About this property
Antique Farmhouse Totally Restored
This rambling farmhouse has a balanced mix of meticulous restoration with an eccentric flair. Undermountain Farm is a home carefully designed with warmth and spirit. It also has a unique collection of fascinating antiques and collectibles.
Enjoy cooking in the state-of-the-art kitchen, your only dilemma being where to eat. You can choose the solarium, surrounded by exotic plants and the sun streaming through the glass, or the patio, where you might hear the roar of the waterfall which tumbles down the mountain behind the house after a rainfall. Or you could try the formal dining room which still has the original Dutch oven from the 18th century. The veranda is a good choice for afternoon tea and a view of the Highland Cattle in the meadows. Yet another option is the informal breakfast/farm table on the stone floor near the entrance to the house. Lastly, there are the two stool chairs at the eat-in kitchen counter with a view of the luminous kitchen delicately accented with orchids. The hand-crafted cabinetry in the kitchen was all made from one maple tree from the property. We recently had a large dinner party for forty people in the breakfast sitting room after we removed the couch and chairs. Tis was the very max I would like to say. With all the downstairs rooms we were able to have hors d'oeuvres in the dinning room, a bar in the green house, and dancing, complete with a disco ball, in the stable.
Suffice it to say, this farmhouse has many rooms to enjoy. If you like a large space, then the former stables might suit you with its high vaulted ceilings and original beams it boasts a magnificent stone fireplace and huge windows that offer a pastoral view of the surrounding meadows. If you prefer a cosy room, then the den is ideal with its antique wood paneling and big comfy leather chairs. Its soothing, ambient feeling will make you want to curl up with a good book in front of the wood stove and forget about the outside world. The formal living or 'sitting' room has views of the big willow tree and a telescope to view the night sky. The informal living area adjoining the kitchen is an easy and friendly gathering place. Our home has three fireplaces and two wood stoves to keep you warm, and there’s also a fire cauldron and grill on the back stone patio.
If you’re staying with friends, you will have to draw straws for the huge master bedroom where the rising sun illuminates the artfully plastered walls creating a deep, orange, radiant light in the morning. Besides the beautiful tinted plaster, the added bonus in the master bathroom is the shower and its floor of river stones, and the jacuzzi where you can gaze over the meadows to the grazing Highland Cows. Those who drew the shorter straws will be happy in the other three bedrooms which have lovely outlooks over the Berkshire Hills and offer a quiet respite for a restful sleep; including the soothing sounds of a seasonal babbling brook. Two of these rooms are also upstairs and share a full bath. The last is on the main floor and is directly next to the downstairs full bath. All beds are Queen size except the downstairs which is an antique frame and special mattress bigger than a Double, but just shy of a Queen. In addition, both convertible sofas are Queen size. We have three single couches which can be utilized.
Walking, hiking, and cross country skiing abound and can start right from the back door. As Nature Conservancy land abuts the house there are no visible neighbors, and so lots of privacy. Up at the top of the ridge next to Bear Rock Falls is the Appalachian Trail - just behind the house!
A unique House, all hand-plastered, with a long history, old foundations on the property, a midden. A simple, and calming stay, gentle Highland Cows and Belted Galloways included...
