About this property

Finger Lakes Cottage: Stunning Sunsets, Water & Waterfalls, Wine Country

"Nature is not a place to visit, it is home".
Home is a lake facing year round cottage, newly renovated with an open common area, new kitchen and appliances. ( Due to supply chain issues, counters ar present are perfectly functional but temporary.) Master bedroom suite and laundry are on the first floor making it accessible for people with mobility challenges. Two interconnected loft style bedrooms are upstairs. The detached garage functions as a summer rec room with a private backyard, garden and patio, grill, fire pit, dining area and comfy seating. We have everything you need to relax, renew and recreate. Two rights of way provide lake and beach access and unlike many sites on the Finger Lakes, there are no cliffs or stairs to navigate to get to the water. There is a small craft boat launch on site and a state launch 5 miles at the north end where kayaks, paddle boards and party boat rentals are also available to rent.
Water play aside, there are treasures galore to dive into. Whether you enjoy biking around the stunning glacially carved lakes (11 parallel gems) and rolling drumlin hills, or hiking the sculpted gorges with their magical vistas and waterfalls or sipping a cold one overlooking the scenic beauty from one or many of the plentiful wineries, breweries and distilleries of the region, or splurging on a great antique or fantastic pair of shoes before a sumptuous dinner or a night of theater, the Finger Lakes has marvelous abundance and sparkles joy. History buffs or the generally curious will find upstate NY compelling; Women's suffrage (Seneca Falls), abolitionists (Harriet Tubman-Auburn), religious awakenings, prison reform (the electric chair!), industrialization (Erie Canal), layer past and present in the moment.
As the weather turns colder the Finger Lakes become a winter wonderland. Skiing, both downhill and cross country as well as snow shoeing, abounds. Then the lake is an icy playground and winter walking, a meditative endeavor.
Please come stay with us. Ideally we are looking for an active family who enjoys the simpler pleasures of country life. Although we are renovated, we are a work in progress. We rely on fans and cool lake breezes in addition to bedroom air conditioners and especially enjoy a dip or a good long swim in the lake when it's hot. Do throw open the windows, never mind locks on the doors. Although we have TV and Wifi, the book shelves are also stocked, board games and decks of cards are on the shelves, bats and balls, lawn bowls and bocci all call for play. It is a peaceful place to immerse yourself and enjoy quality family time. Nearby museums and attractions abound. The wine in the region is second only to Napa as is area theater to Broadway. Skaneateles has attracted presidents and is a quaint lakeside village to stroll, shop and dine. Auburn too offers excellent dining options and the beauty of take out! Come enjoy the simple and memorable pleasures with your family and friends. We love to entertain and are certain you will fall in love with the Finger Lakes!

I am a local who traveled the world and found her way back home to family and friends when I began my own family 25 years ago. I grew up on the lake when everyone had 'camps' and families lived in town during the winter. Camps of course made perfect places for teenage parties as well as memories to last a life time! I 'm an educator in Skaneateles. I had the pleasure of my children during COVID and now my daughter has returned to Burlington and my son attends RIT . We have a golden retriever named Lila and a cat named Squishy. I'm very much looking forward to traveling again as well.

Why they chose this property

I love where I live! A little rustic, a little old-fashioned, a lot friendly, a lot of fabulous art and creativity and simple family fun within a realm of unspoiled natural beauty. No crowds, no hustle and bustle. As the ice has melted over the last weeks, the lake has come alive with the bird calls of geese and seagulls and even cows lowing in the distance- finally the arrival of Spring! Soon farmer's markets will have seasonal produce and flowers and Amish markets, antique shops, and country stores will be fertile ground for snappy bargains. And my favorites!-live music (everywhere!) and the opening of all the seasonal ice cream shops!
This property probably isn't for you if you're looking for fancy or state of the art. Think whimsy, a bit quirky, a chance to step out barefoot onto the grass with a mug of something hot or cold to watch sunset or stare in awe at the moon and stars... think open windows, unlocked doors, steak on the grill, starlit fire.... We are a family home, a house of personal treasures to be enjoyed and shared as well as respected. We are best suited for a family and children. Pets are welcome but limited to two.
