Tamarack House is a cozy, family friendly house on private Lake Superior lot in Hovland, 20 minutes past the amazing town of Grand Marais. The house offers two inviting, comfortable bedrooms upstairs with king and queen beds, one with a designated work space. The downstairs provides a rec room, queen bed and twin over full bunk beds. The upstairs living and dining open to full Lake Superior views - relax and take it all in. An electric sauna was added summer of 2025 and there is no better way to experience the benefits of the "Nordic Cycle" than the crisp north shore air, Lake Superior and a sauna. The owners enjoy spending time here with their kids and dog and hope you do the same.
The house provides a wonderful place to relax & take in the big lake, or can be a good base for exploring inland hikes and canoeing - ideally a bit of both! It is equipped with board games & puzzles, art supplies for kids, books for adults & kids & two TVs with Roku’s for access to streaming services. Outside your door there is a beach for all your stone throwing needs. A fire pit is nestled along the shore to take in sunsets and enjoy the scenery. Adequate firewood is provided.
The Arrowhead Trail, which has access to pristine inland lakes is just a couple miles down Hwy 61. Bring your canoe, kayak or fishing boat and go explore! Judge C. Magney State Park is known for the Devils Kettle hike, and farther up Hwy 61 is High Falls, just before the Canadian border. The house is also just 20 min from Grand Marais which is home to an unbeatable harbor, an amazing art community & numerous local shops & restaurants worth checking out.
Two things to note incase they are a must for your party - there is no dishwasher, and drinking / cooking water is provided in a 13 gallon container in the kitchen as well as more downstairs if needed. This is due to the lake draw well the house uses. Running water can be used for showering or doing dishes but can appear slightly yellow/brown due to sediment from the lake.

Great place to base out of when adventuring around Northern MN. Quick access to Grand Marais, Superior Hiking trail, lakes.. wonderfully private lake shore with fire pit. Would recommend.
Lovely quiet property with the gentle lapping of Lake Superior just outside the door. Very quiet area, perfect location for hiking, shopping, and relaxing!

Wonderful to have a fire pit right by the water. Great view of the lake from windows as well was a huge benefit. Lots of space
We so enjoyed our stay at Tamarack House. It is a great location for the activities we want to do in the area. The beds are very comfortable and the kitchen, dining ,living area is great for eating and relaxing. We love being right by Lake Superior and having campfires at night. Being able to bring our dogs is greatly appreciated. We hope to stay here again in the future.
Beautiful property on shores of Lake Superior! Very clean, quiet and great location to many activities. We didn’t find ourselves needing anything during our stay, and furniture/beds very comfortable. Property host very responsive, and easy to check in/out. Special place if you are looking for a getaway from all the hustle and bustle.

Thank you so much Maria, glad you found us & would love to host your family/friends again. Cheers!
The property description is accurate. Late July on the north shore was hot & muggy & no lake breeze. Used lots of fans to cool off. Water use was also accurate in the description — while I had no issues with using the supplied water others in my group did. Did enjoy an afternoon in a screen tent listening to waves from the big lake
Home felt like just that, from the extra items in the cupboards to the condiments in the fridge, HOME away from home. Appreciated those things! Kleenex, extra blankets, etc were all there. For a true 'up north' stay!
Thank you!
Excellent place that offers relaxing sounds and artistic neighbors we are enchanted. Not far away from Grand Portage gems and the Canadian border this was what everyone needed for a weekend getaway. Best part was our cell phones did not work which gave us more time to bond and have meaningful conversations.
Awesome place to stay for a girl's hiking trip. The water was a tad inconvenient at first, but we figured it out and all was great! The fire pit is right next to the water and the house is right next to the firepit. So convenient! The views from the house were magnificient. It is right on the lake.... and very close to the SHT trails. So convenient and so nice!
The house is super cozy and made our 9 person group feel at home. The water situation was manageable but a bit more work though the owner was very clear about this in the description. We absolutely loved our stay but the 1 bathroom was a bit of a challenge. Would also recommend replacing the front door as its not square and the gaps let in mosquitoes. That constructive criticism aside, we'll be back!
Very close to the lake and you can hear the waves crashing while sitting in the living room. The check in was simple and the house was as expected. Plenty of room if you wanted to bring family or friends or just as nice for a couple and their dog.
House was neat and lots of games and activities to do while in the house. Great location to enjoy the lake with a full moon that makes awesome pictures. The wildlife is amazing to view.
Pros: close to Lake, beautiful view, cozy relaxing house, easy access, and plenty of wildlife.
Cons: lot of shops are closed this time of year and others have short hours.

We’re glad you enjoyed your stay Darrian. It’s certainly true about the shops, part of how the businesses stay alive in the winter. Part of it is also owners taking needed breaks after crazy summers. Thanks again for staying with us!
We had a great stay on the North Shore. Close to Grand Marais, as well as the Canadian Border, so choose your own adventure. Our boys fished off the lighthouse point in GM, and we did a hike up at Grand Portage on the border. Spent tons of time on the lakefront, and watched the younger kids climb all over everything while collecting more rocks to bring home.
The absolute highlight, from a Minneapolis family, was the stargazing! No Northern Lights, but wow! What an amazing view of our corner of the galaxy.
We'll be back, for sure!

It was a nice little cabin and on the lake which was perfect. The only disappointment was that there wasn’t a notice online that showering wasn’t recommended. It mentioned that water shouldn’t be cooked with, maybe I should’ve connected the dots. But I would’ve come more prepared had I of known

Hi Sophi - This is a misunderstanding, I'm sorry and wish you had reached out. Showering is fine to do at the house. It's just not recommended to drink the tap water because it's a lake draw well. Thank you for visiting and hope otherwise you had a good time! Michelle
Three of us spent a terrific long weekend at this property. During the daylight hours we were exploring Cook county especially interesting birds. At night the lullaby of Lake Superior waves made sleep easy
Very pleased with the property
We all enjoyed our stay.
Everything we could ask for.
Listening to the waves hitting the shoreline is very soothing!!!
