A little history:
The 21st century "rue Sainte-Catherine" is a long straight ribbon lined with shops that form the basis of its identity and notoriety, practically corresponds to the cardo maximus, i.e. the main north-south road, of the open city of the first three centuries of our era.
From the construction of the rampart in the Lower Empire, despite successive extensions, the density of constructions increases inside the walls, and the straight line disappears in favor of a less rigorous layout, each portion of street receiving a different name.
It was only around 1855 that the entire street was given the unique name of Sainte-Catherine, while the straightening that had begun in the 18th century was gradually being completed.
