THE TOWN:
HISTORY: Long before Sandpoint officially became a city in 1907, it was part of the home of the Kalispel Tribe of Native Americans. Their ancestral lands extended across all of Priest and Pend Oreille Lakes, up the Pend Oreille River into Canada, and as far east as Montana.
Northern Pacific Railroad (NPR) surveyors arrived in the area in 1880, attracting a few permanent settlers. That same year, a general store opened in what was then called Pend Oreille, and a little settlement sprouted up on the east side of Sand Creek opposite the present Sandpoint City site. By 1882, Northern Pacific began building the stretch of railroad that ran between Montana and the tiny community of Pend Oreille. The settlement grew slowly over the next decade, during which time its name was changed to Sandpoint.
One of only a few nationwide, the NPR depot is still operational and in active use today. Recognized for its physical and design integrity, the depot station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Having suffered three fires in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the depot station is the last remaining structure of the original town. Sandpoint is the only Idaho community with an Amtrak station. "The Empire Builder" train travels between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, taking passengers on an exciting adventure through majestic wilderness, following the footsteps of the early American pioneers, Lewis and Clark! The mesmerizing, whimsical sounds of this historic railway are still enjoyed by residents and tourists today.
TODAY: Sandpoint was recently awarded the title of “America’s Most Beautiful Small Town” in a contest sponsored by USA Today and Rand McNally!
Nestled in a land of unforgettable natural beauty, situated between three mountain ranges and on exquisite Lake Pend Oreille (POND-ə-RAY), Sandpoint is a visitor-friendly and artsy community that offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation plus arts and cultural events happening year-round.
