Two stories of artisan woodwork cut with hydropower mills in the 1880's and finished by hand, crowned with a beautiful walnut staircase that's inviting and comfortable for any group. A perfect space to entertain, relax and enjoy each other's company. The "Poff" home is a classic American Four Square built by W.J. "Jack" and Minnie Poff, owners of the local mill and distillery that provides ideal accommodations for multiple families, reunions, and large group gatherings.
Typical of Southern homes built before electricity and air conditioning (it now has both), a spacious covered porch wraps around three sides of the home providing a wonderful place to sit, relax and enjoy the ambience of lightning bugs and summer rain storms.
Inside you’re greeted by the walnut staircase and parlor to the right with the a set of pocket doors leading to the wood paneled dining room with spacious seating for 10. The master suite with a solid wood king sized bed is to the left. A modern kitchen equipped with all the pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery any culinary savvy family would find useful for typical meal prep with an adjacent breakfast nook with seating for 7.
Upstairs you’ll find 4 additional bedrooms. Three with queen sized beds and a fourth with dual trundle beds. An additional sitting room with a hide-a-bed sofa is adjacent to one of the queen rooms. Down the hall is a laundry room with washer and dryer with an covered second story balcony porch with outdoor seating.
Over 30 original pieces of artwork sourced locally are scattered throughout the home.
Three full bathrooms, two with original claw foot tubs when indoor plumbing was added in the early 1900’s and one with a corner shower.

About the host
Hosted by Justin Pederson
Our family of 8 lives down the road on a 46 acre farm with horses, turkeys, chickens & bunnies. Encouraged by my wife who's had a crush on this home for years, and tired of me running my business out of our bedroom on a card table, we purchased this home for me to have some space to run my HVAC business which I do from the spare lower laundry room during the weekdays. We also have the opportunity to enjoy the home ourselves and now have the opportunity to share it with others.
Why they chose this property
It's hard not to let your mind wonder when you walk through the FourSquare. What were the original owners like? Who were the skilled craftsman that cut, milled, and fashioned the beautiful woodwork? Where did they keep the horse and buggy's?
We're not the first that have fallen under the homes beautiful spell but it's certainly fun to be a part of its (recent) history and preserve it for those in the future.
Large enough to bring multiple families together, or charming enough for an intimate couples getaway in a historic home in Floyd County. It's spacious floorpan, and 68 places to sit scattered throughout the inside and outside of the home make it great for family gatherings or quiet conversations.
