The Space Located on 66 acres of rolling farmland and wooded countryside, this restored log cabin - built circa 1855 - is rustic but not the least bit primitive. A massive stone fireplace makes relaxing in the winter cozy. Enjoy your morning coffee along with a beautiful view of Ohio farmland from the screened-in porch. Jump into the outdoor shower or hot tub after a day of hiking or shopping in nearby Yellow Springs. Centrally located, the Cabin is just 20 minutes from Dayton and 50 minutes from Columbus. This 19th century log cabin - original to the property - was dismantled and restored in 1989. Various updates over the years keep the Cabin fresh without compromising its rustic qualities. Guest Access The Cabin is located on a working hay farm and home to 40 head of American Bison. Guests may walk the property, enjoy the hot tub located a few yards from the Cabin and fish in the catch-and-release pond. There is a charcoal grill and charcoal provided for outside cooking, an outdoor shower, and a fire pit nearby is a fun place to roast marshmallows and tell stories. Two bicycles on site are available for guests who want to ride the Ohio to Erie bike trail, which is just a mile from the farm entrance. Other Things to Note The Cabin is a homey, comfortable place — nothing fussy, nothing untouchable. We expect you to put your feet up, take a deep breath and relax while you’re there.

The cabin was lovely with everything we needed but had so much rustic and historical charm. Warm cozy comfortable beds such nice scenery. Sunrise to sunset. We caught several bass very large and healthy and saw catfish carp and many bluegills. Town of Yelliw springs was charming with many shops and restaurants. We will be back!
Everything was so great. What a beautiful little cabin next to a beautiful little lake with a hot tub right next to it. I enjoyed both evenings looking from the hot tub to the lake. Will be back!
We so enjoyed this unique property and all of its equally unique furnishings. We loved reading all about the cabin and the restoration process. Beautiful setting, and we also enjoyed the hot tub. Thanks for a great stay!
I keep hitting 5 stars and for some reason the 5th on every category disappears? Regardless of that, Sarah met us when we arrived, showed us through the cabin that she so obviously loves..for good reason. We did, too. Every nook and cranny has been pondered and expertly attended to. Every need that a resident might have considered. We came to see the bison and enjoy the hot tub and did neither, but but thoroughly enjoyed the product of what has obviously been a project of love. 5 stars across the board and..Thank you
The cabin was just lovely and the views were gorgeous! We spent so much time relaxing in the sunroom. Sarah was an excellent host and her communication was wonderful. Perfect for a peaceful getaway while exploring the area!
Relaxing, peaceful, and picturesque. Amazing cabin furnished with everything we needed. Very close to Yellow Springs and many parks for hiking. Well stocked pond with good sized largemouth. Sarah was very accommodating. We will be booking this place again. Pictures on site don’t do it justice.
My friend and I met in the middle (from Illinois and West Virginia) to have a birthday visit. The area and town of Yellow Springs was perfect. Our host Sarah went way above and beyond expectation in answering all questions and making our little trip a memory we will treasure forever. Thank you Sarah!!!!!
The listing of this place doesn't do it justice! We were very pleasantly surprised to find an historic cabin that had all of the updated modern amenities--that didn't take away from the historic charm. Clean, comfortable, quiet, great lakeside location--couldn't ask for more--and the host was awesome--very responsive and extremely accommodating and friendly. If you are headed to the area--I would choose this place over any other hotel, inn, or rental that I've seen.
VINTAGE cabin decorated with a hint toward a Swedish theme, adorned with useful antique furniture and on a property that soothes your landscape palette (including a working bison farm). Throw in the outdoor shower AND hot tub AND fishing pond….really hard to top. Take a hike at John Bryan Statr Park next door
Unique cabin with fantastic screened in porch, with beautiful view overlooking pond and country landscape. Perfect for enjoying your morning cup of coffee. Modernized rustic interior, complimented with Swedish accents. There is a small herd of bison roaming in a beautiful silvopasture easily viewed on the property. Sarah was great host, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this peaceful property. Thad and Lisa
From the moment we walked in to the cabin, we were pleasantly overwhelmed with the charm. Arriving later in the evening, the cabin was beautifully lit inside and out. We had such fun exploring all the rooms and the absolute uniqueness of the decor. Waking in the morning to a view of the bison nearby the kitchen window was a thrill!! We very much appreciated the chronicles of the cabin to look through and read the history. Our hosts were very responsive and friendly when we reached out to them for questions and recommendations. We were fortunate to have been at the property on National Bison Day and were invited to join in the event at the ranch. The king bed was very comfortable and all the thoughtful extras throughout the cabin were greatly appreciated. Quietly enjoying coffee in the mornings on the porch overlooking the pond and scenery was the perfect tranquil time we needed.
My friends and I had a great experience with this rental! The house is charming with unique decorations. The interior is very cozy. The hot tub is a great benefit and has a wonderful view. The host, Sarah, was also fantastic. Communication was great and she does a lovely job hosting.
The place was nice and cozy, definitely a great place to stay for a weekend trip. Sarah was super accommodating and communicative which made the stay all the more enjoyable. Definitely would recommend this cabin and I would definitely book this place again!

About the host
Hosted by Sarah Courtright
I suppose most hosts say they love meeting people - and I do. But I have hosted guests at Green Plains Cabin since 2001! One article I read suggested that most hosts leave the industry after eight years. So if market presence is any indicator, I really LOVE hosting! Moreover, it's been a wonderful way for me to keep the cabin in perfectly maintained condition to share with friends, family and guests. I grew up in a tiny, Swedish town in central Illinois. The fellas who restored the cabin suggested that it was build by Swedes based on the corner notching style. So Swedish design elements figure largely in my furnishing and decor choices. Living out my Swedish heritage is part of what has kept me engaged over the long haul. Now that I'm a retired lady, hosting guests keeps me in pocket change. My husband, Glen, and I built a new home for ourselves on the property in 2020 so we are available at a moment's notice if guests have questions or needs.
Why they chose this property
Located on the western edge of the Virginia Military Survey (VMS), this land has been in the family for generations. Quakers settled the area in the 18th & 19th centuries and it is the home to several Underground Railway sites. There is even a Civil War cemetery adjacent to the property.
I love the history, love watching our bison roam the rolling pastures, and love the fireflies in the summer! While enjoying the country, I like that we are close to "civilization" - Yellow Springs is a fun and funky little town nearby (and home to Dave Chappelle), and South Charleston is a nice little town very near where you can find a grocery store, gas station, bank, a couple of quaint shops and pizza!
What makes this property unique
My guests frequently remark that, when they stay at the cabin, even though they are close to services on which we all have come to rely, they feel like they have gone 150 years back in time. It's those hand-hewn logs, the screened porch, the tire swing, life slowing down...you could be staying in a cabin in Montana. But most of my guests come from fewer that 75 miles away - how great is that?!
