The small village of Arès is located north of the Arcachon Basin, between Andernos and Lège Cap Ferret.
Its small oyster-farming village with white and blue huts is typical of the basin. It marks the beginning of the Prés Salés, a marshy area at the bottom of the basin where you can enjoy walking, hiking, or observing the local flora and fauna.
Following the coastal path along the basin, you will reach Andernos via the Quinconces nature reserve.
Next to Arès, you will find Andernos les Bains. Andernos les Bains is a town with over 12,000 inhabitants, with a movie theater, an indoor public swimming pool, and a skate park. 1 City stadium, several children's playgrounds, a climbing gym, laser tag... You can stroll along the pedestrian street to shop, eat ice cream or a crepe, walk along the pier (the longest in France, offering a unique view of the basin, the Tchanquées huts, the bird island, etc.) or eat oysters at one of the many tasting spots in the port.
Not to mention the Domaine de Certes (Audenge), the Teich bird sanctuary, Aqualand (Gujan Mestas), Parc de la Coccinelle, and Kid Parc Gujan Mestras.
One hour south, you can't visit the bay without stopping in Arcachon and the winter town, then climbing the Dune du Pilat.
Thirty minutes to the north, you can visit the Cap Ferret peninsula, its ten villages, its oyster ports, the Cap Ferret lighthouse, the panoramic view from the tip of Cap Ferret, Frédhélian ice cream, the Bélisaire jetty, the little train, and more.
The vast network of cycle paths in the Gironde allows you to cycle around the basin, reach the ocean beaches, Cap Ferret or even Arcachon for the more motivated.
UBA sea shuttles connect Andernos to Arcachon and Cap Ferret to Arcachon.
The Passe Marée also allows you to reach Arcachon by sea, even at low tide, but it also offers trips around the basin, departing from Andernos.
On the basin side, you will find a multitude of small beaches between Arès and Andernos, but you will have to wait for high tide to for swimming, except at Lac de Saint Brice (Arès), a small reservoir in the basin where you can swim regardless of the tide.
With children, you will love Betey beach (Andernos), where you can enjoy a children's playground right on the beach, enjoy ice cream, crepes, and more at the small beach snack bar, picnic in the shade of the pine trees, and swim at high tide.
On the Atlantic Ocean side, Grand Crohot beach is the closest ocean beach to Andernos (about 15 minutes by car), but you will find a multitude of beaches of varying popularity and accessibility along the kilometers of coastline offered by the Atlantic Ocean.
