About this property

Harakeke - Award Winning, Beachfront Holiday Home

We love sharing our beach home with guests. Located on the beachfront with direct beach access in northern Waikanae Beach, Harakeke looks over the Waimea Stream Estuary to Kapiti Island.

We have been a top 10 finalist in the Bookabach/VRBO NZ awards twice, and ranked the top stay in NZ in 2024 (see https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/350220772/2024-bach-year-list-here).

Harakeke is a multi-award winning (NZ Institute of Architects, Master Builders in 2015) modern kiwi bach designed by Geoff Fletcher and built by Haarlem Build to replace our previous bach “Spinifex". Harakeke was awarded #1 holiday home for Bookabach/VRBO.com for 2024, previously a silver award winner in 2016. Harakeke was also featured by Stuff as one of the top 10 holiday homes for 2015 (Dec 15, New Zealand’s best holiday homes provide plenty of wow factor").

Relaxed, carefree indoor/outdoor living is a reality with a private sheltered patio straight off the living room. Harakeke has all the benefits of unobstructed beach front views, and is sunny and very sheltered.

If you can drag yourself away from the view, Harakeke is within easy (5 min) walking distance of restaurants and cafes, a source of provisions and fine wines, golf course, tennis court and interesting parks and reserves. Harakeke has, in-core floor heating, gas water and cooking, and a wood burner for warmth and ambience for those colder winter nights.

Special conditions:
Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to clean the house and do the dishes before you leave.

No parties. Also, if you are intending having more folk around than stated on the booking form (e.g. for dinner/lunch) please discuss in advance.

Dogs are OK, but only in the lounge/kitchen area please (ie. not in the bedrooms). No cats please.

Normal check out is 10am, check in 2pm (unless by prior arrangement).

Modern House in Wonderful Location

We were 3 couples visiting family in Waikanae beach over Xmas. The house is very comfortable, in a great location with views out to Kapiti and situated to make the most of the sunset. The outdoor areas are well-designed to be enjoyed no matter where the wind comes from. The one issue was finding the 3rd bathroom is an outdoor shower in a bath - very useful for cleaning off after a walk on the beach or a swim - but not so practical. The owners have indicated they will adjust the info accordingly. It was not a big deal for us just not what we expected. Warmly recommended.

Instructions for appliances

Great peace when you come from somewhere like Sydney. Some small maintenance issues need to addressed i.e. oiling the opening sliders (realise the salt makes this difficult but guests should not have to resort to using a blade knife to open). Would I come back and stay again? Definately

We had a wonderful stay at Peter and Michelle’s holiday home. The location was fantastic!

Would definitely rent the house again as it’s a wonderful home for a family getaway by the beach.

Fabulous holiday beach house!

This place is amazing! All the comforts of home in a gorgeous setting. Bed linen was so comfy and beds very comfortable. The weather wasn’t the best but the fireplace was excellent and kept us warm. There is no clothes dryer in the house however we were able to use the portable clothes rack to dry our clothes in front of the fire. Also the absence of a TV was a little disconcerting at first but we did get used to that. As the weather turned sour it would have been nice to catch up on some Netflix movies though. All in all we loved our weekend in this fabulous house!

Gorgeous place to stay. Well set up for visitors with excellent communication, easy check-in and (most importantly) a gorgeous place to stay with amazing views! This is our third time staying here and we will definitely be back again.

80th Break away

Fantastic location for all - our elderly parents loved the relaxing space & view. It was exactly as we hoped for by allowing them a chance to people watch & do as much or little, as they wanted. Close to great food, bakery & 10 minutes from shopping we would recommend it to anyone looking for a weekend away. Michelle made sure little extras were left & we are grateful to have the opportunity to bring our small dogs with us. They loved their break away as well.

Beach retreat

This modern accommodation was right on the beach. I appreciated the multiple decks and living quarters separated (main in main building and two bedrooms in attached out building. Overall, it offered all the amenities we needed to enjoy our stay. Easy access to Wellington by drive or train. If you like to be secluded with just a few options for dining out (though good), you will enjoy this lovely place. Grocery stores and other needs close by. Nea r by we had a great walk up Parata Trek and explored Nga Manu nature reserve. And of course walking the miles of beach right out the back door. Wish our plans had matched up with opportunity to visit Kapiti Island. Highly recommend this accommodation.

Amazing Bach

This is a lovely, open bach. It was very pleasant to stay there and had all the amenities. Beautiful location overlooking the beach and Kapiti Island. It was really nice to stay there.

Superb location for a getaway

We zipped away to Harakeke to enjoy some quality family time and it did not disappoint. Even though the weather didn’t play nice it was lovely to be so close to the beach and the views were wonderful. The kids loved their own section to sleep in (as did we!) and we loved that there was no TV… meant more games of Uno in the evening! We took a dog gate to keep our dog from following us upstairs so I’d recommend something similar if you have a dog that follows you everywhere. Superb communication from Michelle and Peter and we’re so pleased we got to experience Harakeke.

Midwinter beach break

The house is really nice and as listed. Great layout for an extended family of couples and perfect for beach-loving dogs. The location is great for short trips around Kapiti or a drive into Wellington.
