgato Pizza – order some pizza for takeout or dine outside while admiring the beautiful surroundings, just don't let the seagulls steal your food.
Sky's – indulge in some mouth-watering Thai food while taking in the breathtaking views, and bring your own booze to save some dough. I think this one closed after COVID. Darn!
Mi Mochimo – try some unique and delicious Venezuelan dishes on the deck while enjoying the sea breeze, and don't be surprised if you start speaking Spanish by the end of your meal.

The place was beautiful and very accommodating! My family has been going to Shelter Cove for vacation for over 20 years and we loved our stay. Price point is high but definitely worth it!
We had a wonderful time here. The proximity to the black sand beaches, tide pools, and redwoods made this an ideal location for us. The accommodations were perfect for our needs, plenty of room, nice furnishings, and an attentive host.
We love Shelter Cove and found the house to be perfect for our family group of 10 adults. The host was very helpful with any questions or concerns we had. It’s nestled up in the quiet woodsy part of Shelter Cove
Had a great time with the family. Perfect house to play board games, cook family meals, and host a Murder Mystery Dinner party. Shelter cove was a perfect quaint beach town to relax and enjoy the coast line, with many wonderful hikes near buy. The Host were wonderful to work with and the house was perfectly stocked with all the essentials. would highly recommend staying in this beautiful house.
Katie was amazing! My husband asked for blueprints and Katie didn’t hesitate to provide them quickly. The beds were comfy. The kitchen is a perfect layout and complete with everything you need! What a wonderful place to relax and enjoy Shelter Cove area!
House fit our needs perfectly. Owner is very helpful and there are clear directions for everything. Lots of games and gadgets to play with! There are a lot of stairs inside the house, so mobility impaired folks might struggle a bit. Shelter Cove is fun.

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness, listing accuracy
We had high hopes for this property, but it fell short — especially given its "luxury" marketing. The hot tub was a major letdown. We arrived to it half-full with debris, required us to fill it and add chemicals daily due to a leak, and left one guest with a rash. When we contacted the host, they suggested we troubleshoot it ourselves — not acceptable for a safety issue at a property marketed as luxury.Cleanliness was lacking throughout. Bathrooms had spiders, insects, and ant trails. Outdoor furniture was covered in debris and looked nothing like the listing photos. Several safety concerns also stood out: a rotten patio railing, a rusty spiral staircase, and dangerously dull kitchen knives. The "luxury" label simply doesn't fit. The home has a rustic, DIY feel — converted garage game room with a duct-taped couch, non-functional TV and fireplace remotes, no tissues, and not enough trash bags. That said, there were bright spots: streaming services were signed in and ready to go, the bulk paper towels and toilet paper in the butler's pantry were appreciated for our large group, and the Big Green Egg grill was a genuine highlight. We tried to make the best of it, but the hot tub issues, cleanliness, and safety concerns made it hard to fully relax. We hope the owner addresses these before the next guests arrive and reconsiders the "luxury" designation.
This was the best experience we have ever had with a VRBO home. The home is beautiful and exactly as described and pictured. Jon is an exceptional host who went above and beyond to assist us with our stay. This was a family vacation for 5 adults, 2 small children and our dog. The home was more than set up for our needs. We enjoyed Black Sand Beach, which is only a short walk from the house, as well as several other beaches that were a short drive away. Our 3 year old grandson was entranced by the seals who hung out on the rocks and danced in the waves. We cooked most of our meals in the wonderful kitchen but also enjoyed several of the restaurants in Shelter Cove (shout out to Gyppo Ale Mill).Special thanks to Jon and Jacque who helped us out when our car unexpectedly had a dead battery. They were able to help us quickly and make what could have been a very unpleasant situation into a small bump in the road. We highly recommend this home for anyone wanting to explore the beautiful Lost Coast area.
Our group of three couples had plenty of room to spread out, but we really enjoyed the kitchen / family room area to dine and hang out watching TV or playing games in the evening! The floor palm was very open and unique! The area was in a quiet neighborhood and we were able to walk to the nearby Black Sand Beach! We also traveled up through the Avenue of the Redwood Giants and walked several trails in the State Parks that are in the vicinity! The Redwoods are a sight to behold! If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this a great area to visit!
Our family rented Black Sands at Shelter Cove (property ID 1846899), looking to do something different for the Christmas holiday. We had five adults, four kids from 11 to 16, so we need something roomy and comfortable. The Black Sands house fit the bill perfectly. The kitchen came well equipped with everything we needed. The kids made good use of the ping pong table and video equipment in the game room. The sofas (family and game room) were very comfortable. There was a roomy fenced in area off the bottom floor, a real plus for pets. The house's heating was in the floor, which I was a bit skeptical about, but worked very well; and there were nest thermostats throughout the house for different areas. There were lots of entertainment options – TVs in each bedroom, the family room, and the game room, and an excellent stock of DVD-blu ray movies. The hot tub got use too, especially by the kids. The house is close to Black Sands beach and overlook, a fun place to wander around and a great place to watch a sunset. We also had a great time exploring the tidepools and the beach at Mal Coombs park. The hosts, Jon and Katie were very helpful and responsive. We communicated via text and e-mail, and they replied quickly. We did run into a toilet problem in one of the three bathrooms and they had someone out to fix it the day after Christmas, which we appreciated. All in all, the Black Sands house helped make our travel Christmas experience an enjoyable one.
This house was perfect for our vacation! The beds were so comfortable, there’s space for everyone to gather in the kitchen area but also enough privacy. The host responded quickly to any questions.
My husband, 3 adult sons and I were there to see the Redwood trees - wow!! - can’t even describe how beautiful they are.
The house is also so close to black sands beach which is breathtaking.
The general store had everything we needed for our stay and we also visited the local brewery which was great.
It’s very difficult for us to align our schedules to take a trip so it has to be special-this is!!
We all agreed this was absolutely one of our best vacations.
You will not be disappointed!
Our families had a great time. The kitchen area and open seating was great for kids and adults. The backyard with vegetation was so nice for sitting in the hot tub and playing corn hole. While the walk up from the beach was good exercise, Black Sands was wonderfu. Shelter Cove is a nice find.
We had 11 family members for a week! Everyone slept comfortably in the many bedrooms. The kitchen was big enough to accommodate several “cooks” at a time. With multiple floors, nooks and outside areas, there were plenty of places to gather and places for personal time. This house offers comfort and ease.
12 of us Stayed here after completing the Lost Coast Trail. The house was roomy enough for all 3 families to enjoy Thanksgiving and a few days of rest and relaxation. The game room was great except only 1 dart worked. The hot tub was nice but reheating after draining took over 12 hours not the 4 hours mentioned in the video so plan accordingly if draining. Would stay here again if ever in Shelter Cove.
We had an amazing time at Shelter Cove. The location provided a peaceful base to travel to the Redwoods or easily walk to the black sandy beaches to watch the pelicans and seals play. The house is gorgeous and we all had room for ourselves and room to all be comfortable in the great room. We'd happily be back.
Beautiful property moments away from black sand beach
We had an amazing time here. All three couples had their own floor. There were tons of options for entertainment - hot tub, TVs, great kitchen, game room. All bathrooms came with modern temp controlled shower heads. In vicinity of good hiking and a mountain bike park. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a beautiful, serene getaway tangential to the woods.
The house is spacious and full of nice amenities. The location is quiet and close to Black Sands Beach. Hosts Jon and Katie were wonderful and very responsive. If you plan to visit Shelter Cove with your family and/or friends, this property is a wonderful home base for your explorations of the Lost Coast. Plus, it's pet friendly if you plan to bring your furry buddy. We recommend it!
This house was perfect for our family and 3 grandchildren. So much for all to do ping pong , corn hole , we cooked and enjoyed all our meals in the well appointed kitchen and great room. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.
We had a great time at Shelter Cove. The house is spacious and well equipped for a group getaway. The beautiful beach is just a short walk down the hill and the neighborhood is quiet and remote. We will return!
The House was Amazing and it was really clean and really close to the Cove ant the Black Sands , As well as the Tide Pools there was plenty of room for all our family that came up for the week . We will be back for sure ...
Wonderful property in a great location! Everything about the property and about Shelter Cove was perfect for our family. The house was very comfortable and had everything that we needed, and provided a great place to relax between excursions exploring the local beaches, redwoods, and rivers. The surrounding area exceeded all expectations. We hope to come back after the pandemic when we can take advantage of the local bars and restaurants.

About the host
Hosted by Katie Flakoll
We live in the Bay Area and love to spend time in Shelter Cove every chance we get.
Why they chose this property
Shelter Cove is one of our most favorite places in the world! We were so excited to purchase BlackSands in December of 2019. The prior owner started the project in 2007 and had the vision to create a truly unique space. The lot was chosen to build because it faces the south, which provides sunlight for most of the day. The house is built using Insulated Concrete Forms, which are foam blocks that stack up to form walls, then concrete is poured in. The walls are over 12 inches thick, which provides amazing insulation. Also, the floors are stamped concrete with over a mile of pex tubing inside them. This is connected to an elaborate boiler system in the mechanical room. There are 4 zones in the house, each controlled with a nest thermostat. The feeling of warm floors under your feet is really nice after a day on the beach!
The house is one of the largest in the area with 4 levels but it was designed with an open concept. We could have extended the second floor for more square footage but wanted the great room to have high ceilings, which are 25 feet at the peak. You can sit on the couch and look out the floor to ceiling windows at the massive fir trees and mountains just outside. We wanted to fill this space with a really nice sound system and TV to watch movies and sports. There are 7 speakers built into the walls and subwoofer. It is really nice to enjoy immersive music in this room. The couches are power reclining and SUPER comfortable.
The kitchen is really incredible and we are so happy the way it turned out. The granite is imported and called White Princess and there is a lot of it. The island connects the great room and kitchen and is a favorite spot to each dinner or watch the Chefs cook up the days catch.
The hot tub is a real treat after a day at the beach. We put it just under the covered patio on the first level. So relaxing to look up at the trees and stars at night.
What makes this property unique
