About this property

A simple kind of paradise

The house is perched on a slope over a pond on 10 acres with a dirt road in the front and conservation land in the back. While it is quiet it is not entirely remote: our home is close to the center of the town of Worthington in the Berkshires, 30 min from Northampton, 2 hours from Boston and 3.5 from New York City. Nested in nature, the property abuts looping trails that will take you through the woods from green lush summer to multi color fall, to winter when snow covers the hills. You can actually ski out the back onto to what used to be cross country trails, most of which are still skiiable. This is a mountain wetland and the Fall season with the diversity of trees and strident colors is particularly spectacular.

The house is a comfortable, rustic farm house with all the necessary amenities (heating system, dishwasher, laundry washer/dryer, smart TV, broad band WIFI internet, etc.). At its center is a wide kitchen with cathedral ceiling and a wood stove. The long counter and a butcher block allow you to cook as a team. This is where we spend most of our time in the winter. The dining room with its elegant fireplace competes with the "panorama room" and its large bay window and a view on the pasture. There is an office space with a desk, and a "three season room" where you are invited to write your memoir. It is more of a one season room a summer room with a view on the pond and birds. Two rooms upstairs, two bathrooms downstairs make it easy for two couples to share the space, or for a small family to feel home.

You can access the whole house, its vegetable garden, its 10 acres of land, as well as the 70 acres of forest behind it. The barn is off limits. The pond is not deep enough to swim or sink in. You are welcome to help yourself in our vegetable gardens, but please stay away from the terraced garden for it's easy to slip and fall down the stone stairs. The pond freezes in winter and can be skateable if swept.

A dog lives here part time and while we clean very very thoroughly if you are extremely allergic to dogs this house is not for you.

While you are close to the center of Worthington, there is only one small store there, a post office, a library, two restaurants and one bar, a farm store and the historical archive. The Golf club is also at walkable distance.

We have a separate driveway which makes parking and turning around easy. We recommend renting a four or all wheel drive in the winter, from December to April, for the road may not be plowed every day.

Please note that we give priority to dog owners - because we love dogs, and in order to avoid competing with the wonderful Goldenrod Inn at the end of our street.

Great remote getaway

Want to get away from it all? Have the dogs run the fields? See the stars in the absolute darkness? Enjoy peace and quiet? This is the place for you. If coming in the winter, 4WD or AWD is likely a must. We loved it.

Amazing getaway

We cannot say enough how much we enjoyed our stay. Our dog was in heaven as well with plenty of room to run and play. The location was just remote enough to feel like a true escape, but perfectly situated near enough villages to feel as connected as we needed to while there. The house is beautifully decorated and kept up and it suited our needs perfectly. We would love to come back one day!

Great stay

The hosts were wonderful. Great location close to Notchview. My only reluctance in this review is to say too much great stuff about it because I'd like to come back some time. :-)

Nice private house. The kitchen was perfect. Our dogs loved the trails right out the back door. We were a little bumed the fireplace wasn't working, otherwise it was great

A Lovely Weekend

My family & I just spent the weekend at this lovey, charming home. The kitchen, where we spend time preparing meals, was warm and inviting. There were plenty of cozy rooms to enjoy quiet time if we wanted. Although it rained everyday we still ventured out to explore the wonderful property and were greatly rewarded as we saw deer and several colonies of newts! Thank you Marie & Harriet for sharing your lovely home with us! Lillian S. , Warwick, NY

What a lovely stay

We absolutely loved this place. We were hoping to find somewhere quiet, picturesque, and near good hiking. We could not have found a better match. The house is a lovely old farmhouse with lots of charm. The feeling of the place makes you want to move in: Cozy furnishings, great books, fascinating artifacts. At the same time, we found that everything worked, with a strong shower, comfortable beds, and a great farmhouse kitchen that made you want to whip out your recipes. The two brands of za’atar sealed the deal. The view around the house is lovely, with a garden, a goldenrod meadow, the old red barn, and a pond on one side. We were thrilled that the mowed paths through the meadow led to a trail system into the Fox Den preserve. We hiked for hours down through the string of beaver ponds. Serenity! This place must be amazing when it snows, with its mudroom and access to trails. This was our first time in the Berkshires and we were smitten. Northampton, with all it has to offer, is a half hour away. We recommend the Goldenrod Restaurant, just down the hill, and the Creamery, which had amazing pastries.

Farm and field

We had a fantastic time at the farmhouse in Western Massachusetts. The property was as advertised, a classic 1854 Farmhouse of a bygone era. It's an authentic house, not newly renovated by any means, but that is its charm. It's clean and well organized and appointed, kept up cozy and comfortable. It was perfect for us, a college aged student, parents, and a grandma. All of us, except for the college kid, at some point have lived in similar places, and we all felt right at home. The house, surrounded by hundreds of acres of forest/woodland, was a great place to spend time, and to come home to after exploring. Three sugar shacks (pancakes etc) are within easy reach, as is endless hiking and exploring. The hosts were most wonderful. Everything we needed was there, they are responsive and accommodating, but also stay out of your way to let you have a good time. They are not onsite but some hosts have 1000 rules so you can't move in a place or feel at home, not the case here. They let you enjoy the house and your stay, with just sensible house rules to make your stay work for all. 5 out of 5. Highly recommend this rental.

Slice of heaven & secret garden.

This beautiful rustic home made us feel so welcomed and at home. Truly this property is a slice of heaven on earth. The kitchen is fun to cook in with room for others to pitch in. The living spaces are spread out and allows everyone their own space for down time. Great accommodations. Plenty of grounds to be adventurous, or sit and watch the many flying creatures. Just a wonderful setting to relax during the day, and stargaze at night. Thank you Marie and Harriett

Just Lovely

It was just lovely. Secluded, with beautiful woods and trails outback. Our dog was over the moon. The giant bright kitchen was perfect—bialetti espresso maker AND a French press, a million spices, and a wood stove. My daughter wrote a paper in the cozy study. Beds comfy. Giant table in living room for doing puzzles. Sena Farm Brewpub 10 minutes away—you can bring your kids and your dog. Thanks Marie—Hope to return!

Out of the city and into nature

Spent a lovely two weeks here. Enjoyed the quiet, hiking, bird watching, and being able to cook in a large and well-sticked kitchen. Lots of farm stands nearby to buy fresh corn and berries. Good wifi if you have to work.

Charming house, perfect views, friendly town

This house provides the perfect home base for our much needed vacation. We spent a lot of time in the living room looking out the panoramic window at the range of birds and listening to the bullfrogs. We also cooked in the fully functional kitchen, with great seating for chatting and relaxing. It was great to be able to go hiking from out the back door and we found places to kayak within short drives. Our favorite was the Chesterfield marshes which was in a photo in the property’s listing (but you may need a local to tell you where it is, as it’s not marked in maps). The local restaurant, the Rabbit Hole, was great (and had outdoor seating) and we also took a few day trips to Mass MoCA in North Adams and to window shop in Northampton. We communicated very easily with our hosts — at first via the Vrbo site and then by text. They were very welcoming and clearly ready to help if we needed anything. But we never asked for a thing because the house had all we needed and more, including puzzles and good books for the few rainy afternoons we had!

Wonderful!

We had a lovely 5-day stay at Marie’s home. It’s clear that a lot of love has gone into this place, and we could not have enjoyed it more. It’s a perfect, serene retreat, with an amazing trail network out the back door and all sorts of birds to keep you entertained from the house. Great sledding hill too! Marie was a great host, and the house is very comfortable and had everything we could wish for. Highly Recommended!

Perfect Retreat!

What a special place! Only two hours from Boston, but we definitely felt like we really escaped. The house is a perfect blend of old farmhouse charm and modern amenities, and beautifully decorated with ample supplies. The property is really special - plenty of space to roam around and very picturesque. To top if off, the owners are incredibly responsive and helpful. We hope to return!!!

Perfect quiet retreat

I spent a week in this lovely home with my dog, enjoying the beauty and solitude. The location is perfect for getting away from it all, and enjoying the quiet and beauty of nature. The home is clean, and well furnished -- I cooked all my meals in the large, light, and well-equipped kitchen. The views from the panorama room did not disappoint. Communication with the owners was terrific - they were very helpful and available. I will definitely be coming back.
