About this property

Deep Water Oceanfront - Schoodic Surf Cottage

Lobster buoys dot the ocean and seals pop their heads out of the water. Some of the darkest night skies on the east coast offer incredible stargazing. Schoodic Surf Cottage is located in a private wooded setting on the pink-granite shore in the heart of Downeast Maine.

Relax on the shorefront and watch the waves crashing on the rocks, the seagulls flying, and the lobster men (and women) pulling their traps. Explore real Maine lobstering villages. Buy lobster off the dock and steam them in sea water in our outdoor cooker.

Just five miles from the village of Winter Harbor and the Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park. Drive around the park loop along the rocky shore, while enjoying views of the open ocean and the nearby islands. Take the ferry from Winter Harbor to Bar Harbor; enjoy the quaint village of Winter Harbor, art galleries, restaurants and even a golf course. There is also a grocery store, 5 & 10 general store, and gas station.

Enjoy the real Maine coast!

Fall Escape
This property was perfect for our fall escape. You can see amazing sunrises, breathtaking ocean views and unbelievable star filled skies on the property. We enjoyed being away from the more populated areas of Maine but close enough to explore Schoodic peninsula, Bar Harbor and Jasper Beach. This house has everything you could ask for if you want to prepare your own meals. I highly recommend purchasing fresh lobsters off the boat in Corea. Everything you need to steam/boil the lobsters is provided, including instructions. Best lobsters I ever had! We also had some great food and drinks at the Pickled Wrinkle and the Treehouse Grill, both a short ride away. I would definitely rent this house again when we come back to Maine.

Nature Always Rejuvenates
We had a glorious time. Wonderful location, amazing views full of wildlife, tranquility and access to great hiking. The house is clean, well maintained, stocked kitchen, fresh white towels/bedding and comfortable beds (no sagging mattresses). We saw eagles, loons, snow rabbits, seals, porcupine, porpoise, deer, frogs, spiders (not the scary kind), butterflies and a spruce grouse. The mosses are a floral category unto their own and so vibrant. We experience a white sun along with the numerous moonrises. We will be back.

Wonderful!
This was our first visit to Maine in general for myself, husband, sister and brother-in-law, all in our 60s. This was the perfect house to base our week visit to the Acadia area after having traveled up the coast from Boston. The beautiful rocky coast water view and the updated kitchen and baths were the selling points for us. We loved sitting on the back deck for morning coffee or afternoon cocktails. Such a quiet peaceful area. I much preferred this to staying right on Mt Desert. We drove over to hike some trails a couple days and the 1 hr drive was expected. Luckily the crowds seemed better after Labor Day weekend. We ferried over from Winter Harbor to spend the day at Bar Harbor one day and it was a really pleasant 45 min ferry to view the coast from the sea. Spent 2 days enjoying the quieter less visited Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia. The house is very clean and has all needed supplies, including paper goods, plastic baggies etc. I appreciated all the wonderful artwork on the walls! Would come back again for sure.

Here's a moral dilemma. Schoodic Surf Cottage is one of the, if not the, best VRBO's we have rented. (And we'ce stayed in many.) However, its booking schedule is so full that we had to reserve it two years ago to get our two August weeks this year. We are torn about making it look even more attractive and encouraging further competition for dates. However, the truth should be told. We have been vacationing in Maine occasionally for almost thirty years. We kept wanting to find a place with rocky shoreline and crashing surf and never succeeded before. We finally found it here. (The waves are not always crashing but that's a nit to pick.) In addition to the gorgeous view from the deck and the living room, SSC comes with its own dependable wildlife: harbor porpoises, snowshoe hares, sea otters, hummingbirds, a young buck deer, and, the most amazing, a pair of bald eagles, one of which regularly perched at the top of the trees in plain sight of the deck. (We have watched it there for an hour or more at a time.) The house itself has very comfortable beds and great views from the two upstairs bedrooms (we watched gorgeous sunrises and the super blue moon from our bed). The kitchen is the best equipped of any VRBO we have ever stayed in. There's even a coffee grinder! (The knives are sharp and cut things. If you don't understand the importance of that, you've not stayed in enough VRBO's.) In short, this is a phenomenal place. Please do not book it! :-)
