Horrible. Don't trust property

My wife and I and our daughter and her boyfriend were travelling up for Texas OU weekend. We pulled up to the place at about 9:00 pm. I noticed that none of the e-mails we received had any information about checking in and there was a parking lot gate that required a code to enter. When we messaged the host he said that the property wasn't available due to a plumbing issue and sent pictures. Clearly, lots of dry-wall had been removed and other stuff done. However, his e-mail said that he'd been hoping that they would have the repairs finished in time for our stay. This means he should have known all week that it was unlikely and canceled us when we could still have booked something else. It was only once we called VRBO that we got a message that our reservation was canceled and our refund was processed. VRBO does not do same day rentals so we could not book another vrbo. They put us up at a Fairfield Inn (after suggesting super 8) which was not anywhere near that quality of the place we had booked. Don't think I'll ever use vrbo again as it ruined our weekend. We should have been given notice far before we got there.
