About this property
Secluded Luxury on Greenbelt Canyon @ Barton Springs & Zilker Park Near Downtown
READ OUR REVIEWS … OUR GUESTS SAY IT BEST.
You’ll find this architecturally distinctive and art-filled Santa Fe-style home tucked under shady oaks on a cliff overlooking the Barton Creek greenbelt at the end of a quiet, secluded cul-de-sac in Central Austin minutes from downtown.
Located in Barton Hills, one of Austin's most desirable neighborhoods, the house is a mere 10-minute walk or 5-minute drive to the “soul of Austin” … the 1000 ft long natural Barton Springs Pool nestled in Zilker Metropolitan Park.
Zilker Park is 350 acres of natural beauty and the annual site of the world-famous Austin City Limits Music Festival, as well as other popular events such as Blues On The Green and musicals at Zilker Hillside Theatre. In the park and nearby you’ll also find Zilker Botanical Gardens, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, Zachary Scott Theatre, bike rentals, kayak/paddle board/canoe rentals, and convenient and tasty “Restaurant Row” on Barton Springs Road.
Upon arrival at our home, you’ll enter antique Mexican doors into a large, bright, colorful open living space overlooking the comfortable patio and gorgeous Barton Creek greenbelt.
You’ll see a collection of vibrant paintings, a big hand-painted and carved Hong Kong screen in the dining room, a colorful stemware rack over the bar, interesting furniture designs, minerals, glassworks and many other eye-catching articles. A very nice Yamaha piano also awaits if you’re musically inclined.
Expansive glass walls and sliding glass patio doors bring the view of the outdoors inside … and what a view it is!
When you step outside, you’ll appreciate that the house is perched cliff-side above the natural wonder of the Barton Creek Greenbelt. You’ll find a small, inviting lawn and sandstone steps that cascade down to breathtaking 180-degree views of the greenbelt, the tree-filled canyon walls across the way, and Barton Creek below. If you walk a little farther toward the greenbelt, you’ll find nice seasonal views of the UT Tower and parts of the Austin skyline to the north and east. And if you’re visiting in December, you’ll see the 3,000 lights of the 155-foot tall Zilker Holiday Tree, a place that people enjoy visiting for an evening’s after-dinner entertainment.
The covered back porch invites you and your group to relax and visit out-of-doors, sharing morning coffee and breakfast, listening to birdsong and watching acrobatic squirrels chase one another through the trees. You may even see a roadrunner who lives somewhere below. In the evening you’ll partake of dinner and drinks on the porch or the lower open patio. You may hear a coyote call from the Greenbelt or a chorus of frogs and cicadas in the summertime. Twin outdoor ceiling fans keep you cool and comfortable on the porch after sundown.
Back inside, you’ll walk from the living area down four short steps into the large master suite with a comfortable queen-size bed, a collection of comfortable pillows, good bedside reading lamps, a nice remote-controlled ceiling fan, a large dresser with ample drawers, a rack for your hanging garments with plenty of hangers, and its own door and view out to the patio.
The en-suite master bath has separate his & her vanities, a shower for two with glass walls on one side for a private view out to the greenbelt. If you’re shy, don’t worry … there’s a exterior curtain you can close from inside the shower for privacy.
A large washer and dryer, plus cleaning supplies and more hanging space are behind closed doors in the master bathroom.
The second bedroom is fitted with two comfortable twin beds, good reading lights, a ceiling fan and a spacious closet with plenty of hangers.
Next door, you’ll find a modern guest bathroom with cool travertine floors and walls, a glass-walled walk-in shower, and a floor-to-ceiling mirrored wall.
The vanities in both bathrooms are a rare green quartzite, chosen to reflect the color of our beloved Barton Springs. This home was thoughtfully built and arranged to blend beautifully with the site.
Our office does double duty as a third bedroom with a full-size sofa bed custom-made by American Leather in Dallas. Its patented Comfort Sleeper system is so comfortable, several of our past guests have purchased one after sleeping on ours.
in less than ten minutes you can drive to Whole Foods Flagship Store, Trader Joe’s Central Market and other grocery stores. Travel in virtually any direction and within 10 minutes you will find a variety of shopping opportunities, from Barton Creek Square Mall. (Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillards, Apple Store, etc.) to beloved individual proprietorships such as Book People (rated one of the best independent booksellers in the US) and Waterloo Records, seller of vinyl LPs and CDs, and Julian Gold (ladies clothing).
This radius also includes varied and vibrant downtown between Lamar and Congress north of Ladybird Lake to 6th St, and shopping/dining/ entertainment districts including South Congress, and South Lamar. East Austin is a hopping area as well.
It’s less than a fifteen-minute drive to the Texas State Capitol, the University of Texas and Longhorn Games at Memorial Stadium.
You’re only a short 20-minute drive to and from Austin Bergstrom International Airport, and with our easy access to all of Austin’s major highways, you’re quickly on the way to anywhere else in town, and beyond.
If you’re going out on the town, you won’t want to miss the best and oldest honkey tonk in Texas, The Broken Spoke on South Lamar, or the delightful dance hall, Donn’s Depot, just north of the river on 5th St. for some robust and authentic fun.

About the host
Hosted by Alden & Barbara Schiller
We're a retired couple who split our time between our home in Austin TX and our working farm/ranch outside of Seguin TX, punctuated by visits to our grown children and grandchildren in Austin and Denver CO. plus travel around the US, Mexico, Canada, South America and Europe.
Over the years we have filled our home with art and interesting objects from all of these places, plus ... more importantly ... our family, friends, music and love.
We bought our first home in Barton Hills over 40 years ago never left the neighborhood. Then, as now, we were drawn to the incredible natural peace and scenic beauty of Austin's Barton Creek Greenbelt and Barton Springs Pool, juxtaposed magically in the heart of Austin, the most interesting, vital and creative city in the US. Our kids thrived growing up here.
We have enjoyed sharing our home with guests from around the world since 2011. Based on our reviews, our guests seem to really love staying here.
We pride ourselves on being friendly, courteous, responsive, responsible, informative and accessible (but not intrusive) hosts and we look forward to welcoming you to our home.
Our home has been fully licensed by the City of Austin as a Class I short term rental since city licensing began in 2013. We collect and remit applicable city and state hotel occupancy taxes on all bookings, and maintain compliance with all of the evolving ordinances and regulations governing short term rentals in Austin and the State of Texas.

Why they chose this property
As long-time residents of Barton Hills, we noticed and admired this simple Santa Fe-style cliffside casita when it was built in 1979-80. Later, when we learned that the original owners were moving to Colorado, we jumped at the opportunity to own it ourselves. We love its location overlooking the Greenbelt, and we especially love the fact that many of our neighbors are also some of our oldest dearest friends.
What makes this property unique
We (and most of our guests) think it's unique to find a place that combines such tranquility, interior interest, and proximity to unspoiled natural beauty in the very heart of this fun and vibrant "forever young" city.
