Wonderful property on sugar island out of the way and quiet but still quick and easy trip to town. Great for freighter watching as well. Awesome place to watch a sunset.
Felt like going to the old family cabin. We barely left the house and enjoyed the laidback lifestyle and views. Plus wild strawberries all throughout the yard!
house was in a great location. the host was awsome, gave us lots of fishing pointers. overall very relaxing, house has everything! Thanks again for such a pleasant stay! we will be back for sure.

Family vacation
We came to Sault Ste Marie for a family vacation before a softball tournament. Checking in and communicating with the owner was simple and easy. The property was not mowed until Thursday of our week stay. The shoreline was completely overgrown. We had to also dig out the fire pit from the weeds to be able to use it. The one couch was covered in pet hair and there was lots of food left in the fridges and cabinets, so storing any food for our stay was difficult. All the closets and dressers were also full so we had to leave all our clothes in our suitcases for the entire week. The fridges were also dirty and so were some of the floors. We had to change one sheet on a bed because it was dirty as well. The owner does leave a pass for the boat, which is very nice. He also leaves lots of pamphlets of things to do around the area (although out dated). It was definitely better than staying in a hotel and we loved being right on the water.
Great time at the cottage. Very comfortable and had everything we needed. Like others have said, this is a lake cottage experience with a very “up north” no-frills vibe. The place is wellstocked and great for getting away from it all. We brought a kayak and watched the freighters pass by daily. Loved it!! There were a few boats available on the property for use at your own risk, which is nice, but they weren’t very accessible so we used our own, We were able to rent a pontoon boat elsewhere on the island to get out on the water for fishing. There was a Weber grill for use and some outdoor chairs, but the fire pit was a bit overgrown, so we didn’t use it. The convenience store is a short drive away and we did use that to get a couple steaks and some night crawlers for bait. Overall, a great stay and we would consider coming here again. The inside furniture was great for our family of 5 with teens to stretch out and relax. Some suggestions might be to add an outdoor table or patio and make the outdoor space more enjoyable— lots of nice waterfront access, but we didn’t use it as much as we would have liked. Great communication and Joe was a great host. Thanks for sharing your place with us!!
Joe was a VERY responsive host with a very unique property on Sugar Island just outside of Sault Ste. Marie. Our family of four was very comfortable in the rustic setting right on the water.
If you're looking for a unique spot (where you actually have to take a ferry back and forth to Sugar Island!) with a TON of charm and picturesque settings to call home base while you explore the UP, this is the place for you!
The place and location were incredible. It was awesome to sit and watch the big boats go by. Even saw a few bald eagles which was totally amazing. Would definitely love to come back again sometime and would highly recommend it for anyone.
Are you looking for a 5-star resort with every amenity available? This is not the place. Are you looking for a cozy home with a cabin-like feel where you can relax and not see another person if you don’t want to? Then this is the place. Beautiful views, comfortable home, and a friendly property owner. If we go back to Sugar Island, this is definitely where we would stay!
Great place to stay. The location was nice, right on the St. Mary River. The home was decorated nicely and contained just about everything we needed. However, it appears that the owner is building/rebuilding the place himself and it still needs some finish work. For example, the movable partition wall that creates the 3rd bedroom from the living room is not working quite right yet. There were also various electrical issues with some switches not doing anything and some lights unable to be turned on, even after replacing light bulbs. There was a hole from the bottom of an upstairs bedroom directly to the ceiling over the dining area ceiling downstairs. And finally, the HVAC is not working right. No matter how we set the thermostat, it got near 80 degrees upstairs overnight every day despite it cooling off outside to the high 50's.
Aside from those inconveniences, I would recommend the property. It was great fun for the kids to travel over and back on the ferry every day from the Sault.
My family and I had never been up in the UP before. We had rented cabins the year Pryor due to COVID, so we decided to do it again. I’m glad we chose to do this. We were able to bring our pets along and we were able to enjoy many of the things the UP has to offer.
We had an excellent trip to Sugar Island to Joe’s lovely cabin that he built himself! It is such a wonderful space and gave us a nice area to spread out and relax as a family. The house had plenty of space for us to all have our own bed, which is awesome for our family of five. Even the Murphy bed was incredibly comfortable. We had tons of room to sit and relax in the family room and plenty of chairs for our group to sit and eat meals together as well. The kitchen had everything we were looking for and even had things like an ice cream scoop, an apple corer, and plastic children’s cups. He even had a step stool in the bathroom that was the perfect height for our two year old. We realized that we had forgotten one when we were on the way and were thrilled that there was one there at the house. There were even things there that we had packed not knowing if we would need them or not that we wouldn’t have needed to! There were plenty of towels and lots of extra bedding and pillows if we needed them. The views were amazing and we loved watching the sunset each night. Joe was incredibly kind and generous and accommodating and each interaction we had with him was positive. He was easily reachable for any issues and was in contact with us to remind us about things like the garbage pick up. Our kids loved watching the freighters, splashing around in the water, and taking some spins on the boats. We enjoyed a lovely campfire with hot dogs and s’mores as well until the pesky mayflies swarmed in, but nothing you can do about that! We enjoyed visiting the surrounding area and seeing the Soo Locks, the Tahquamenon Falls, and some of the light houses. We visited some of the few shops on the island as well and were met with very kind and gracious people everywhere we went. The convenience store had everything we were looking for. We enjoyed the lovely owners at the Hilltop Bar, and most of all, the adorable Nest Keepers gift shop that is only a few doors down. The owner of Nest Keepers was so sweet and the shop is adorable! You must walk over there and check it out. We got some unique souvenirs from there, including a Sugar Island Christmas ornament so we can always remember our visit. She lists her hours on her Facebook page. I had never heard of Sugar Island until I happened upon this listing on VRBO, and I’m so glad that we got to experience it! Thank you, Joe, for your wonderful hospitality! Book this place, you won’t regret it!
This home was very spacious and had all that you need to either relax and watch freighters and sunsets, go for a cool swim in the beautiful clear lake water or jog into town for shopping. Sault Ste Marie has a great bookstore worth checking out. Sugar Island has a welcoming feel. Joe, the owner of the cabin was super friendly and informative as was everyone else we met.

Thank you so much for taking good care of our cabin and for your kind words. We look forward to hosting you again!
Owner was great about answering questions prior to our visit. Cabin was well stocked and owner offered some boats available. Layout was good and beds comfortable. On demand hot water. View was fantastic. Only negative comment was that one of the upstairs beds had a broken support for the box spring, and the second fridge needed a cleaning.
Many extra amenities such as coffee for Kuerig Coffeepot, charcoal for grill, and many others. Beds were comfortable and so was couch and chairs. Overall atmosphere is as great. Ferry was easy to get on and off. Host always available.
