About this property
Lake Superior Tri-level: Spacious 4bed/2ba cabin on 8 acres & Finnish sauna
Detroit Zen Center monks & students use this hermitage for retreats half the year, and rent to guests the other half. Our hermitage has a tri-level floor plan, and sits 100 yards from Lake Superior, with a 100 yard circular walking path down to 360' of her shoreline (pebbles & rocks). Set on 8 rolling acres of wooded land, 2 woodstoves we have a traditional Finnish wood-fired Sauna just behind the main cabin. The property sits 1/4 mile from the entrance to Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park.
Entering off the main road, down a 1/4 mile wooded drive, to park in front of the large tongue-and-groove hand-milled home, with a friendly front porch with a stone chimney, chairs & lots of wood! Enter into a light-filled, spacious, open concept main living area - living - dining room - kitchen. It includes a woodstove, wood floors, stone chimney, smart tv, surrounded by huge windows & a wall of sliding glass doors going out to a deck that looks down to the lake & the walking paths. The dining table seats 8. At the back of the main floor is a master bedroom with its own stone chimney & woodstove, as well as a large picture window overlooking the land. Just outside the master bedroom is a full, marble tiled bathroom.
Upstairs is a loft bedroom, with a private bedroom with its own large deck adjacent. The loft has a full bed with an antique desk & walk in closet. The adjacent fully enclosed bedroom has a king sized and a full sized bed, and a large deck.
Downstairs is a lower level walkout -- a standalone space with a sitting room, bedroom, and full bathroom, as well as a separate entrance door that leads to a deck, the walking trails & lake.
The heating system is very efficient & radiant (no furnace or forced air noise/dust), and we are very well insulated -- the 2 woodstoves add charm & coziness in winter. In summer, the lake keeps us cool, but we do have AC here as well.
Our road leads to the Lake of the Clouds, and is within minutes of endless hiking, cross country trails, waterfalls, & 2 miles from the Porcupine Mountain Downhill Ski Resort. Our hermitage is set 1/4 mile down a driveway, away from the main road, and is very quiet, and very private. Our land is filled with old-growth hemlock, oak, maple, cedar & pine. Deer & turkey & other wildlife are abundant. We enjoy exploring all the area has to offer, and it truly is like heaven on earth here.
We have high speed wifi, and use it for our phone service (cell service is spotty up here). We have a smart tv with Roku, and you can use netflix, hbo, fox sports, tcm, and much more. Our shoreline is lovely and rocky -- 1/4 west is an endless sandy beach as well. The historic mining town of Ontonagon is 12 miles east (15 minutes), where you can find an IGA grocery store, hospital, & full amenities. We are just outside Ontonagon in Silver City, where there is an Americinn Hotel 1 mile away, with a full bar & menu, or try Konteka -- a bowling alley & full restaurant 6 miles away in White Pine.

Host is extremely welcoming and accommodating! This property is great. The cabin is very spacious and everything is well labeled for ease of use. It is far enough off the road and away from neighbors to feel secluded with a path to the lake to enjoy the morning sunrises. The wood burning sauna was a welcomed luxury after a long day of cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Speaking of, this property is less than 5 minutes from the Porcupine Mountain Downhill Ski Resort and hiking trails. My group had an absolutely fantastic time and will be looking to come back again!
Fully stocked kitchen, moreso than other places I've stayed. Plenty of beds, perfect for a work group. Very private and back off the road. Beautiful lake access. My staff loved the sauna.
Our stay at the Cloud Mountain Hermitage exceeded our expectations. We immediately felt at home. We loved the location, especially the view of Lake Superior, and our proximity to the Porkies. The hermitage was very clean, comfortable, and relaxing. Also, our host, Emju, was incredibly helpful and responsive.
This place is amazing!Beautiful, comfortable, very private, and super convenient to Porcupine Mountains. It is maybe 1-1/2 miles to the visitor center. The place is also huge, with plenty of room. Our host, Emju was wonderful, helpful and responsive.

I host was a pleasure to work with! The house was not your expectations for a VRBO. The cleanliness was lacking. Bugs were foud in quite a few places and hair clog stuck to the bathroom wall. The furniture is does not match and is on the worn out side. No salt places out for us to shove and salt the outside areas to make it safe to walk.

Hello Savannah. This is our first negative review in all 7 years we have opened our hermitage up to renters. We refunded you the entire cleaning fee which I now regret, because you described and sent photos of 2 flies and a hair dustball in lower bath. I go to great pains and measures to care for this place outside and in.
Indeed if temps rise in late fall/early winter, cluster flies can hatch as they do in every home throughout the region. Finding one on a sill and another up in a tiny web at the ceiling - wall edge was not alarming to me but was to you.
Our caretaker and her husband cleaned 2 days before you arrived and touched up the day of.
Our furniture is of high quality. Every bed frame is within 2 -3 years old, every mattress high quality memory foam purchased together 1 year ago. Our meditation center in Detroit owns the property and has spent $75,000 on upgrades, site work and interior renovations over 7 years. Many antiques are there and its true the furniture does not match. That is by design. The large leather sofa, oak desks and dressers, and antique oak dining room table are old, but beautiful and just fine. We don't throw away high quality items unless they are no longer functional or comfortable. We appreciate their rustic beauty as hav3 many others.
I am sorry you were so disappointed. I recommend you stick to places that advertise modern IKEA style decor and avoid wilderness cabins. Our listing explicitly warns of flies, mosquitoes and mice all of which we go to extreme measures to mitigate. But humans are definitely in the minority in tge western UP!
Our stay was wonderful. Emju communicated everything kindly and clearly. The property is beautiful and we had a great time kayaking on the lake. Keep in mind there is very little cell service!
We enjoyed our stay very much. It seemed like all 7 of us had a private room or area that was just right for each of us. The kitchen is not spacious, but was adequate. The outside setting was wonderful, especially the walk path to lake Superior, which had solar lights to light it at night. It was also nice to have 2 bathrooms.
Charming space, great for multiple family’s or groups. Fantastic location on Lake Superior and minutes from Porcupine Mountain State Park ❤️ Looking forward to visiting again!
Spacious and beautiful cabin easily sleeping 6 adults. Short walk down to a private lake front on superior with a wonderful view and fire pit. Super close to a state park and other local beaches, would highly recommend.
Took a group of guys up North for a Winter Getaway. The house is perfect for a large group. Kitchen is nicely appointed and labeled. The driveway was plowed and ready for our arrival. Communication was excellent with the owner. Overall, a great experience.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Hermitage home. The location, views and home was absolutely perfect for our family. We made a couple campfires by the lake, kayaked and used the sauna several times. The Hermitage is such a unique location and is such a peaceful setting for anyone. We hope to be back sometime with our family.

Wonderful guests, so grateful they stayed at our home. 🙏
House is conveniently located to lake of the clouds, hiking, waterfalls and sandy beaches. Kitchen well equipped. Well stocked with paper products, lots of sleeping quarters and spacious gathering room. We had a great vacation.
This Lake Superior cabin was fully stocked and had plenty of room for our family of 6. Close to our desired location of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park for hiking. Enjoyed being able to watch the sunset on our own private area of Lake Superior. The sauna was a plus after hiking!
of Lake Superior.
The house and property were great. Lots of outdoor spaces & seating by the lake too. We were lucky that we had all sunny days and it being in early June we liked the cooler weather also. We hiked the porcupine mountains, visited local beaches & had Pasties in Houlton. view a couple of waterfalls up close. And all the drives were very scenic too.
Beautiful location, this cannot be emphasized enough! You get your own little piece of private shore on the Gitchegumee ~100 yards from the cabin! Also - and I can't emphasize this enough either - Emju was SO welcoming and communicative throughout! Not too much at all, just enough! We were all very happy!!!
We only wish we could have stayed longer. The home is absolutely beautiful and welcoming. It truly felt like we were treating ourselves to a true getaway, with the added luxury of having the most thoughtful and truly accommodating touches at hand. We arrived and left wishing that someday we could have something just like it…or be able to find more available dates to stay! Honestly, we can’t say enough about how attentive and kind our host, Emju was or how wonderful the stay was.
I got the Rona and couldn’t go on the trip. My friends loved the place though! The property manager was super responsive, helpful, and thoughtful. Thanks! Will definitely be looking to book this spot again.
Clean, well organized and had everything we needed. Didnt even realize there were bikes, kayaks and a horseshoe pit! The property was beautiful, we came up in late June and the bugs werent terrible depending on where you stood. The sauna was a great way to relax at night after hiking, and lots of fireflies on the road.
Very well located, we visited a dozen places and the furthest was presque isle at 30 min.
The host was great, very responsive and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommended!

About the host
Hosted by Emju Hillary
We are monks & students of the Detroit Zen Center, and live here half the year. The other half we live & teach meditation in Detroit. Our Abbot is 81 years old, of Finnish heritage, so living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan half the year is just perfect for him (the traditional Finnish sauna helps, too!). Many students & friends of our Zen Center retreat here, and we welcome guests to enjoy it other times, which helps with operating expenses. We appreciate the land and the area immensely up here, and are happy to share it with like-minded folks.
Why they chose this property
The land is just beautiful, the location ideal, and Lake Superior is the most powerful force we have met. Here, in the wilderness, nature is in charge, and is a perfect setting to relax, recharge & reconnect with the miracle of life. Our location is ideal, and is whey we chose this place for our retreat center after looking for years.
What makes this property unique
The woodstoves & wood-fired sauna are very special, as is the land itself and the openness of the space. Many people can be here without being right on top of one another, which is a great feature.
