Rustic cabin with a water view. Kayaks provided, riverside nature trail.
Overlooking tidal Kennebec River. Open year-round.
A relaxing setting to gather with your family, a few friends, or for a getaway. The cabin is in a partly wooded setting with a nice view of the river, and is well away from the main road, so it’s quiet. It’s fully insulated with heat & AC for year-round comfort. Easy kayak put-in at any tide. Short trail along the riverside. 5 minutes away is Richmond, with stores, restaurants, gas, etc. This cabin is not the place for loud parties; please see our house rules.
If you decide to book: 1. This property is not a typical lake house, so it’s important that you know what to expect. Please read the description of the grounds below. Swimming is not great here. 2. On your device, please turn on Vrbo notifications. We will communicate with you through Vrbo’s messaging platform.
Below is more complete information about: * Grounds & outdoor amenities * Cabin interior & indoor amenities * Boating & fishing * Swimming (not ideal at the cabin) * Nearby places & driving times * Cleaning fee * House rules
GROUNDS The cabin is set back from the river, although there’s a wide view of the river from the cabin. You have full use of the property in front of the cabin, all the way out to the river. The riverfront is in its natural state. The riverbank is steep, but there is a nature trail that brings you to a place where water access is easy. At low tide, there are mud flats with tall marsh grass. See BOATING below about where to put in kayaks. This property is at the end of a lightly traveled dead-end dirt road, so it’s quiet and safe. The road passes between the cabin and the river. Our home is in a separate house, across the lawn up behind the cabin. Please see our MAP of the property — it's in among the photos of the cabin.
OUTDOOR AMENITIES (Apr-Oct) There's a campfire ring & free firewood, plenty of lawn chairs, a picnic table, a gas grill, a big lawn with some shade, a swing set, a hammock, a corn hole game, space for tents, and we provide 2 canoes and 4 kayaks with life vests & paddles.
CABIN INTERIOR The cabin’s interior is intentionally rustic and reminiscent of an old-time Maine “camp”. The bathroom and bedrooms are small. Besides those rooms, the larger part of the cabin is open-concept. We stay at many other vacation rentals and we take note of what's not so good, and then make improvements to our cabin accordingly. Our goal is to have anything you might need already in the cabin. Please see our FLOOR PLAN of the cabin — it's in among our photos. The cabin’s basement is not part of the rental: that’s where we keep our tools, and we may sometimes go down there through an outside entrance during your stay.
INDOOR AMENITIES There is sleeping for 10, kitchen, dining set, small bathroom with shower (no tub), living area, heat pump/AC, electric fireplace, WiFi, Roku TV with streaming and local over-the-air stations, Blu Ray player & movies, stereo w/Bluetooth, and a large covered porch. No meals are served, although coffee & tea are provided with the Keurig. A complete list of kitchenware is available upon request. The bunk beds are in the common area.
BOATING At low tide, there are mud flats with grass, so to avoid the mud, there is a short trail to the boat put-in, with two kayaks kept there so you don't have to carry kayaks down from the cabin. Please see our MAP of the property — it's in among the photos of the cabin. The tidal current is gentle and easy to overcome when paddling. Strong wind however, can create a challenge. To see a tide table for your dates here, do a search for ‘marine weather Richmond Maine tides’. • Kayaks: we provide several kayaks; most are sit-in, some are sit-on, one tandem, and one youth size. • Canoes: we provide two 3-person canoes. • Motorboats: if you bring a motorboat, there’s a public boat ramp on the opposite side of the river in Richmond (5 minutes away) for launching at any tide level.
HIKING We have a nature trail that runs along the river’s edge for a round-trip hike of 0.5 mile. We also have a list of nearby hikes you can drive to.
FISHING At the end of our nature trail, there is a popular fishing spot. Upon booking, we will send you links to Maine’s fishing regs and license application (license required to fish.) Striped Bass are what most people catch.
SWIMMING For the best swimming, there is a small public park with lakefront swimming about 20 minutes away, and two choices of ocean beaches about an hour away to the south. Swimming at the cabin is possible, but not good. There is no sandy beach at the cabin.
NEARBY PLACES and DRIVING TIMES 5 minutes away is Richmond with restaurants, pub, gas, stores, laundry and ice cream. We are also next to Swan Island Wildlife Management Area, with tours, trails and historic buildings. Within 20 to 30 minutes are more restaurants, shopping, attractions, and services. A more complete listing, including day trips and hiking trails, is in a binder in the cabin. Driving times from the cabin to... The cabin was very cozy and made for a welcoming environment for family. Our young grandsons loved all the options for toys and books. We were very comfortable in this cabin.
Cabin is great and in a great location. My wife and I really enjoyed our stay. Easy to get to many attractions from the cabin, but best part was Kennebec river view. Cabin owners were wonderful as well.
It was clean, easy to find with your instructions, super convenient to where we needed to go. And the setting was so absolutely gorgeous. You don’t get much prettier than Maine in the fall.
Our stay was fantastic!!! Cabin was clean and very well stocked. We loved the trails and kayaking. Location was remote and private but still well within driving distance to a variety of excellent tourist attractions.
This place was simply wonderful. It had everything we needed including soap and shampoo. We loved the way the Roku was set up; it was very easy to use. The beds were so comfortable! There were wonderful trails for walking our dog and the skies were super clear for star gazing
Kevin and Jacki have an amazingly beautiful property on the Kennebec River.
The view from the cabin is spectacular and the cabin itself has ever amenity you could need for an extended visit.
Their attention to detail and hospitality is unparalleled and we hope to return.
We had a great stay. Hosts had everything labeled. House was comfy and we felt comfortable in moments. Access to river, kayaks and canoes, great fishing, nice trail to walk by the river. Top notch VRBO!
The cabin was even better then the pictures, and the setting was perfect. Some family members went out canoeing and kayaking on the river and saw several bald eagles. We enjoyed the evening by the fire, and morning walks down by the river.
Clean and Very well stocked with supplies and towels, comfortable sleeping. Great outdoor setting. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. Thank you to our gracious hosts!! We had the best time ever. PS: The scavenger hunt thru the woods was a blast!!! We found everything
This cabin was the perfect place to stay while we were in town for Maine Ironman. Close to Augusta. Cute town and restaurants within just minutes, but quiet and private. Located on the river with a nice path beside the water. Very clean and a well-stocked kitchen.
Very neat and clean. Everything you would need is provided. Comfortable and relaxing. I’m almost afraid to give it the best rating…..not sure I want everyone knowing about amazing property; I wanna keep this gem to myself 😆
This was a delightful cabin, and even in the bad weather - we had constant rain during our 2 night stay, which finally ended early morning the day we left - we got out to explore the riverside trail, thanks to our dog! We were in the area for a meeting, and hope to return when we have more time to enjoy the cabin and all it has to offer. The space is set up well, and they had everything we needed. Very comfortable and cozy, thanks Kevin & Jacki!!
The owners were available for communication during our stay, the cabin was clean and well-stocked, the area beautiful.
The only changes we suggest are a new mattress for the queen sized bed (current one is a little lumpy and uncomfortable), and doing some trail maintenance, since we started to hike the trail but were unable to complete it, due to lack of upkeep.
Loved hearing the different sounds of the wildlife.

Thanks for the feedback. We investigated right away. We want our guest’s experiences to be great.
The mattress is all memory foam and quite soft, and may take a few moments to re-level after turning at night. We can appreciate it may be too soft. It will get replaced by a firmer mattress.
There is an informal trail that extends beyond the far end of ours that we are not allowed to maintain since it’s not ours. That has a difficult and deep dip that is hard for many people to get over. Based on your feedback, we think it would be best if we put up a sign to mark the end of our trail. We leave our trail in its natural state according to the lease agreement we have with the landowners. There are a couple muddy spots, but we are not permitted to add gravel or build bridges. All we can do is pick up fallen debris and obstacles. When we inspected it today, it seemed to be quite passable and in the state it should be, in other words, similar to any other wilderness trail.
Thanks again for your helpful comments.
What a delightful stay we had at the cabin! We weren't sure what time we were going to arrive and Kevin and Jacki left the porch lights on for us. What a welcoming sight as we drove in!
The cabin was exactly as described in the listing, clean, cozy, welcoming. We were 3 adults and 1 dog and it was just what we needed. The rooms were comfortable, spotless, and there was plenty of room for us. The nature trail along the river was ideal with our dog and a beautiful walk for us daily.
We hope to come again with our other sons.
Thank you so much for a much needed escape.
We rented this cabin for only 2 nights and we had so much fun! Even my 2 year old son had a blast with all the toys and play ground available for him. The place was so chill and quiet. The bonfire setup is on the spot! You can see the lake from where you’re sitting. The inside of the cabin is awesome. Everything we need is already in there. Just what we’re looking for. The host - kevin McKeen is really cool! He’s very accommodating. He even chopped more wood for the bonfire for us before we check in and he communicates very well to us. Thank you so much Kevin and McKeen Family!
Booked a weekend here for a guys weekend and it had everything you would need in the kitchen to cook. Plenty of beds and hangout spots/chairs. The owners were super responsive and had a very detailed and thoughtful information pack that was super organized. Honestly it has all the amenities you really need, reasonably priced, and feels welcoming to both families with little kids to a group of friends coming to hang out. Most of my friends and I have little kids under 5 and we were surprised by the level of child proofing with gates and the well stocked first aid kit in the bathroom. Plenty of toys and yard stuff as well. Definitely will look to book again in the future. Thank you for the stay!
I cannot believe how awesome this place was! Every time I thought I might need to go buy something - I found it. My family is from the area but I live 3 hours away so just wanted to host something that they didn't have to drive to...the boys all came Friday night and then the girls came Sunday night. It was so much fun!
We couldn’t have been happier with the hosts or the accommodations and the amenities. Being riverside was awesome, with trails and kayaks available for our use on the Kennebec, and a fire pit with lots of dry wood. Its location in the Midcoast is well placed for day trips to many locations. Will be back!!
I’m almost remiss to report how awesome this cabin is….I don’t want everyone else to discover this hidden gem!!! Everything you need is available, immaculate clean, relaxing, and enjoyable!! Already planning our trip!!! ♥️♥️
We had a very nice time at our stay here. The house and property were nice, just as described. Our kids enjoyed the selection of toys that they had at the house, and we enjoyed using the balls and other lawn games with them. This property seemed to have more thought put in and more extra stuff provided than any other vacation rental I've ever been to.
We are Kevin & Jacki McKeen. We live in the house next to the cabin; we had our house moved from a town 12 miles away in 1997. We also own and operate a sign-making business in Augusta. We have 4 adult children, with grandchildren, all living in this area.
Why they chose this property
The cabin started life as our dad's machine shop (in the basement). The upper structure had no partitions, electricity, plumbing or insulation - it was just storage. For about 15 years, we have been gradually improving this property, and in 2017 we started renting it, and we still continue to make improvements.
What makes this property unique
This is one of the more peaceful and quiet places you can find. It's at the end of a dirt road, so there's only an occasional car that creeps by. The river provides a nice breeze most days, which helps keep the bugs down, and the large lawn has plenty of both sun and shade. Only 5 minutes away is Richmond, with stores, restaurants, gas, laundry, and ice cream. Bald eagles are common here.
