About this property

Elderberry Eden - Nehalem Riverfront House

River House! Right on the banks of the Nehalem with creeks on both sides. Our location is just a mile off of Hwy 26 and 22 miles from the coast (Canon Beach and Seaside), but we have nicer weather here with swimming and fishing right on the property. Our location is close to neighbors and a small grocery, but once in the house you will be facing the river for fishing and swimming. There is a little cottage that we live in off and on, so you might see my wife and I puttering around.

The space
There are a couple of options for outdoor barbecues and lots of outdoor seating on the deck by the house and on the patio down by the river. Indoors we have two full-size living rooms in addition to the 3 bedrooms. The kitchen is large with a dining table that seats 8.

COVID INFO: We are taking extra precautions in order to increase all of our health safety. There is now always a buffer of one day between guests, and we are now finalizing our cleaning process with a complete sanitization procedure. We considered raising the cleaning fee, but decided instead to make a compromise and ask our guests to please do a few things on checkout day to help us all stay safe.

Guest access
You will have access to the entire house. If only two people are staying then we usually close the downstairs bedrooms, however the downstairs half-bath is still accessible. You will also have access to the great outdoors of course, but please watch your step as there are a lot of steep drop offs into the water!

Other things to note
The WiFi connection is not quite broadband. It utilizes a cel phone chip and does OK, but not really up to the task of streaming movies, etc. Can be especially slow on weekends. Cellular phone service is pretty decent for Cricket, AT&T and Verizon. Sprint and T-Mobile do not work well here.

There is a general store just a mile from here that manages to stock a little of everything and has better cel reception. They also have a gas station, restaurant, lounge and inn. The Elderberry Inn is great if you have additional guests. Camp 18 is another good option for food just 4 miles west.

Getting down to the river is a matter of walking down about 25 steps that feature a good sturdy handrail. There is a railing down there with another gate to access the river. Other areas of the property are fairly wild and can present risks for unattended children. There are some steep drop offs that are sometimes hidden by the brush, so please keep this in mind when exploring.

The home is a little dated, but the descriptions are accurate and location is stunning on the river. There are so many spots on the property to enjoy the view and relaxing surroundings, including the nearby stream. Access to the property is very easy and the hosts were very responsive and helpful. We had a little issue with the refrigerator starting to go out while we were there, but they had a quick fix in less than a day and it ended up being a non-issue. I would highly recommend the property for a relaxing getaway.

Beautiful Property

We found just what we needed in this beautiful home. The location is serene, with the river running by. We enjoyed exploring some of the interesting items in the house and even played the “Therapy” game. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed and more. Would definitely stay here again.

Could use a deep clean and some safety improvements.Spiders in most corners and rooms, spiderwebs and cobwebs on furniture, extra blankets were crusty with gum or candy stuck to them. Felt half like someone lived there but hadn't been there in a while. Steep slippery steps and no railing to get to the river, and the "cottage" deck on the property is in a state of disrepair. No railing spindles or truss beam supports below it (after talking with the host he seemed shocked I thought it was part of the rental - but there is nothing saying its not and it's midway toward the lower part of the property, it would be a nice relaxing river view if it was renovated - but It appears that the owners stay there when there are guests, (though we must have missed that in the description or it was added after we talked). This threw us off. It seemed abandoned but one window standing wide open and we worried that we were going to stumble across a random visitor staying there. So we chose to leave. The listing says fishing and swimming access, but there is no direct access to the river, it isn't inviting or easy to get to or maintained. The description says there is a railing, but actually there's a dangling rope attached to a wall that you're supposed to hold onto. Once you reach the lower part of the property there's still a significant drop to get to the water and even dangling your feet in would be a challenge.

Thank you for your review, but I need to address several points for future guests. The "cottage" deck: The cottage is my personal residence, not part of the rental. It is not included in the booking or listing, and is separated by a closed gate. The listing states: "There is a little cottage that we live in off and on. Apparently you did not read this and assumed you could open the gate and enter a private area, and then complain about the safety of a deck that was under construction and that you were not authorized to access. River access: The listing explicitly states: "please watch your step as there are a lot of steep drop offs into the water!" The river access is a steep, natural riverfront slope. "Fishing and swimming access" means the river is reachable from the property — not that there is a paved path or swimming beach. There is a closed gate to the river. Would you prefer that I lock that gate so that no humans can get close to the water? Cleanliness: We clean thoroughly between stays. This is a riverfront property — spiders are a fact of life. I apologize for any we missed. We clean our blankets regularly. Sorry for your experience. Final note: You called me the morning of your early departure and expressed your feedback which I thanked you for. You told me you were satisfied and would not leave a review, but instead you left a negative review as well as a formal complaint to VRBO about the safety of areas you did not have access to. Really appreciate that.

Nice, quirky little house

Kind of a quirky little place in decoration and floor plan, but it’s really nice being close to the highway but far enough that you don’t hear it and you feel like you’re way out. It’s also pleasant having the forested river area right there. You can hear the little creek that runs beside the house if you enjoy that. House was clean and everything that was needed was there. Lots of movies and games. We were mainly there for sleeping, and beds were good. Biggest issue for us was only one shower, but we made it work. Owner is very helpful and communicates clearly and promptly. Thanks for the stay!
