About this property

Large 2-Story Cabin w/ Canoe/Kayaks on Lake Hebron in Monson, by Moosehead Lake

NEW FOR 2023: Free Wi-fi now included. PROPERTY DESCRIPTION: An ideal location on the peaceful and beautiful Lake Hebron in the charming town of Monson. Enjoy easy access to nearby Moosehead or Sebec Lakes without the crowds and noise or extra cost. Located on the gorgeous and desirable Indian Point area of Lake Hebron, the historic Finch Camp is situated on two large lots - one with the cottage and an adjacent (catty corner) lot with the lovely and serene private lakeside area.

The two-story cottage was the first to be built on Lake Hebron more than 100 years ago, and has been updated to add modern comforts, including wi-fi and strong cell service, while still retaining its rustic charm. The cabin has peekaboo lake views through the trees and our neighboring camp and is just steps away from our dock on Lake Hebron. Our private dock area is located in a shaded grassy clearing nestled among the trees that is "catty corner" to our camp, with two Old Town kayaks and a 15 foot Old Town canoe that guests may use to explore the magical Lake Hebron. There are also plenty of lawn chairs, relaxing chaise lounges and a cedar picnic table as well as a stone fire pit at our dock area. The dock is perfect for swimming, fishing, or mooring your own watercraft.

Staying at the Finch Camp is a throwback to earlier times, with delicious fresh spring water provided via an antique hand-pumped well in front of the camp and clean running water from a deep well servicing the sinks and shower inside. It has a large country kitchen with a gas oven/stove. The large living room has an oversized fireplace and a nice heating system that does a great job warming the camp in the spring and fall. (We close up the camp in the winter.) We also keep an acoustic guitar at the camp and several sing-along song books, plus plenty of games and puzzles and DVD movies. The large wraparound porch includes a three burner propane BBQ grill and a relaxing screened area if the bugs come out.

It is a pleasant walk to the quaint town of Monson or the nearby Appalachian Trail access, and a short 13 mile ride to Moosehead Lake where you might spot a moose! There are many terrific activities in the area, including waterfalls, hiking trails, river rafting, guided moose safaris, u-pick berry farms, nearby lakes and streams, antique shops, and much more. Staying at Lake Hebron provides a nice and relaxing family lakeside experience without the crowds you'll find in Greenville, while still being just a stone's throw from Moosehead Lake so you can partake in the many outdoor activities in the area.

The ideal seasons to visit are late spring through mid-fall. Late spring is great for fishing and relaxing; summer is wonderful for swimming, hiking, fishing, kayaking, grilling, etc.; and early to mid-fall provides a quieter time to visit to soak in the stunning fall colors, crisp weather, and peaceful tranquility of the lake. Lake Hebron is known by locals to be one of the most beautiful and serene of the many Lakes in the area. Monson is a very friendly town, with several wonderful local restaurants and new art galleries.

Monson has long been recognized as a stopover for hikers on the final leg of the 2,180 mile Appalachian Trail -- it is the last stop before the famous (and grueling) 100 Mile Wilderness hike up Mount Katahdin to finish the trail. It is one of only 21 official Appalachian Trail Communities recognized by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy along the trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine.

Great experience
Exactly the end of summer getaway that my family and I were looking for. My two teenage daughters loved the experience as they had never had the opportunity to stay at a camp before. The Finch camp was better than expected and had everything we needed. Great camp feel and Monson is a beautiful area. Thank you for sharing this place with us.

Monson ME trip
This camp was perfect for us. It had more than enough amenities for us to very comfortable. We all enjoyed time on the lake and around the campfire. The Monson General Store was close by and had a great selection. Conveniently located for countless day trips throughout the area. We did not want to leave!!!

Lake Getaway
We had a great time at Finch Camp! Everything was as stated in the listing. The lake is beautiful and the loons made their presence known. Everyone in town was very friendly. Make sure to stop by the historical society on a Saturday for a tour of Monson's past.

About the host

Host profile image
I am the grandson of Charles Finch, who purchased the camp in 1947 as his hunting getaway. The property has been in our family ever since. When most of the family moved out of the area we decided to begin renting it out from late spring to early fall while still using it for personal use periodically. It is a very special camp in a wonderful location. We appreciate your interest in visiting the Finch Camp.

Why they chose this property

I spent many wonderful summers at this camp as a child. I have fond memories of Lake Hebron, chasing bullfrogs, fishing for trout or perch in the quiet lake, hiking the many trails, or taking a short trip to pick wild blueberries in the countryside. The summer days were sunny with occasional thunderstorms that we rode out playing games in the comfortable cabin with a large fire in the living room. We often took the short walk into town, stopping along the way to observe loons on the lake and watch in awe as occasional wandering moose passed by. We'd also take the short drive to Greenville to shop and dine or explore the expansive Moosehead Lake recreation area just a few miles up the road. Spending time in Monson is like returning to simpler times in a very magical place.

What makes this property unique

In addition to spending relaxing time at the camp swimming, fishing, and exploring Lake Hebron, the area has many wonderful activities to choose from. A typical visit might include hiking up the unbelievable Mt. Kineo island in Moosehead Lake (a definite bucket list item), picking blueberries, taking a guided moose viewing Safari by canoe in many of the local moose habitats in the area, hiking to local waterfalls via the nearby Appalachian Trail (the trail access in Monson is just a short walk from our camp), fishing in the abundant local lakes and streams, or taking a peaceful canoe ride on the many rivers and ponds in the area (including Lake Hebron). At nearby Moosehead Lake (the largest lake in New England), you can take a trip around the lake on the historic Katahdin steamship, fish for a variety of species of trout and lake salmon, have an enjoyable meal on deck overlooking the lake at popular Kelly's Landing, take a thrilling and absolutely gorgeous seaplane ride above the lake, or simply visit the many shops and restaurants in Greenville, the gateway town to the lake which also has an abundance of guide services available for your many possible adventures.
