About this property
Beach Bird, Family-Friendly, 6+BR, 500' fr. beach, in-ground sports Pool, Gazebo
Beach Bird is located in the low-traffic, family-friendly North end of Sandbridge, 500' from the beach. We rent weekly from Saturday to Saturday during the peak summer months May to September. Check-in is 3 P.M. and check out is 10 A.M. We have a digital door lock, but we are almost always there since always seems a lot to do, making sure everything is working. We specialize on family and friend reunions and provide amenities for all ages including toddlers, with several cribs, a high chair, strollers. We also supply pool and beach toys. We have ping-pong in the rec room downstairs, and badminton and volleyball for the yard or pool, basketball for the driveway, and pickleball for the driveway or side yard. We have a 200 sq. ft. 2nd story deck in front and a 384 sq.ft 2nd story deck on the south side., with a 200 sq. ft. 3rd story deck for 2026. We have a 240 sq. ft. covered patio area in back, 200 sq. ft. of lounging deck with 8 chaise lounges in the rear with the 16' X 32' sports pool, which can be solar-heated. The second floor of the main house has a king master bedroom, great room with kitchen, dining room, and living room, and the previously mentioned queen bedroom with full size crib. Last year we upgraded to a large U shaped couch and a new dining set now seating 12. Along with the six bar stools we now seat 18. The first floor has king and queen bedrooms sharing a bath, a fifth bedroom with a double lower, twin upper bunk and with it's own full bath. the sixth bedroom has a queen bed. The fifth bedroom will also have another queen lower, double upper bed. Bedroom 6 has a queen bed. The rec room has a double futon and queen sofa bed for use with extra guests. The kitchen is fully equipped and many guests have told us it is the best equipped kitchen they have experienced. For example we have two coffee makers, one regular and one Keurig. The latest great suggestion came from our first week guests last year: the kitchen overhead light was pale and flickering, and they had converted their home to LED. Armed with this I went to Home Depot and lo and behold, they had direct replacement plug-in LED 4 foot bulbs. No more flickering fluorescents! We completely replaced the electrical panel, a big boost for safety. The pool connection got lost in the process so the past weeks have been crazy busy installing a new super-quiet pool pump and getting the pool ready. We are continuing to work on the new three story rear addition. There have been many hurdles, getting contractors to finish (and in one case do anything!). It will have a queen futon and bath on the first floor near the pool, a queen bedroom on the second floor with room for a crib, and another queen bedroom/office space on the third floor. Getting back the the outside, the path to the beach is right across from my driveway. You pass two houses to get to the beach road, then two houses right to the life-guarded beach, which I recommend in unsettled weather, or two houses left to a more private area of the beach, virtually empty during the week. Looking North you can see downtown Virginia Beach, about 5 miles, and to the South is 20 miles of beach all the way to the Outer Banks..The entire front yard is gravel so we have ample off-street parking, one of the few houses in SB. In walking distance is SB Market with an excellent deli and amazingly extensive stock and Sandbridge Seaside Restaurant which consistently makes the top ten lists for Best of the Beach. Across the street is a Ben and Jerry's, and zero's Subs. Five miles south in SB is the SB fishing pier and tennis courts, with Baja Restaurant and jet ski rentals. A mile further is Back Bay Wildlife Refuge with miles of walking trails and guided tram tours several days a week. Spectacular bird life, especially in the Fall with large flocks of Snowy Geese and shorebirds over-wintering.. A half mile back on SB Road is SB Rentals which you passed on the way in, with surfboard, kayak, bike, and just about every household item for rent, as well as surfing lessons and guided kayak eco-tours.. Also on the way in on the left is Hell's Point Golf Club, one of the many public golf courses available in VB.

About the host
Hosted by J.Bernard du Buy

We took over management of Beach Bird in 2011 from an agency to better serve our guests. Thanks to Homeaway now VRBO, this was not as daunting as expected; it turns out everything is done online now anyway. We get to meet and know our guests and this has been very rewarding; there are some really great folks out there and providing them with a first class vacation has been a wonderful experience. When you have guests relaxing and having a good time it makes all the hard work worthwhile. We especially enjoy hosting family reunions and have worked to add to our amenities to accommodate all ages. We are working on bedroom and bed arrangements to be able to provide a comfortable stay for family and friend groups and be flexible depending on the mix of adults and kids. We have one of the larger pools in town and a number of patio sets on multiple decks. We have many wonderful interactions with guests and always encourage requests or suggestions. Over the years we have worked hard to provide trouble-free stays so have gradually gotten two of everything possible, two refrigerator-freezers, two microwaves, coffee makers, two gas grills. Many times we have responded to questions and suggestions from guests and drove down and purchased an item the same or next day. We are so busy each off-season that we have never had a chance to stay at Beach Bird, so that is another reason we appreciate guest suggestions.
Why they chose this property
For me Beach Bird was love at first sight; my real estate agent wanted to turn around and leave immediately. All the windows and doors were frosted and furnishings were pretty basic, but I liked the layout and location in the low-traffic North End. You would never guess now with the large pool and gazebo but the backyard was a bramble patch. But there were great views, and the owner had already installed solar hot water, so we already had a start on my goal of going solar. We now have a solar pool heater. Every off season we were busy remodeling starting with the doors and windows. Some day maybe I'll get to stay there a few days without working and see what it's like!
What makes this property unique
Over the years as Sandbridge has become busier I have come to appreciate the North End more and more. You can walk or bike ride without worrying about busy traffic, and crossing the street to the beach path is never an issue. The neighbors have been great and we have tried to be selective in having guests who like to relax and enjoy peace and quiet on their vacation. We have made the backyard pool area into an oasis where you can relax by the pool and keep and eye on the kids in comfortable reclining patio chairs out of the hot sun under the gazebo cooled by the ocean breeze. I'm sure that sounds like hype but we do actually get an afternoon rising convection sea breeze most afternoons. When I'm taking a break from the remodeling; it's my favorite spot. With the new decks on the addition we now have the original East-facing front deck and patio furniture and the new second floor 360 sq. ft. South facing deck with patio area, and the new 180 sq. ft. third story deck with ocean views. We plan to provide under deck water drainage so with the original Gazebo area, now doubled, we will double again with shaded rain-sheltered lounging and patio areas.
