Beach Bird, Family-Friendly, 6+BR, 500' fr. beach, in-ground sports Pool, Gazebo
Beach Bird is located in the low-traffic, family-friendly North end of Sandbridge, 500' from the beach. We rent weekly from Saturday to Saturday during the peak summer months May to September. Check-in is 3 P.M. and check out is 10 A.M. We have a digital door lock, but we are almost always there since always seems a lot to do, making sure everything is working. We specialize on family and friend reunions and provide amenities for all ages including toddlers, with several cribs, a high chair, strollers. We also supply pool and beach toys. We have ping-pong in the rec room downstairs, and badminton and volleyball for the yard or pool, basketball for the driveway, and pickleball for the driveway or side yard. We have a 200 sq. ft. 2nd story deck in front and a 384 sq.ft 2nd story deck on the south side., with a 200 sq. ft. 3rd story deck for 2026. We have a 240 sq. ft. covered patio area in back, 200 sq. ft. of lounging deck with 8 chaise lounges in the rear with the 16' X 32' sports pool, which can be solar-heated. The second floor of the main house has a king master bedroom, great room with kitchen, dining room, and living room, and a queen bedroom with full size crib. Last year we upgraded to a large U shaped couch and a new dining set now seating 12. Along with the six bar stools we now seat 18. The first floor has king and queen bedrooms sharing a bath, a fifth bedroom with a double lower, twin upper bunk and with it's own full bath. the sixth bedroom has a queen bed. The fifth bedroom will also have another queen lower, double upper bed. Bedroom 6 has a queen bed. The rec room has a double futon and queen sofa bed for use with extra guests. The kitchen is fully equipped and many guests have told us it is the best equipped kitchen they have experienced. For example we have two coffee makers, one regular and one Keurig. The latest great suggestion came from our first week guests last year: the kitchen overhead light was pale and flickering, and they had converted their home to LED. Armed with this I went to Home Depot and lo and behold, they had direct replacement plug-in LED 4 foot bulbs. No more flickering fluorescents! We completely replaced the electrical panel, a big boost for safety. The pool connection got lost in the process so the past weeks have been crazy busy installing a new super-quiet pool pump and getting the pool ready. For the 2026 summer season we will have the new three story rear addition. There have been many hurdles, getting contractors to finish (and in one case do anything!). It will have a queen futon and bath on the first floor near the pool, a queen bedroom on the second floor with room for a crib, and another queen bedroom/office space on the third floor. Getting back the the outside, the path to the beach is right across from my driveway. You pass two houses to get to the beach road, then two houses right to the life-guarded beach, which I recommend in unsettled weather, or two houses left to a more private area of the beach, virtually empty during the week. Looking North you can see downtown Virginia Beach, about 5 miles, and to the South is 20 miles of beach all the way to the Outer Banks..The entire front yard is gravel so we have ample off-street parking, one of the few houses in SB. In walking distance is SB Market with an excellent deli and amazingly extensive stock and Sandbridge Seaside Restaurant which consistently makes the top ten lists for Best of the Beach. Across the street is a Ben and Jerry's, and Zero's Subs. Five miles south in SB is the SB fishing pier and tennis courts, with Baja Restaurant and jet ski rentals. A mile further is Back Bay Wildlife Refuge with miles of walking trails and guided tram tours several days a week. Spectacular bird life, especially in the Fall with large flocks of Snowy Geese and shorebirds over-wintering.. A half mile back on SB Road is SB Rentals which you passed on the way in, with surfboard, kayak, bike, and just about every household item for rent, as well as surfing lessons and guided kayak eco-tours.. Also on the way in on the left is Hell's Point Golf Club, one of the many public golf courses available in VB.

Loved the neighborhood. The house was big enough for 18 of us and we weren't running into each other all the time. It was very well stocked with things most places do not supply like laundry detergent, lots of towels etc. The pool was great we spent a lot of time playing pool volleyball. something for the entire family .

Thanks, Paul, was a pleasure having you and your great family. Welcome back anytime, contact me for special rate. We are doing a major addition/renovation so now can accommodate even larger families and friends.
Run down location in the midst of do-it-yourself renovation
Devastating to arrange meeting family from across the country only to discover the property in extremely run down and literally unsafe with do-it-yourself renovations going on in virtually every room. Originally listed as "9" bedrooms, however the third floor containing two bedrooms is far from habitation.

This is what happens when you don't cave in to demands for a $2000 rebate: a spiteful hate-filled review rife with falsehoods, despite getting the booking $3000 below market with a 6 day stay, 10% discount, and below market rate. There were no complaints day 1-day 6. On day 7, AFTER LEAVING, we received a complaint about wasp nests, a leaky faucet handle, and "two missing bedrooms", along with a demand for $2000. He had been informed a month before, as soon as we found out, that the third floor bedroom would not be available due to contractor malfeasance outside our control, giving him ample time to change venues. Despite my request he refused to provide the required documentation. It was only after the vicious review that I learned that the "two missing bedrooms" were on the third floor of the addition , which despite never having seen it, he decided was two bedrooms. The addition was 3 rooms in the rear of the house, yet in his mind he "found" "construction problems" throughout the original house and that the addition rooms were representative of the rest of the house. REALLY? The two main baths are tile and marble. The kitchen is tile with granite countertops. We added a new U-shaped couch and a new DR table and chairs now seating 12 this year. He claimed the first floor utility room was a kitchen; we removed the stove and cabinets and changed the designation two years ago when we started the addition. The main outside stairs have a 2x6 handrail and 4 sets of risers, not 3, with the outer two doubled and the middle two tripled. They were just inspected and passed by a structural engineer a month ago along with the decks. We also had the annual City safety inspection which also passed. I have backup for most systems including safety with extra fire extinguishers and fire blankets, and two independent fire alarm systems.
Grandma, kids and grandchildren (20 to 25) all had a great time. House was well equipped and large enough for all. Pool was wonderful after time on the beautiful beach.

Very disappointed to hear of these issues after the fact. My policy is to respond and fix problems immediately if at all possible. Not sure which mattress since none sink when I try them, but would have replaced anyway as per my policy. The policy with cleaning is also that any issues are addressed right away with the cleaners coming back if necessary. Will pass this along to cleaners who this year are retired military and have very high standards. Drove out to check 9/10, no mattress bowed much less "bowled", including bunk beds.
The house was large and very spacious. Loved that the downstairs had bathrooms and kitchenette. The kitchen was beautiful and fully equipped with more dishes/utensils and cooking pans, mixing bowls, etc. All the cooking pans were in excellent shape. Large spice collection. All appliances clean and in good condition. All rooms clean, beds very comfortable. Pool was great and loved the fact you couldn't access from inside house since we had small kids. Gate was child proof. Plenty of beach and pool items. Fully equipped for small children-crib, strollers, playpen, high chair. Owner was great. Checked on us several times. This will be our go to place in the future. Loved walking around neighborhood and short distance to ocean. Highly recommend it for families or large groups.
Our family had a great week stay at the house. Bernard was very helpful answering all of our questions before and during our stay. The rooms, kitchen and pool were clean. Only had a few minor problems with a few broken items and the rooms were slightly smaller than pictured. Otherwise it was a great, comfortable stay with everything we needed in good proximity to the beach!

Thanks so much for your great review, much appreciated. We emphasize from day one to call for any problems, our policy is to fix or replace any broken items, wish you had called, would have been happy to fix or replace. Still haven't found what was broken, subsequent guests made no mention of anything. Your comment on room size is very helpful since it is very hard to show on a photo. The rooms are actually quite large, so I need to either include a floor plan with dimensions or list the dimensions. Great suggestion. Thanks, Bernard
Family reunion from Maine, Arizona and Virginia Beach. There were 6 families, ages ranging from toddler to senior citizens. The location, ease in finding tne house, the pool, the beach and local attractions all made it a great place to stay. Bernard is an attentive and accomodating host. We all truly enjoyed ourselves.

House was well stocked. The homeowner was accessible and nice to work with. The house needs to be upgraded but it didn’t stop us all from having a great week. The pool and sitting area was clean and stocked with pool toys-a lot of special family memories made this week

Bernard was the best host! So communicative in a timely manner and offered so much information, both about the property and the area. The house is so well stocked in the kitchen and other areas (towels, pool floats, beach chairs, etc). Although some of the equipment etc is getting pretty old, it was still usable and very appreciated. We have a group of 10 and the space was accommodating and we had a great time. Would stay again and more than happy to deal with Bernard!

I must agree with the other reviews singing the praises of Bernard, the host. He could not have been more accommodating and eager to please. And the location was great - such an easy walk to a vast beach. Our group of 8 family members, including 3 kids, was in need of a place to go for a social distancing vacation and the large, uncrowded beach and the private pool at the house provided the perfect setup. We enjoyed the pool when it was shaded during the mornings and late afternoon and the beach in between. We found enough beach umbrellas and sand toys to keep everyone happy. The upstairs deck is a great place to read a book as it is shaded in the afternoon. Thank you Bernard for sharing Beach Bird with us!
Overall we had a wonderful time. The pool was very nice and there were plenty of outdoor toys. We never found the putting green that was mentioned.
I was not happy with the cleanliness of the kitchen. All of the cabinets needed a good scrubbing. Overall the place needed to be painted. I understand that the owner had contracted someone to work on an addition and the person never finished. We rented the place almost a year ahead and the owner probably should have made some accommodations for the fact that there was construction in process.

Key is guests having a good time; that is what all the hard work is about. All problems could have been easily fixed with communication. Putting greens were in storage shed. Any cleaning problems the cleaner returns as soon as notified and rectifies any problems. Most of walls are paneling but will certainly check more carefully on paint in some of first floor rooms. Thanks.

The house was very dirty, despite the previous reviews. On the surface, it appears better at first. Upon closer inspection, one sees the dirt, hair, spider webs, garbage, etc. The upstairs couch needs replacing. We found an enormous dead cockroach. We don't recommend this place as is.

I categorically dispute the tone and terms of this review. The terms used are pejorative and not descriptive or constructive. 1. My cleaners are retired military and meticulous. As anyone with military experience knows, their standards are extremely high (white glove) 2. I do a walk-through after each cleaning and did not find a single item mentioned. 3. I tell every guest on arrival to call me immediately for any issues so they can be promptly resolved. There were no calls. 4. I personally visit the house every mid-week to check the outside and pool; nothing was mentioned. 5. Any "giant cockroaches" are not cockroaches but palmetto bugs, also called water bugs. They do not seek food but water. The operative word was dead; pest control was working. The sectional couch with recliner and sofa-bed is in excellent shape and well shown in photos. J. Never again!
The house was not as it looked like in the advertised picture. The 4 bedrooms in the basement were dingy and had a musty odor all over. There was no ventilation in the bathrooms which made the basement more dingy. The garbage receptacles outside were filled with garbage that were never collected and were infested with flies. The cabana was rickety and filled with cobwebs (nothing at all what it looked like in the advertisement). The 3 grills in the backyard were rusty and looked like they haven’t been cleaned ... yukh! For the amount of money we paid, it could’ve been better. Five-star it definitely is NOT.

This totally dishonest troll review is expected after withholding part of deposit for cleaning, worst mess in 21 years, and first time ever held any deposit for cleaning. Changes from website were upgrades, extra bedrooms heavily used by this group who numbered in the upper 20's vs. lease 17. Both down baths have identical Broan vents. Need to flip switch to activate. Dingy and musty= troll words. Garbage complaint more trolling, collection date is Tuesday. I personally take enough home to leave room in both reg. and recycle bins. New cabana made with 4x4 posts and 2x6 rafters. No cobwebs. Grill #1 brand new this year, #2 one year old, #3 only used to store gas gauges and extra grill tools. Grills cleaned weekly. Re: mess left by this group. All countertops covered with rotting and perishable food, in turn covered with flies. Upstairs doors and windows left open on rainy day, probably to dilute smoke smell, two hours extra cleaning to remove. Dishwasher broken, filter loaded with food, plastic, labels, even twist tie. Soaking wet towels left on laminate floor with ceramic floor just 3 feet away. Downstairs toilet covered with feces. Cleaners showed me SECOND Swiffer mop cloth still black. Day after left bad smell developed, finally located coming from upstairs fridge area, crabmeat scraps and juice in refrigerator condensate tray, requiring removal rear plates to access and clean. Pool pump turned off without my knowledge or permission, required hours to clarify. The one statement in review with which I concur is Never Again. Thanks, J. B. du Buy

OPPORTUNITIES
OUR FAMILY HAD A GREAT TIME BUT THERE WERE SOME COMPLAINTS/OPPORTUNITIES WHICH I REVIEWED - ON SITE - WITH THE OWNER:
-OVERALL, THE HOUSE WAS NOT “RENTAL-READY”. The condition of the house and yard/patio was not what is shown in the VRBO pictures. I walked through the house and yard with the owner and suggested opportunities which he agreed were necessary. Opportunities to stop rain from leaking through air conditioning vents, remove non-smart TV’s that don’t sync to main circuit, up-grade children’s bunk beds, and providing professionally cleaned and installed linen ($200.00 up charge); Put sand in the beach volleyball pit - remove weeds; Basketball hoop and other advertised games also not in good condition - removal, or replacement would be a great opportunity. The living room was comfortable, but a new couch (without a plywood cushion) provides a significant opportunity. Lots of opportunities to increase attractiveness of the “gazebo” area too. This includes removal of old broken BBQ grill and other broken boards and old plastic furniture. He told me that he is in the process of fixing the air-conditioner support and making some of the other improvements that we discussed.
I understand from the owner that he did not have enough time to get the property in as ready a condition as usual, so I offered these suggestions. It may take some time to take advantage of these opportunities. I hope this report is helpful.

The most pertinent part of this review is the first six all caps words: "OUR FAMILY HAD A GREAT TIME". This refutes the rest of the all caps note. I completely dispute that the photos are not representative. I also have several factual corrections to the litany of complaints: 1. there was a small amount of water on the floor under an ac vent which also happened to be directly in front of a window. There was no moisture on or in the vent. AC vents are sealed and wrapped with insulation. There is no way rain can get into them. A partially open window, however.... 2. Non-smart TV's plural; only one was non-smart, as per my usual policy, I offered to replace that day, declined. 3. Bunk beds, again plural; only one had a loose bolt in one part which was secured with a safety tie. 4. Professional linen service and up-charge; it is clearly stated that linen package is an option. Bring your own, pay nothing. Or he could have ordered professional linen service. Sample prices: one towel set $9, beach towel $5, one king set $19, etc. Total with making beds as demanded =$492.. (We make kings and queens up and down, gratis. 5. I was not " in process of fixing AC support ", it was fine when I left prior Sat. Offered to fix 3 loose boards on spot, declined. 6. "I understand from owner": misunderstood. I focused on important items like reinforcing and partly rebuilding decks with stainless steel screws up and down, completely replacing salt water pool chlorinator control system; and servicing both heatpump/AC units. 7. "attractiveness of gazebo area": the spare third gas grill and furniture were in the back behind a tree and beside the storage shed. All "broken boards" were removed in trash months earlier. 8. Underscoring the nature and level of these complaints were the ones not mentioned in the review: a. several lightbulbs needed replacement. b. one of electric can openers was not working. c. four slice toaster one half not working. As per usual policy offered to replace that day, declined. d. Stain line at high water mark on pool liner. Note: all items declined fixed or replaced following Sat. taking minutes, not "some time". BOTTOM LINE; THEY HAD A GOOD TIME. Mission accomplished.
Prior emails with the owner led me to believe the addition would be finished. Overall appearance of the property inside and out was not as depicted as on website pictures. Dirty inside and out, Entire property was full of weeds, construction tacks found in the grass. Outside shower was disassembled and up against the fence along with other pieces of material. Extension cord coming out of the utility room window to power outside patio lights. Addition not finished. Utility room sink didn't work. All floors were sandy. Downstairs bedroom had no electricity or AC and gaping hole in the ceiling where ceiling tiles were missing. The owner agreed to fix this prior issue the next day which he did. This consisted of a wall AC unit plugged into an extension cord that ran under the door, outside the house and through the window of the utility room and plugged in the there. A lamp was plugged into the extension cord for light. The downstairs was very musty. The dehumidifier was emptied 3 times a day. Side rail of top bunkbed held together with rope. Missing woodwork, trim, and air vents. Baby gate at top of steps was secured to the railing with rope. Upstairs bedroom reduced in size due to the addition. Only 1 clothes closet in the entire 6 bedroom house located in MBR. This was so full of household items that you barely had any room for clothing. The owner did clean this out so we had more room. Downstairs bathroom hot water temperature was luke warm at best. Not a vacation.

I take issue with every item in this vindictive review. There is constructive criticism which we welcome and then there is blatant negativity as in this review. In our experience this usually occurs when demands for money are declined. This is what happened: my manager and I were confronted by some members of this group over unhappiness with BR 6. A refund of about 2/3 of the total was demanded or else. We offered a full refund if they left the house. Leaving was clearly declined by another person in the group. Specific items: 1. the house was clean, I took photos to document this. 2. The yard was recently weed-whacked. 3.The outside shower was replaced by the addition which will have a full inside bath convenient to the pool area. 4. Floors were freshly mopped after sweeping and vacuuming. 5. BR 6 had a new mini-split HVAC ceiling cassette, no "gaping hole". 6. Every bedroom has a closet; MBR has a walk-in closet. See the great review for the week prior to this review. The guests in the week following left a very nice personal thankyou note on the counter as well as a very nice note in the guest book. We work very hard and upgrade every year to make Beach Bird a wonderful vacation home and happy guests are our mission and goal.

We had fun!
Property could have been better maintained and updated a bit. Pool area was nice but needed to be weeded badly. All and all our family had fun
Nice location. Easy walk to beach. Beach is not crowded, which makes it nice for large families. Roomy house. Nice heated salt water pool and covered deck area at pool. Owner was very helpful and responded quickly when we had trouble with the refrigerator.
Eleven ladies enjoyed our multiple big birthday celebration at Beach Bird. The nearness of the beach and that pool made it perfect! Bernard was the best host, responding to our requests and questions. We recommend this beach house.

About the host
Hosted by J.Bernard du Buy
We took over management of Beach Bird in 2011 from an agency to better serve our guests. Thanks to Homeaway now VRBO, this was not as daunting as expected; it turns out everything is done online now anyway. We get to meet and know our guests and this has been very rewarding; there are some really great folks out there and providing them with a first class vacation has been a wonderful experience. When you have guests relaxing and having a good time it makes all the hard work worthwhile. We especially enjoy hosting family reunions and have worked to add to our amenities to accommodate all ages. We are working on bedroom and bed arrangements to be able to provide a comfortable stay for family and friend groups and be flexible depending on the mix of adults and kids. We have one of the larger pools in town and a number of patio sets on multiple decks. We have many wonderful interactions with guests and always encourage requests or suggestions. Over the years we have worked hard to provide trouble-free stays so have gradually gotten two of everything possible, two refrigerator-freezers, two microwaves, coffee makers, two gas grills. Many times we have responded to questions and suggestions from guests and drove down and purchased an item the same or next day. We are so busy each off-season that we have never had a chance to stay at Beach Bird, so that is another reason we appreciate guest suggestions.
Why they chose this property
For me Beach Bird was love at first sight; my real estate agent wanted to turn around and leave immediately. All the windows and doors were frosted and furnishings were pretty basic, but I liked the layout and location in the low-traffic North End. You would never guess now with the large pool and gazebo but the backyard was a bramble patch. But there were great views, and the owner had already installed solar hot water, so we already had a start on my goal of going solar. We now have a solar pool heater. Every off season we were busy remodeling starting with the doors and windows. Some day maybe I'll get to stay there a few days without working and see what it's like!
What makes this property unique
Over the years as Sandbridge has become busier I have come to appreciate the North End more and more. You can walk or bike ride without worrying about busy traffic, and crossing the street to the beach path is never an issue. The neighbors have been great and we have tried to be selective in having guests who like to relax and enjoy peace and quiet on their vacation. We have made the backyard pool area into an oasis where you can relax by the pool and keep and eye on the kids in comfortable reclining patio chairs out of the hot sun under the gazebo cooled by the ocean breeze. I'm sure that sounds like hype but we do actually get an afternoon rising convection sea breeze most afternoons. When I'm taking a break from the remodeling; it's my favorite spot. With the new decks on the addition we now have the original East-facing front deck and patio furniture and the new second floor 360 sq. ft. South facing deck with patio area, and the new 180 sq. ft. third story deck with ocean views. We plan to provide under deck water drainage so with the original Gazebo area, now doubled, we will double again with shaded rain-sheltered lounging and patio areas.
