Quiet Ocean Front House Overlooking Penobscot Bay, Rocky Coast
This custom-built, family-owned house has been meticulously maintained since the 1970's for use by both the owners and vacation renters. Most of the windows and the spacious deck look out upon peaceful Penobscot Bay. The house is on a dead-end private street with very little traffic, surrounded by trees, flowers, nature and quiet. The coastline is rugged and rocky, the beautiful rocky shore for which Maine is famous. This is a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the tourist destinations of Coastal Route 1.
Yet, renters will find themselves only 10 minutes away from some of the best activities and sights Maine has to offer. The busy and quaint destinations of Rockland and Camden are only 10-30 minutes away. Owls Head Light, Birch Point State Park, The Farnsworth Museum, Camden Hills State Park, and many more classic Maine destinations are a short distance just down the road. Rockland boasts great restaurants, cafes, and shops. The Penobscot Bay is great for sea kayaking, sailing, boating, and swimming. There is a boat ramp less than 10 minutes away. Owls Head is a great destination for bicycling and beachcombing/shelling. Community tennis courts are only a 5 minute drive away. There is something for everyone!
The house has all the benefits of home, from the fully-equipped kitchen to offering pots for cooking your lobster feast - and cozy beds for all the youngsters. The living room is equipped with cable TV and wireless internet. On a cool fall evening, you will be treated to blazing foliage. In winter, you can cross country ski out the front door. No matter what time of year you visit or what you like to enjoy, you will feel right at home here!

For the third year this was a wonderful vacation spot. Close to town but away. Love sitting on deck with coffee and a good book. I cannot ask for more. Thank you.
Hope to return next year.
A delightful home located on the shore of Penobscott Bay. The home possesses all that one needs for a two week stay on the mid-coast of Maine. Sunrises and sunsets were absolutely beautiful; and the home is well-situated for short trips to nearby towns and attractions.
Bedroom, bath and four beds in a separate room with a master bedroom and bath on the first floor on a very quiet deadend street on the water. Manager lives a few blocks away.and.is very helpful. Reasonable.price for what you get. Highest recommendation!
The view is to die for. Spent a lot of time sitting on the back porch just looking out on Penobscot Bay. The property was spotless. Comfortable and a great layout.
Terrific location. Did not want to leave. Loved it.
We had a wonderful time. This was our second time at this cottage. The view is excellent. The property is quiet. The kitchen is well equipped. We slept very well. I loved the flowers that welcomed us. We would stay jere again and can recommend this cottage to others.

Beautiful location and roomy house
The pictures are all very accurate. You can sit on the deck and hear the water lapping on to the rocks. We even saw a deer in the back yard.
The kitchen was well stocked with Cookware and utensils. Bedrooms were large and mattresses and pillows were very comfortable. Everything was very clean. A delightful 3 day stay and a place for future vacations.

Just a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the coast.
This was a great find. Beautiful location, just remote enough - yet a quick drive to restaurants, shops, and other sites. House well maintained with all the necessary amenities. Very comfortable place to relax and get away from the grind.

Great place
This is the 2nd time we stayed here. We really love the quiet location, the great view, cool salt water breeze, wild life, and the layout of the house. I also like the large fully equiped kitchen with oversized counters. It made cooking very enjoyable and there was plenty of counter space. This year we discovered an Osprey nest next door that we could see from the back deck. It was amazing to see the mother fly over the deck to bring back freshly caught fish from the ocean to feed her babies. One morning the deer were right in the back yard grazing. It is an amazing location right on the ocean.

Relaxing, peaceful and rejuvenating
This is our second year here. This visit was just as wonderful as last year. Close to town but away at the same time. Nothing better then watching deer in the morning with coffee. Thank you for a great experience.

Close to Everything
My family stayed at this large cottage on the water during the first week of May. The house itself was lovely and met all of our needs. The interior staircase leading to the second floor is a bit steep, but my elderly parents were able to navigate it. The yard was smaller than I can tell in the photos, but you have Birch Point State Park within ten minutes away and a whole host of locations around Rockland, Rockport, and Camden where the young ones can kick a ball and run around. The view was great. We were treated to a seeing a lobsterman make a run by the house. Although early in the year, we had great luck in finding places open. Every day we had a new place to explore and relax. Rockland, Rockport, Camden, Tenants Harbor (where I first came to Maine 35 years ago). The Coastal Children's Museum was a morning well spent for the kids. Cafe Miranda was a wonderful restaurant. Lighthouses. Hours spent tossing rocks. Relaxing, quiet dinners back at the house. It was a lovely time.

Loved it: Beautiful location, complete house rather than a cottage, lovely view, quiet, spacious
Over the past forty summers we have rented a dozen or so cottages on Spruce Head and Owls Head. This may be the best. The house (it is not a cottage as that term is usually used) is located fifteen minutes out of Rockland, five minutes from the Knox County airport with non-stop service to Boston, on the water with a nice view restricted by trees but a stunning 180 degree view of the Mussel (or Muscle) Ridge Channel and the islands down a short, albeit somewhat steep, path. It is toward the end of a very quiet, dead end, private road which, unlike most roads in Maine, is safe to walk. It faces south (on a map it's parallel to Birch Point State Park) and is shaded so it stays cool even during hot days and usually has a breeze which also keeps the mosquitos down. The house itself is remarkable--a bedroom and full bath on the first floor and two bedrooms (queen size bed in one and four single beds in the other) and another full bath on the second floor, very large kitchen and food preparation area, nice living room, pleasant deck (not screened), massive BBQ grill, big electric heater as well as a wood stove, full set of kitchen utensils (both a mixer and a Cuisinart), enough dishes for a party of twenty, washer and dryer, etc. Drawbacks:
the staircase to the second floor is very narrow, especially when you are carrying luggage, and while I applaud their decision to compost garbage, finding and operating the composter is something of a trial, especially at night.
It is owned by a family trust. Sue Hufnagel lives close by (during much of summer she is literally next door) and is extremely helpful. The rent is also reasonable by local standards.

Perfect for my family
We just got back from spending a week here and it was great so were going back again next year! The house is large with an open floor plan, huge functional kitchen with plenty of pots, pans, dishes, silverware, etc., large bedrooms, a rustic looking interior that was very clean and a fantastic view of the ocean. The ocean is right in the backyard with large rocks that my kids loved climbing on. During low tide my kids would go down to the rocks and hunt for treasures like sea glass. The house is secluded on a dead end street and the neighborhood is very quite and only 10 minutes from Rockland. No air conditioning required because there was always a nice cool breeze coming off of the water. We actually had to close some windows at night because it was so cool and it was early August. The house is fully functional with all the appliances needed including washer, dryer and dish washer. There was one flatscreen TV with cable, a DVD player, and a Roku player. We were able to log onto our Amazon and Netflix accounts during our stay. Cell service is spotty on the coast, and at the house, but the house has internet so I was able to use Wifi calling on my cellphone. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star rating is that the living room furniture could use an upgrade.

Peaceful waterfront Home and getaway
This well maintained home was very peaceful, and well situated for long leisurely walks on the coast or through the woods to pick wild raspberries. We loved our stay and ts views while being close to the town of Rockland. We felt secluded yet everything was accessible. Hope to return for many years to come.

About the host
Hosted by Steven Taylor
Steven is one of several family members who manage a family trust for this unique property. The property, which includes 2 homes, has been in their family since the 1940's, and the family feels a strong sense of stewardship. The family rents the newer house (built in the late 1970's) to help pay for the maintenance costs of the total property. They hope renters will show the kind of respect for the property and the landscape that their Grandparents taught them as children.
Why they chose this property
Our family has been spending summers on Owls Head since the 1940's. The houses on this property are part of our family heritage.
What makes this property unique
I most enjoy hearing the waves from my bedroom and skipping rocks from the beach. I love building a fire on the rocks and cooking clams in salt water. I love walking by rocks to the Birch Point State Park beach and back, and riding my bicycle with my kids to the Owls Head General Store for lunch.
