About this property

1886 Charming Cassat Cottage in Cape Charles, VA

The Captain's Cottage was originally built in 1886 and has recently undergone extensive renovations to create a home of charm, history, and comfort. Located a block away from Cape Charles's Central Park, four blocks from the beach, and two blocks from Mason Avenue, the Captain's Cottage is in a prime location in Cape Charles.

The Captain’s Cottage is a historic cassat cottage consisting of four bedrooms and two full baths. There are six beds to comfortably sleep up to nine guests total. The Mermaid bedroom has a queen-size bed; the Seahorse bedroom has a full-size bed; the Nautical bedroom has a twin-size bed and a twin-day bed trundle; the Captain’s Quarters bedroom has a king-size bed as well as its own private balcony. Each bedroom also has its own TV available for streaming and ample bedroom storage during your stay. There is a full bathroom on each floor. The downstairs bathroom features a relaxing soaking tub and a double-headed shower. The upstairs bathroom has a standing shower and a brand new single vanity with storage. Towels, shower essentials, and a hairdryer will be provided during your stay.

Downstairs there are two living spaces to gather, stream your favorite shows and movies, and relax. Off the living spaces, there is a small sitting room that features a built-in cabinet bar to enjoy a drink with friends and family. The bar will be equipped with a cocktail maker set, glasses, and an ice bucket. From the sitting room, you will find the beautiful eat-in kitchen outfitted with brand new stainless steel appliances, quartz and marble countertops, and a kitchen island with two barstools. The farmhouse table was originally from an estate sale on the Eastern Shore. The kitchen has all your essentials including a Keurig, french press, hot water kettle, toaster, pots, pans, utensils, spices, plates, and drinkware. Off the kitchen, there is a mudroom that has a washer and dryer, and beach essentials including beach towels, beach chairs, and a wagon.

In the fenced-in backyard, there is a beautiful new patio, dining, fireplace, and grill all under the outdoor cafe lights. The outdoor dining table was handmade by a local craftsman. Off the back patio, there is an outdoor shower to rinse off after visiting the beach. The front of the house has a wrap-around front porch with comfortable seating and a swing to enjoy coffee or tea in the morning.

The Captain’s Cottage is centrally-located and ready to host your next stay in the small beach town of Cape Charles, VA.

Parking is available in the back driveway behind the home. The driveway may fit 1-2 cars and/or a golf cart rental. There is a plug on the side of the shed to charge golf cart batteries. There is also free street parking in front of the home.

During the off-season (October-April), the Captain's Cottage offers discounted stays when you book for 28 nights or more - perfect for remote workers, travel nurses, or anyone looking for a relaxing extended stay on the Eastern Shore!

Perfect in Cape Charles
We stayed with our two children and their spouses and their three grandchildren. It was the perfect house!! Very well appointed with all the things you would need. Lots of extras (beach chairs wagon, lots of beach towels and lots). Great porch and wonderful backyard area.

Cozy Captain’s Cottage
The house was beautiful inside and out. We really appreciated all the little extras like towels, chairs, toiletries and kitchen basics. The beds were the most comfortable and every room was thoughtfully decorated. We loved our long weekend at Cape Charles!

Not Recommended for Kids
Overall, the house was fine and in a great location. We liked that it was close to the neighborhood park. I am not sure I'd consider it walkable (especially for older adults), but we rented a golf cart so it was fine. We were quickly disappointed that none of the bedrooms had curtains, just cheap vinyl blinds, and it was BRIGHT (not good for adults or kids!). For the price of the listing, there should have been blackout shades. We had to unplug the patio lights because they stayed on after 11 p.m.. Between that and no curtains, it was like daylight in our rooms. We ended up hanging towels over the windows. The house overall was quite cute (would love to see nautical decor in the master, though!). I also appreciated supplies like toilet paper, paper towels, and lots of towels. There was no salt though, so make sure to bring your own! We were really looking forward to the outdoor area and the upper deck, but unfortunately the house was COVERED in thick spider webs, spider eggs and well, spiders, so we didn't spend much time outside. I did expect this area to be cleaner for the cost of the house. Hidden behind the sectional in the living room, there was a big spiderweb INSIDE the house - so that was not enjoyable leaning your head back to see a big spider! Overall, I think this is a nice place for adults as long as it gets some attention to cleaning and window coverings. I would not recommend this house for kids under 4.
