About the host
Hosted by Sue Vican
My parents left this fabulous summer beachfront home to me and my sister Gina. I first came here when my eldest son was 5 years old and had great fun boating, beach combing, swimming, collecting clams and oysters off the beach (and eating them), fishing (my son started fishing for 'coddies' in the harbour and later caught his first salmon here). I remember the year my dear old dad won the local 'salmon derby' for biggest catch of the day, another fishing expedition when he hooked a bird that was fishing too (ever try to get a live bird off your fish hook?), also the time my son boiled his baby shark to try and extract the shark's teeth only to find they had boiled away into nothing, many potluck dinners and parties with the locals, dinners at Hollyhock and visiting their beautiful organic garden, hikes, picking apples out of abandoned orchards and blackberries for delicious pie making (and eating, you're catching on to a key theme here I hope!). Have come back to Cortes many summers, the natural beauty here is stunning, gorgeous beach, water and mountain views from every part of the island, I could go on and on.... The ferry rides are fun, last time we saw a pod of dolphins right in front of us... I've also traveled by sea plane which is a great adventure itself...I live in Northern California with Sparkie the killer toy poodle (pictured here), my husband Ivan and two sons.
Why they chose this property
My parents discovered the 'hidden gem' called Gorge Harbour, Cortes Island in one of their long summer sailing expeditions in this region. They fell in love at first site, got off the sailboat, found a realtor, the rest is history. The Lodge had been built by a glazier who used some interesting old windows in the Lodge that he salvaged from other houses where he was replacing the old w/the new; his most interesting glass work is some 'L' shaped windows where the two pieces of glass are glazed together w/o frames between to maximize the Gorgeous views... The Lodge still needed a lot of work and my parents spent the next several summers laboring away to make it the beautiful serene retreat that we now invite you to come enjoy. My Dad loved the locals, the great salmon fishing, the plentiful oysters and clams on the beachfront, gardening and partying. My mom loves the view of the Gorge Harbour entrance with boats coming and going, beach combing to find interesting artsy driftwood pieces (some decorate the lodge still), sunbathing on the deck and waking up to more of the Gorgeous views.
What makes this property unique
My absolute favorite thing about the Wilcox Lodge is THE AIR SMELLS SWEET, do you big city dwellers even know what I'm talking about??? I myself forget how great air can smell when I'm stuck in the big city pollution...on Cortes the pace is slower, the people friendly, the natural beauty is stunning, great beach, water, snow-capped mountain and forest views in every direction, hard for me to pick a favorite view they are all so spectacular. The local seafood is great, there are farm stands and a coop store where you can buy organic foods. There are some excellent restaurants for when you don't feel like cooking. Food truck right on Whaletown Rd for fast, cheap and good tacos. The Hollyhock retreat offers a variety of interesting workshops and you don't have to stay there to enjoy their fabulous dinners and organic gardens. Other island activities include swimming at Hague Lake, kayaking and sailing excursions, fishing, and more. Google and you will find lots of info. A number of famous people have chosen Cortes Island as a summer retreat and for good reason, yet it is not highly touristy or over-commercialized. Our Lodge has a great big expansive deck, I could be happy just hanging out on the deck all day. I love sleeping in the trundle bed, waking up and looking out at the water one direction and the forest the other direction. Mostly I enjoy spending time with family and friends in our own private little piece of paradise. I hope you will come, enjoy and create your own fabulous Cortes memories.
