About this property
Hulili Tropical Fruit Farm- With over 200 five star reviews!
*If your dates aren't available, please check out our new listing #1355789 or our new Treehouse listing #4108089* Opened for guests in 2010, the original HULILI FARM COTTAGE (pronounced who-lee-lee) has welcomed so many wonderful guests that it became time to enable more people to enjoy the farm. Please check out our Pineapple Cottage listing (#1355789) to see which cottage best suits your needs. Guests rave about the 'SWEEPING, UNSPOILED, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY VIEW' in every direction! The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the fruit...that's when it is best! The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and furnished with all you will need. The 'BAMBOO SLEEPING CHAMBER' offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Laundry facilities, with all supplies, are available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage. A huge AVOCADO tree hugs the patio next to the lanai. We have named her, MS. CADDO. You may taste her fruits in season and almost always there will be a stalk of 'apple' bananas hanging from her branches. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in. We encourage you to take the time to read our GUEST COMMENTS. They paint a true picture of their stay at Hulili Farm. Here is seclusion, peace and quiet on a tropical farm 'paradise'. The ultimate guidebook: 'HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND REVEALED' is in the cottage for your use while exploring.
While most guests come to the farm to get away from their busy lives, for those who still want to maintain some connection, we have recently updated our internet and now offer fiber-internet on the farm. But we won’t tell your boss that!
Have fun! Our Aloha, Todd and Madeleine

Thank you! We hope we can welcome you back one day!
The location provided a spectacular view beyong the green pasture and trees out to the Pacific Ocean and passiing vessels. It was quiet, the unit was well appointed, and the hosts were attentive and welcoming without ever being intrusive.

Thank you so much! We love it when guests take time to enjoy the view! Safe travels!
Madeleine was a superb host, very responsive and friendly. Hululi Farm is a special place, calm and peaceful. The lanai with its spectacular views was our favorite.
The hosts are great and the accommodations are truly amazing! If you like staying off the beaten path then this is for you. Private, well maintained, central to roads for travel around the island, and numerous fresh, fantastic tasting organic fruit:). Thus is my second time staying and would most certainly return if Hawaii calls again.
We could have sat in the rocking chairs on the lanai and watched the changing of the view and the birds the entire time we were in Hawai'i and there would not have been a single wasted minute. Of course, we ran all over the island, always happy to return home to this cozy and comfortable farm 'cottage'. Everything was clean and in good working order -- and since I know you're wondering, the WiFi was excellent -- with a smart TV in the living room and the bedroom, as well as a collection of DVDs. We had daily visits from the farm chickens who occasionally left us a fresh egg. The farm is close to a number of wonderfully scenic places -- like Akaka Falls and the (walking) road down into the valley/beach past the old sugar mill just a few minutes away across the highway. Hilo also has a lot of good restaurants, shops and farmers/craft markets, as well as swimming beaches like Carlsmith Park. The hosts have a very helpful and brief book they put together pointing toward area attractions, in addition to having an excellent full-island guidebook in the cottage.

Thank you so much! We’re so pleased that the rockers, and the farm, were enjoyed!
Everything was amazing! Ginger cottage was adorable and perfect for our family of 4, everyone was extremely kind and it was wonderful to be able to rome around the property. My 4 yr old loved runing down to the longan orchard everyday to eat until he was sticky. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place or kinder hosts!

Thank you so much! It’s always fun to introduce kids to a new fruit!
This was one of the best places we’ve stayed at. Madeline is an amazing host but really if you’re looking for a quiet, beautiful place to enjoy, this is the place. Views in the morning were spectacular. Unbelievably quiet (minus the frogs). Make sure to follow the directions provided and you’ll have no hard time finding the place. If we ever make it back to the big island we will definitely be staying there again!! Thank you Madeline and family for the great stay!

You’re too kind! Thank you so much! We sincerely do hope you make it back.
This was a great place to stay to enjoy the Hilo side of the Big Island. Sitting on the patio enjoying morning coffee or an evening meal were the favorite moments of our stay. The owners are kind and giving hosts and proud to share the bounties of their farm.

Thank you so much! We're delighted you enjoyed the farm and got to taste some of the lychee too!
Quiet, end of the road, fruit farm. Most of the time you could only hear birds and frogs. Occasionally there was some farm equipment noise and mowing. Very safe. Owners live behind and there are other cottages on the property, but it is all arranged so you feel like you are the only one there. Easy drive to many things to see. Clean and comfortable. Friendly owners respected my privacy.

What a beautiful location and farm. So peaceful and a fantastic place to decompress. Matter of fact we spent a very enjoyable day on the lanai. The cottage had all the amenities we needed, a real kitchen, the bed was very comfortable, there’s a washer and dryer there, as well as snorkeling and beach gear available for use! We highly recommend this place and would stay again 3 easy check in/out, nice hosts. Farm is about 30 minutes from Hilo.

Thank you! A day on the lanai is the perfect way to relax between sight seeing! Thank you!
Oh my goodness, what a slice of heaven this place is! Hospitable and gracious owners, well appointed and meticulously kept cottage. We had a great stay!
Hulili farm was a perfect home base during our week-long visit to the big island. We enjoyed the super-comfy bed in the ginger cottage - gorgeous grounds and peaceful ocean view. Bonus - fresh avocados from the tree right outside the cottage! The farm location on the rainforest eastern side of the island worked well for us - a 30 min drive to Hilo, and hour to Volcano National park, and one hour to the Mauna Kea visitor center.

You were so lucky to time it with those huge delicious avocados! We just picked the last of them. Thanks so much for your review!
Off the beaten path but able to readily access the sites of Hilo, Volcanoes NP, Puna and the Hamakua Coast. If you want to enjoy a little bit of rural Hawaii, this is a great place to stay.

About the host
Hosted by Madeleine Loewen
Todd and Madeleine Loewen are the caretakers and cottage keepers here at Hulili. A full time farm, Hulili grows tropical fruits called longan (lawn-gone) and lychee (lie-chee) on a large scale, however there are also many other fruits that grow on the farm throughout the year. There are appx. 8 acres in orchard. The remaining acreage holds house, barn, cottage and an enormous 'front yard'.
Why they chose this property
We were delighted with the 'end of the road' location, and the undeveloped, unspoiled view of the ocean and surrounding country. The 500 foot elevation means better view and pleasant breezes. The land has a gentle slope toward the orchards and ocean. The surrounding open spaces land makes it seem as if we are on hundreds of acres.
What makes this property unique
There is the feeling of being the only people on the island. With such privacy and space, we enjoy outside living morning to night! Mornings on the lanai as you watch the sunrise over the Pacific are incredible, as are the evening sunset colors and moonrise. We have less rain than Hilo and enjoy tropical trade winds that keep us cooler in the summer than in town. Beautiful awe-inspiring location and a short drive from all that the Big Island has to offer, make for a perfect vacation!
