Mill Dam Cottage is good for the soul! The property is very comfortable, well-equipped and maintained, and has every amenity imaginable for little children through senior adults. The location can't be beat for relaxing water views, kayaking, a beautiful walk right out of the driveway through a nature reserve, across the Wiggly Bridge and across Fisherman's Walk to the beach near Stage Neck Inn and Off the Boat Lobsters. Not to mention easy access to great restaurants, shopping and antiquing in York and nearby Ogunquit and Kennebunk. It's a magical place and we highly recommend it!
We had an amazing time staying at this property. Lovely house, yard, pool, and pool house. Our entire family, including our dog, hope to visit again soon. Thanks!
This property is stunning! We have been looking forward to this trip and staying at the house for over a year. It was amazing! Very clean and though it is a large house, it felt cozy and comfortable- lots of porches and windows and places to gather and enjoy the amazing views. We could watch the lobster boats and herons all day. Our kids loved exploring the mud flats at low tide and kayaking, as well as walking to Wiggly Bridge. We hosted grandparents here, as well. It was our best vacation yet! Very much hope to return. Our only complaint is we wanted more time. The hosts are friendly and responsive.
Beautiful, perfectly maintained and comfortable property; just as represented on the VRBO site. Wonderful communications with owner and caretaker although these were courtesies as there were no issues with anything. As our visiting friends and family observed, it is hard to imagine what could improve upon our stay. Highly recommend; a very unique and wonderful property!
Mill Dam Cottage will definitely be one of my Top 10 places in my life. Our family stayed here for our son's wedding at the York Golf and Tennis Club. This home is historic, beautiful, artfully decorated, comfortable, well stocked,.. we rarely left the property ! The groom and groomsmen enjoyed the river, pool and barn the day of the wedding. The bride and bridesmaids had a wonderful day in the house and on the front porch. Fantastic pictures !
Highlights: wildlife on the river, fishing, lobster boats, kayaking, sunrise, sunsets over your shoulder, swimming, coffee on the porch, lounging, walks, biking, seafood,...
Wonderful and responsive host ! I can't say enough good things!
When we decided to try Maine for a 3-generation family vacation, we chose Mill Dam Cottage because it had all the important characteristics we were seeking. That said, we had no idea just how wonderful it would be! The rustic elegance of the cottage was perfect - charm and character in the most beautiful setting. We enjoyed the seclusion of the location, and yet it was close to groceries and only 15 minutes away from other towns for exploring. The setting among the pine trees with a view of the river - wow! We had our coffee on that front porch every morning. The children spent hours in the pool and on the swing. The barn was a fantastic added feature.
Axel always promptly and graciously answered my questions in the months leading up to our stay. Thank you for opening your home so that others may enjoy this special place.
If you can afford this week long rental, do it. If anything, the listing undersells the property. The house was terrific and very comfortable for 7 adults and 4 kids( ages 8-12).The two back porches were great for dining, simply looking out at the river, or morning coffee. The kayaking was terrific(2 doubles and 2 singles with plenty of life jackets) and the river was clean and refreshing. The location near the wiggly Bridge and 1 mile from the bagel shop was perfect. Plenty of well maintained lawn for games like corn hole, races, whiffle ball etc. The pool , deck and the barn is where we spent a lot of time every day. The barn has bathroom, shower, washer and dryer, plenty of pool towels and a great ping pong table
I expected a lot but the experience was even better than what I had hoped. Perfect
We are living in a world of deliveries!
Soooo……. Do you want a vacation that delivers all the right stuff….. Fresh air, Atlantic Ocean, New England towns, York River, kayaking, a heated pool and a beautiful home that has scenic views from every window and most importantly will create cherished family memories?
If you answered yes, this is it; It delivered for us. We loved it!!!
Mill Dam Cottage provided us with a magical vacation destination. We delighted in the scenic and serene background, fireflies at night, bald eagles in the morning, church bells chiming and beautiful breezes on the front porch any time of day. We kayaked, swam, biked, fished, walked, and explored the shoreline but best of all we spent time together as a family on the front porch. This home has absolutely everything you need to enjoy a week away and the owner makes you feel as if it is your own. We found the location perfect for our family because it was remote, scenic, and private but there were restaurants and attractions nearby to keep us all plenty busy over the week. Truly the only problem you will find with this rental, is that you have to leave at the end.
It’s hard to convey what a great property this is. The pictures don’t do it justice. The location is picture perfect, quiet and secluded, but so close to historic sites, hiking trails, the beach, great food, and shopping too, if that’s your thing. Eleven adults found this historic home comfy and cozy, but spacious enough so we could enjoy our own spaces too. The house is well appointed and was immaculately maintained and clean as a whistle. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare and serve meals out on the beautiful porch. It was a magical week and we all proclaimed this to be our favorite rental home ever, and we’ve had some really nice ones! One last thing…the property owner and caretaker were friendly, helpful and accommodating. We would recommend Mill Dam Cottage without hesitation and hope to stay here again ourselves!
There aren’t enough superlatives to describe our time at Mill Dam Cottage. We were in York, ME, for our daughter's wedding and wanted a place as a home base that would be comfortable, easily accommodate our family, and have space to enjoy drop in guests. The Cottage exceeded our expectations and admirably served as our home away from home. Our hosts made us feel welcome from our first exchange as they entrusted us with their beautiful traditional Maine home. Personal touches throughout only reinforced that feeling as we discovered inviting and warmly decorated spaces. The highlight for us was the back porch. Our memories of the week will forever include morning coffee overlooking the York River at sunrise with its parade of water birds looking for their morning meal – including a bald eagle; and of hearty laughter from family and friends getting reacquainted after too much time apart.
On a more practical note, the amenities were exactly as described – plenty of space both inside and out, abundant parking, easy to access, and a beautiful and reinvigorating setting with tall trees and an expansive lawn all sitting on the river. And the heated pool and pool house are fabulous. Everything was in perfect order and thoroughly cleaned. The location was convenient for our needs with easy access to Kittery and Portsmouth to the south. Abundant amenities are nearby including a food market, delis, and breakfast places. Our host was consistently generous and accommodating with a bottle of champagne to celebrate the occasion. We cannot recommend our hosts and their home more highly!
Mill Dam Cottage made our special week celebrating our daughter’s wedding all the better. We are sure that it and our hosts will be part of our fondest memories for many, many years to come.
Not enough good things to say about Mill Dam Cottage, or our hosts. Check-in was seamless and the property is truly something special. 10/10 would definitely stay again.
For such a big home, you feel its warmth. The history too.
The location is great! You can walk to Wiggly Bridge, The Dockside Restaurant and to buy lobsters right off the boat!
Having the fun barn & pool made the vacation even more enjoyable!
The back porch overlooking the tidal river was amazing!
You will truly appreciate this part of the home. The boats going by, the wildlife, and the early morning sunrises! Always something to see!
The owners are quick to answer any questions you may have and the property manager, Steve, was very nice!
Book!! You will be very happy staying here!!!
The pictures in the listing do not do the property justice as its breathtaking upon arrival. The tall pines, the views of the York river, the pool, and tranquility of the setting made for the perfect setting to unplug for a week.
We travelled with 8 adults and three toddlers in addition and there was something to do for everyone. The beaches are only a short drive away and afterwards the family was able to relax by the pool house / pool and cool off. The house is located on a quiet street and a near some nice hiking trials which we used nearly every morning to take the kiddos to the wobbly bridge.
Axel and his family have created a beautiful retreat and be sure to enjoy your morning coffee on the front porch which was one of my favorite activities.

We are a German family of 6 who have lived in the US, love the people, the country and especially Maine. We use Mill Dam Cottage as our family summer retreat and rent it out since the very beginning - but this year the first time with VRBO. Mill Dam Cottage and the York River is a miraculous place. Once you have been there, you will never forget it.
