About this property

Quiet Retreat with Yard, Damariscotta River Views, and Dock Access!

Our calendar and pricing is current. Book with us today!

The Back Narrows Social Club is your Damariscotta river-view retreat for a sumptuous and relaxing mid-coast Maine vacation! This unique property was actually the town social club in the 1930’s! In the ’70’s it became a mainstay of the Boothbay YMCA before being divided into two residential apartments in the 1980’s.

The location is minutes to area attractions like the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, the Maine State Aquarium, and the Boothbay Harbor, yet the Social Club is removed from the bustle of tourist noise, allowing guests to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Our dock in the Damariscotta River is a short walk around a bend in the street and down a neighbor’s driveway. You will have access to launch your kayaks, tie up your boat, or just dip your toes in the water and watch for seals!

The kitchen is fully equipped, including specialty lobster and oyster utensils. There's plenty of seating and space for dining and relaxing after a day of fun. Outside you will find a grill downstairs, and you can enjoy the river view while dining on the upstairs deck.

The bedroom features a queen sized bed with a "green tea foam" mattress. The futon in the living room also folds out to a full sized bed.

The living room features a smart-TV, as well as some books and games for you to enjoy during your stay. Sorry, no cable.

Please note that this property is not air conditioned. Due to the mild summers, absence of a/c is common in the region. If it gets warm, you can get a good cross breeze by opening the windows. We also provide fans.

Need more space? Look for our listing of the larger downstairs unit. When rented by unrelated parties, the two units are completely private with separate entrances. Message us about booking the entire Social Club as a two-story unit for groups up to 10.

This listing is for the upstairs only.

Peaceful Maine getaway
The property is nicely situated on a hill overlooking a pretty cove with small boats moored here and there. The water is across the street down a hill and r here are a lot of trees between the house and the water so you can’t really see the water too well, unless you walk there. Access to the water is across the street and down a long private driveway; it is not on the property itself, but it’s not inconvenient to get to. The house was perfect for my partner and I to spend a week working on writing projects that we both have. It was in a quiet neighborhood, with only a random car driving by once in a while. We enjoyed sitting on the dock at the waters edge with folding chairs from the house deck furniture, a picnic and our laptops. It’s a very quiet body of water; no big power boats buzzing through so it’ll be peaceful if that’s what you want. You can rent a kayak and keep it there too. We had the upper floor of the house and there was another family staying on the ground floor. They kept to themselves and were hardly there and as we were working on our projects didn’t ever see them. Both units share a big gas grill in the yard that worked perfectly.

The perfect spot!
The Back Narrows Social Club was the perfect spot for our Boothbay Vacation! The location was serene with beautiful views of the River, yet we were within 10 minutes to the best Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor had to offer! My husband and I enjoyed coffee on the dock overlooking the River every morning while watching the seals play. It was a wonderful way to start the day before heading out on our daily adventures! Matthew was wonderfully responsive messaging us to check on our stay. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the unit was clean and welcoming. We will definitely be coming back!

Birdsong and Peace
This property is the perfect blend of close to everything (groceries, town, hiking, the water) yet far enough away to get away from it all and recharge. The surroundings are very natural and quiet, and a dock on the Damariscotta River is right across the road if you like to kayak. The interior is spacious with a very functional kitchen and all the dishes/cookware needed (we didn't use much, but it was there if we needed it). There is a deck outside which is perfect for sipping your coffee and watching the sun rise over the Damariscotta. The owner is very responsive to communication.

Though originally from Texas, we love spending time in Maine!

Why they chose this property

We chose Boothbay because of the good people, delicious food, beautiful surroundings, and the proximity to activities like the Maine State Aquarium and the Botanic Garden. We also appreciate historic structures, and this property is a marvelous adaptation of a structure with significance to the community for many decades.

What makes this property unique

We offer our guests complimentary passes to the YMCA for swimming, exercise, etc. Please ask us if you want recommendations for local attractions, car service, charter fishing, or where to get the best local oysters.
