Like many other places, John’s cabin has a story. It started as a family project just for fun. John had the idea of building us a cabin in the woods. It was going to be a small cabin, kind of like a man cave. Then, we got the opportunity to tear down an old house in French Lick which had nice solid boards as the skeleton. That’s when the cabin plans started to change. The small cabin now had a larger blueprint in John’s mind. As the old house was torn down, boards were salvaged and hundreds of old nails were removed. The unique foundation would be concrete-filled rigged tile, as the cabin would sit up off the ground. Later down the road, he planned to dig a basement under the structure and build on a laundry room off the back of the kitchen, but for now, this would be one level with a loft. Another blessing came when we were given the windows out of another old house that was being torn down. One of our sons built the cedar cabinets in shop class in high school. We cut trees from our property, took them to the Amish, and had them cut for the wall covering, along with the cedar floor. Everything started to come together nicely. Thanks to other family members and some friends, this cabin was a success. The building began and finished in the year 2010. Talk about proud, this family was proud.
For now, it was just a place to enjoy. Future plans were to retire here but God had other plans. He took John home in December of 2017, after a tragic accident. Our family had to adjust to life without him. But John’s cabin…….
We decided we had to keep it in good shape no matter what. Septic was installed and we found a wonderful renter for 4 years. When our renter moved, VRBO was our next thought. Why not let other people enjoy it and help keep it alive? And here we are, hoping you see the beauty in his cabin as we do. Not just the cozy, warm feeling, but the special story that built it.
Sincerely,
The Deel Family
