About this property
Sula Mountain Retreat with Hot Tub and Fun-filled Shop
The property is situated on the upper East Fork of the Bitterroot River. Mountains surround the area, the river is a few minute walk away, and wildlife is everywhere. While there are neighbors, it is a remote location. There is so much to do right outside the door and even more adventures with a little driving.
In the immediate area there is limitless fishing, hiking, backpacking, bike riding, ATV roads and trails, and in the winter, some of the best snowmobiling. The area is considered some of the best hunting in the world.
Using the property as a jumping off point you can drive to hot springs, skiing at Lost Trail, Camp Sula (food, drink and supplies), the great little town of Darby with most everything you might need. A day trip can take you to the Battle of Bighole National Park, the town of Wisdom, and the Jackson Hotsprings.
The two bedroom, one bath main cabin is idyllic with a rustic yet elegant feel both inside and out. The open floor plan downstairs provides a relaxing space for family and friends to cook and socialize.
The upstairs features two bedrooms and a lofted sleeping area with perfect cabin vibe for great sleeping and napping.
The cabin is stocked with a library of books, movies and games. While there is no cell service there is WiFi with limited streaming. The kitchen has everything you need for whipping up some awesome grub.
Outside there are old growth ponderosa pine and fir trees. Enjoy the hot tub for the always chilly mornings and evenings. There is a private courtyard with a fire area that is perfect for those evening fires and plenty of space to park a self-contained RV or camper.
Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and kept on the property. Please be considerate of others. Dog owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dog both inside and out. An additional nightly fee of $40 will be applied to guests bringing a dog. Limit of two dogs.
Finally, the shop area. It is a 24x48 shop that is full of fun. It includes a mini basketball court, a regulation height basketball hoop, a high quality ping-pong table, and a foosball table. It is perfect for the kids or as an open gathering space for the adults.
At a minimum, the main cabin sleeps six.

Trent was great. Was able to modify the stay without any difficulties. The cabin was very well taken care off with very detailed directions. All communication was up front and accessible. If we’re up this way again we’ll definitely be back.
Great, well equipped place with everything we needed and a few extra things. Although, we did not spend much time there, just sleeping, it provided a great place to stay.
Neat place, good communication from owner/manager, cool remote location, saw a wolverine on the drive! Would stay again, and recommend, in a heartbeat.
We really enjoyed our stay at this cozy cabin for a weekend of fun and skiing. The cabin was spacious, very well stocked, with plenty of beds. Lots of activities for children- books, games, movies, shop to play basketball and ping pong, hot tub. We had a great time and would definitely return for another visit.
Trent and Rachel's cabin had everything we needed for our family vacation. The place is very cozy with lots to do on the property. We appreciated the clean hot tub and linens. The area is very beautiful and off the beaten path so plan accordingly. We definitely would come back.
The location was fantastic and the property was well cared for. Our kids had a blast in the garage/shop - basketball, ping pong, etc. We loved being out of cell phone range for a few days!
Excellent, warm mountain cabin with all sorts of amenities and comforts. Very well equipped kitchen. Nice beds and bedding. The shower in the bathroom is very nice. Owner provided lots of firewood. I would definitely stay again for a hunting trip.
The house was perfect for our weekend away to enjoy some outdoor activities and reconnect. We were spoiled by the abundance of fishing spots near and around the location. Our favorite perks of the property were the hot tub and table tennis!
The house was clean, cozy and created a relaxing atmosphere for us to just relax.
If you look for a nice, clean, quiet place just to relax this is the perfect fit for you.
Everything was great. Enjoyed the time there very much and dealing with the host was a pleasure as well. I am not sure where the person giving a 1star review to this place stayed, but mustvhave been a different place. So definitely will be back

It was great getting to know you a little. Please bring the family with you!
This is our 2nd time at this cabin and it was another great stay. The cabin is perfect and my family of four loves it. The radiant floor heat was new this time and worked very well-never needed the wood stove. The Hot Tub was very nice after some long days of hiking. Ping pong, darts, and basketball in the shop is always a family favorite. We will be back again!
Had a wonderful time here! House was very homey with everything you would need from kitchen essentials to games and movies. We really enjoyed the game area in the shop where we spent lots of time playing basketball, ping pong, and darts. Check in process was seamless with great communication from our host. Area was perfect to unwind and relax. Tons of fishing nearby along with fun ATV trails. Cute little town of Darby is close by (about 40 minutes away) to get anything you need. Had a great time!
Such a great space! The kitchen is well appointed with everything we needed. We really enjoyed the ping pong table, basketball and cornhole. It was a great way to relax after a day of skiing. Easy to get fires going with all the kindling and wood right there and it warmed up quickly with the double barrel wood stove. We admired the book, VHS, DVD collection and lamented that we didn’t have more time to enjoy it all. Perfect spot! Thanks for the hospitality!
The property fit 6 women nicely with one person on her own sleeping pad. The hot tub and shower were very nice. Sofa not comfy. Pillows were a bit funky. One bathroom which worked for 6 of us. Beautiful drive to property from Sula. Lots of pots to cook with and lots of plates and cutlery. Big table to play games on.
Stayed at this property with 3 friends for a spring bear hunt. House and property was great, plenty of parking for all of us and the house had everything we needed. Plenty of space, amenities, cooking utensils, ect. Added bonus was the hot tub for a nice soak after a day of hiking the mountains. Though we did not bring a bear home, we did find some in the area, just couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. Wifi in the cabin worked great for facetime with the family. Overall a great place to stay, and a great host who reached out the day of check-in to see if we needed anything additional!

We began developing this property in 2005. We started with a small cabin and an outhouse. Over the years we added infracstructure, built the main cabin, and later the shop. We hired local contractors to help us but we designed and built the structures from the bottom of up with our own four hands!
In building the main cabin, we focused on a balance of affordabilty and efficiency. In the winter, the woodstove keeps the cabin nice and warm and in the summer, AC is not even needed. If it is in the 90s, we might use a fan at night. A big part of the efficiency is the 12 inches of insulation in the ceiling and an insulated mono-slab on which the cabin is built. To put it in perspective, many people in the area burn 10-12 cords of wood (that is a lot of wood--like, a full-size pick up loaded and stacked four feet high, 10-12 times). We burned 2-3 cords per year and we were always very comfortable.
For seven years we raised out children here. It was an idyllic situation where we learned a lot about living in a wilderness area and learning to enjoy the winters which are distinctly different than even seven miles down the East Fork Road. It truly is a winter wonderland.
As our kids got older and more involved in sports and music, the distance to the bus stop (14 miles) and to school (around 35 miles) started to be more and more challenging. We decided life would be a lot easier if we had a place in town. Life has been easier, but we are fortunated to be able to keep this property that will forever be what our kids consider home.
On the property you will see some remnants of our lifestyle. We raised chickens and pigs for a while (to be clear, there are not chicken and pigs on the property now) and purchases and used a sawmill to produce some of our building materials. Living a life where we were more dependent on ourselves was highly rewarding and, someday, we might be able to it all again.
We love to share out story. Just ask if you would like more details.
Why they chose this property
The property can best be described as, "cozy." "Rustic" also fits but that implies that maybe is is not super nice. Everything looks rustic, but everything is super nice and some might even say, elegant.
The shop is probably what makes the property the most unique vacational rental around. You can just hang out in their and enjoy the wide open space. Or, you and your family can enjoy a game of ping-pong or basketball. For the kids, the mini, full court basket court is about the coolest thing ever. We've burned off a lot of meals playing family basketball games. If you are a couple, maybe you haven't shot hoops in years. Give it a try on the shortened hoops or on that full size hoop (it seems taller, but it is regulation height). It really is a fun to way to excersize.
