About this property

About this property
Punga Heights Cabin is a cosy new two bedroom off-grid cabin nestled amongst the punga and native bush. It’s the perfect place to rest, relax and recharge, surrounded by nature.
If you’re looking for a relaxing base for your stay in the Marlborough Sounds then this cosy cabin is for you! Perfect for a couple or two, or a couple of friends looking for a spectacular spot to rejuvenate or explore the local area.
The cabin consists of three modules with a sliding door leading from each bedroom into the living area. Take the opportunity to open the sliding doors to create a more open plan space, or close them to create a more intimate and private experience while you drift off to sleep to the call of the Morepork, our native owl.
Each warm north-facing sun-filled bedroom contains a queen bed and a recliner chair, all that you need for a place to lay your head at the end of the day. Looking through the narrow high window at the back you will see the native bush, while the sliding door at the front leads out onto the deck with views out to the Mahau Sound and the channel markers for boat navigation.
Nestled between the two bedrooms is the communal space consisting of a couch, side table, and storage cupboards containing all the basics for your stay. A small fridge is provided, along with a supply of uv filtered drinking water.
Punga Heights Cabin is fully off the grid. The cabin is powered by solar which is for the use of lighting at night, powering the fridge, boiling the jug, and using the toaster or sandwich press. During stays with low sunshine hours please be aware of your usage. There is a large power bank for charging your devices.
The dining table and chairs, double burner gas bbq, outdoor chairs and bean bags ensure the deck is a valuable multipurpose outdoor space. It is edged by a balustrade, with steps leading from both ends.
Just a few paving steps away from the cabin is the large purpose built shower which utilises roof rainwater and is powered by a gas califont. If you follow the steps leading down into the bush you will see the compostable toilet nestled in the bush. Being set up over October/November are two outdoor clawfoot baths where you can lay back and listen to the bubbling creek and birdlife next to a nikau palm. Filled by underground water and powered by gas this is a true bush experience.
This 1.4 acre property also includes another dwelling, where the owners may be present. They have a private driveway and have their own track down to the shared drive for beach access, so you won’t be disturbed during your stay.
Bush Track, Waterfront & Beach Access:
Above Punga Heights Cabin is a seat with a view over Mahau Sound to the bush and hill towards Black Point. Following the track take a right turn at the Punga Track sign and enjoy the bush walk downhill beside the bubbling creek. The end of this track takes you out onto the shared drive.
Walking another few minutes downhill takes you all the way to the beach where you will find a simple seating area to rest in between swims, to fish from at high tide, or to sit and sip and watch the sunset.
There is a private jetty owned by our neighbours. This can be accessed from the beach only at mid and low tide. If using a boat please just load and unload on the jetty and respect other users.
We have two single sea kayaks and a Smartwave 2400 dingy for your use which are stored near the beach. Want to bring your boat? We have a mooring suitable for a 8 metre boat which can be used for an additional cost. When kayaking or using the dinghy know the tides and follow the contour of the land, or travel only a short distance and be aware of wind and water changes.
Swimming is best done at high tide from the beach. Wearing aqua shoes is recommended due to the sharp rock oyster shells (they aren’t always safe to eat either). Please be aware that the current that flows through the channel is strong. When swimming, swim close to the beach.

🏖️Stroll down to the beach for a swim, kayak, fish or to hang out

About the host
Your host

Your hosts, Vaughan and Tracey both love the Marlborough Sounds and want to share their perfect punga paradise with others. Purchasing this property early 2023 they've since poured their love and time into creating Punga Heights Cabin, its amenities and enhancing the landscape.
Having worked and lived in the outer Pelorus Sound for several years farming, Vaughan knew that he'd love to call this area home again in the future. He loves getting out on the water fishing, camping and hunting on the land, as often as he can.
Tracey grew up with the Marlborough Sounds on her doorstep, staying, kayaking, fishing and diving throughout much of the sounds over the years. She doesn't get out on or in the water as much these days but really appreciates the relaxation of sitting and appreciating the sights and sounds that surround.

Why they chose this property
Having looked throughout the Marlborough Sounds for a place to purchase we settled on Moetapu Bay because of its warm north-facing properties, its close proximity to Blenheim, and it being drive access.
We selected this section for its punga and variety of plants and trees, wee creek, existing dwelling, the properties potential, and of course the views. Being protected from the wind, and getting plenty of sunlight, the large property was exciting from the very first glimpse online.

What makes this property unique
The Punga Heights Cabin provides a chance to relax and recharge in a warm cosy off-grid cabin nestled amongst the punga and native bush. It offers the unique experience of an outdoor shower and composting toilet in the bush, the soon to be set up clawfoot baths under the canopy of a nikau, and walking access to the beach. The punga track is a super special feature and makes the walk to the beach easier on the legs and the eyes too!
