Delightful renovated historic property in real Tuscany
The property was a gem. From the website photos it looked great, reality was much better as it was bigger than expected, you got great atmosphere and its location in the heart of a peaceful historic Tuscan village was as authentic as you could hope for. We were there mid winter for 10 nights and the heating was more than adequate and the beds so comfortable and warm. Everything needed for self catering holiday was there, including nearby markets, however village and surrounds had several great dining places should you wish. Our 21 yr old son decided to stay with us for the duration. It is only one bedroom and the sun room with beds was a bit chilly for winter sleeping so he used the double fold out sofa in the lounge room which opened/closed very easily and proved very suitable and no hassle at all. The apartment is up 30 odd steep steps - not a problem but if you have some mobility issues then you would need to think about this carefully. As stated in information, a guest carpark is located about 100m from front door. This is used by residents and is quite handy and certainly safe. For proper exploration of the area you do need a car. Florence is a 10 min drive to Pontedere station and an easy 45 minute train ride; don;t drive. Pisa and Lucca are both a 20 minute drive and in winter we parked very close to the sites we wanted to see. Other recommended sights - San Gimignano, Volterra, Vinci - are a very easy drive and winter crowds were very few making Jan/Feb a fantastic time for crowdless sightseeing and easy parking. Cannot stress enough the value of a GPS in your car for getting around the myriad of roads. Marie and Lorenzo were delightful and helpful hosts and for those who do not speak Italian then these english speaking hosts are perfect. I cannot stress enough how wonderful the overall apartment and hosts made this wish for an authentic historic Tuscan holiday. If you want wide open spaces and wineries at your doorstep then this is not for you. If you want delightful, cosy, renovated 12th century accomodation in the heart of a 12th century village then don't look any further.

Wonderful stay in Vicopisano
I have wanted to stay at Casa Colomba for 2 years! My dream came true and it did not disappoint. Marie and Lorenzo are wonderful hosts. She is there to give you wonderful suggestions and to help book your excursions. The accommodations were great. The town is right out of the history books. We plan on returning again.

Top Ferienziel - immer wieder gerne

About the host

Hosted by Marie and Lorenzo

Host profile image
Marie and Lorenzo moved to Tuscany in 1993. Lorenzo is originally from Turin in the North of Italy and Marie is from Leamington Spa in the UK. We met in England where Lorenzo was studying English in 1998 and we were married in Italy on Lake Orta in the year 2000. We lived in a small village on the lake for 3 years before moving to the beautiful region of Tuscany.
We bought Casa Colomba in 2006 and slowly and lovingly began its restoration. By 2010 we were able to open our home to guests and share with them the delights of this region.
By 2014 and by complete accident - or should we call it fate - we became fully-fledged property managers offering characteristic vacation homes in our small town.
We now manage 13 properties including our own! Lorenzo has worked in hospitality and customer service for more than 20 years where he mainly worked in 5 star hotels. Marie recently 'hung up her wings' after delivering first class service for 20 years as a flight attendant for a British airline.

Why they chose this property

We bought Casa Colomba after searching for a property for more than a year and after seeing more than 40 properties.

Casa Colomba was not the type of property we were looking for as we had something a little smaller in mind!

At the time we were renting a small apartment in a village within the district of Vicopisano but we were desperate to buy our own property.

We both loved the village of Vicopisano and often walked around the historic centre wondering what lay behind the crumbling facades and huge wooden doors.

At the time there was not much on the market but friends had told us about a newly renovated property in the village so off we went to have a look at the outside.

The property looked good but it appeared much bigger than what we were looking for - however we spotted a 'For Sale' sign in the window of another nearby property which looked like an apartment on the first floor.
We made an appointment with the owner and couldn't believe what we'd stumbled across. The owners produced a huge iron key and unlocked two giant wooden doors on the ground floor.

Inside there was nothing but exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings, earth on the floor and the calling for a lot of work!

Before we had even seen the rest of the house we were hooked by the romanticism of it all especially when we discovered that the property included a 11th Century residential tower.

What we thought was going to be an apartment turned out to be a 3-storey house with a garden full of original features and way beyond our budget and the rest is history!

With two floors completed and one more to go Casa Colomba is a labour of love and a project for life.

We named the house Casa Colomba as Colomba was the name of Marie's grandmother with whom she grew up with as well as being a girl's name Colomba which means 'Dove' in Italian.

What makes this property unique

Imagine…
an 11th Century Tower House in the heart of a Medieval village, surrounded by a beautiful landscape of pine forests, olive groves and sunflower fields

Imagine…
discovering tiny hamlets, ancient castles and Medieval towers not far from the scent of the Mediterranean Sea

Imagine…
sipping your morning cappuccino with the locals, dining al fresco in a local Trattoria, and enjoying a glass of wine from a nearby vineyard.

These are just some us the unique benefits of living in a historical building in a small Tuscan town where the pace is slow!

Casa Colomba is one of the few remaining tower houses in Vicopisano, where you can still witness the tower. The tower is situated at the rear of the property so it is not seen from the front entrance but is clearly seen from the garden.

To have a garden is a bonus and a luxury in a Medieval historic centre. The garden is South West facing and is a complete sun trap with beautiful views over the hills and Medieval towers.

The other unique benefit is the location. In the historic centre we are just a short walk to all the village amenities but also just 100 metres in the other direction we are in the heart of the country surrounded by pine-covered hills and sunflower fields in the summer. There are plenty of walking and cycling trails for all levels of fitness and abilities.

Finally we love the location of Vicopisano because apart from the countryside we also love the sea and in just 30 minutes we can escape the heat of the summer sun at the beach or head for the higher hills in the more remote villages.
