Welcome to our quiet retreat, a warm 3 bedroom house with large open plan living area nestled into the bush. It is a short walk to the waterfront, the playground and the main entrance to the Pounawea Bush.
Nearby golf course, and horse trekking. Fishing is one of our pastimes in the Ōwaka River. There is a great walk along Surat Bay to False Island and Cannibal Bay, with a chance of seeing sea lions along the way.
Ōwaka, 5 minutes away by car, has a small supermarket open seven days until 7pm. There is a very good museum in Ōwaka that is also the tourist information centre.
Pounawea is a great base for exploring the Catlins.

Great host with thoughtful and helpful communications. Felt very at home spacious, comfortable, good books for rainy days (and good fire!) and well placed for plenty of local adventures.
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday here. What a fabulous place to stay! Comfortable beds, quiet and peaceful, and everything you could possibly need. Thank you
After a different accommodation booking we had in the Catlins was cancelled at the last minute, we were very grateful to find and book, "Pounawea Peaceful Haven." We had a fabulous time exploring the area from such a convenient spot. Everyone was very happy and we loved the fireplace!
Lovely house, very relaxing with everything we needed. They dont supply bed linen but i didnt realise this but they very kindly made sure we had some.Would definately reommend
Great place to stay with family. Very clean with everything you need. My youngest enjoyed playing charades with the family in front of the fire.
Highly recommend!
Really peaceful with only sound of birds to keep us entertained. Backed into a native bush everything was walking distance. Locked myself out once and was rescued by owner almost immediately by phone.
Had a lovely time.
If you are after 5 star hotel luxury you probably shouldn't be planning on going to the Catlins. If you want a 'get away from it all' break then book up immediately. Everything you need is here. Make the most of the deserted beaches, the rainforest walks, abundant wildlife and the feeling that you've just stepped back in time.
We had a lovely few days using this as our base to explore the area. The house was comfortable and well equipped. The washing machine as mentioned is problematic. We ended up hand washing and just using the spinner. The owner was very responsive to our questions. Would recommend.
We were meant to stay at John’s place but there was a plumbing issue, which I’m sure is resolved by now. John made exquisite alternate arrangements for us. While I can’t comment on their listing per se, I can comment on their integrity. We were well taken care of considering the circumstances. A pleasure meeting John and his wife.
Apologize for not doing the laundry before leaving. Having issues with the washing machine. Only complaint would be it's difficult to operate. Place otherwise was perfect. Lovely location. Clean. Would recommend and stay in this Bach again. Easy with baby whos 4 months old too.

Thanks for that review Jocelyn. The washing machine is desperate for a higher pressure water supply, all its problems stem from the low pressure. No worries about the laundry left undone, hope you'll come again.
This is my second time staying at Pounawea Haven, and I enjoyed it as much as the first time! A warm and comfortable house with all the facilities needed. A perfect place to explore the Catlins from or just spend some time hanging out. Looking forward to my return visit in the future!
A comfortable spot to stay and use as your base to explore the Catlins for a few days. Great communication with John and Sue too. Thanks for the memories!
