About John and Mary Reilly
Greetings from our villa called Flying Toucans! We first visited Costa Rica in November of 1998 on our honeymoon. Having both lived on Maui for many years and traveled extensively internationally, we were interested in a new adventure and a memorable challenge. We had read about the country for several years prior to our visit and it sounded as though Costa Rica fit all of our criteria. After exploring the various regions of the country, meeting the people and having a delightful time we knew we were destined to relocate. As it happened, on this first trip, we discovered this one-of-a-kind property and purchased it. This set in motion our plans of eventually relocating. After more preparation, we made the move and actually lived in a tent on the property for several months while designing Flying Toucans. This allowed us to understand how best to showcase the awesome views and the wildlife while combining luxury with tropical living. Now that Flying Toucans has become a reality, we offer to share it with you. With years of experience in the luxury tourism industry, we believe we have created a truly unique beautiful place for you to call home while you embark on your own adventures. If you have been looking and looking for that special destination you will never forget, you have found it! Hope to see you here soon, :) John and Mary Reilly

Best View Ever, not without some issues
Absolutely beautiful spot between Dominical and Uvita. Pretty Easy to access off the main road with no need to have a real 4x4 to get there. A 4x4 may be needed for side trips though. Being close to the main road has its advantages and disadvantages however. While enjoying the view in the outdoor living room where you would like to always hear the sound of the surf often you will hear the truck noise that is a constant on this road. It is distracting from the beauty but not completely overwhelming. Bedrooms are upstairs through an outside tile staircase (that can be slippery when wet)and are roomy and comfortable. The upstairs deck is also comfortable with additional beautiful views. AC in the bedrooms was adequate on hot nights. Screens could use some repairs but not to many bugs to deal with. Kitchen is the only downstairs room leading to the open living room. It was well supplied with dishes and glasses etc and a dishwasher, washer and dryer.
As for other notes on the listing, beach access is DEFINITLY not a short walk from the house. The house manager did NOT recommend the stated “path” and when we tried it we found out why. It really wasn’t there. All beaches we went to 4-5 in total were a drive away 10-15 and were mostly beautiful. You MUST know the tide timetable to use some of these beaches as they are not available during high tide.
All in all a wonderful experience if you do not require a place that is walkable to the beach.
Pros: View, Kitchen, Rooms
Cons: Noise, Drive to Beach
Wow, Mary and I are both surprised by receiving your 3 star review. Since most guests consider reviews when evaluating a property I think it would be appropriate for us to respond in detail. "absolutely beautiful spot" All eighty three previous reviewers agree with you on this 🙂!. "pretty easy access" Yes, we actually might even have the easiest access of any home in the area as the entrance is mainly level and not a steep climb up a dirt road which is standard in the Uvita/Dominical area. "truck noise" This is the first mention of truck noise ever being an issue to our guests enjoyment, We are insulated and separated by a tropical forest and somewhat distant from the local two lane country highway, no view of it, and although it might be heard off in the distance if one choose to focus on it, never to our knowledge has it been a distraction to the beauty, privacy and enjoyment of our guests. "screens could use some repairs" We pride ourselves on keeping Flying Toucans is excellent condition. So much so that we ask our guests to please let us know if there is anything that is not in excellent working condition so we can immediately attend to it. This is asked first in our driving directions/ info packet sent before arrival, also on our rental agreement that "you agree to make known to us asap any deficiency that you notice inside the villa or on the property such as leaks, tears, a/c malfunctioning, pool clarity etc..." Upon guests' arrival Daryl, our manager, introduces himself cordially and offers to help in any way (reservations/activities/things of interest) to make your stay even better and requests that if you notice any maintenance issues or things that you feel are not in prime condition to just pick up the cell phone we provide, speed dial #1 and he will promptly take care of it. I asked Daryl if the guest had contacted him about screens needing repair. He said "no" and out of curiosity we immediately checked them to how much repair there could be since the guest felt it necessary to put them in their review. We found little that needed attention, nothing that we thought a guest would even take notice of including our repeat guests presently staying with us . "short walk to the beach" We never want to give the impression we are a beachfront property but do know that we have guests who would love to know that they could discover a deserted beach and coastline to explore below our property. The access is for those willing to hike down the hill. You inquired about this hike in an email before you booked and here was my response ..." We do have a private path/hike to the beach through the forest. I would not consider it easy but I am in my sixties and enjoy the serenity, privacy and beauty of going to our beach. At low tide there is plenty of sand and at all times great views"
In Summary, It is always Mary's and my desire that our guests experience an amazing time at Flying Toucans in all aspects. That they are mesmerized by the view, the pool, the villa, the wildlife and just the paradise feel of being on the property. That our guests memories are those of wonder as expressed in previous reviews. We wish this and more had been your experience as well.

We felt like we found a piece of heaven on Earth! The views and wildlife were incredible!
The minute we walked up to the house and turned and looked across the infinity pool with Pacific Ocean in the background we knew we picked the right property for our vacation! The open living area makes it so easy to relax and just sit and wait for the wildlife to present itself and believe me the wildlife here is plentiful! We saw Capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans, fiery billed Aracari, Agouti and Coati! We did not see any sloths on the property but did see them at the Manuel Antonio National Park. Our bedrooms were very comfortable and the air conditioners kept the room nice a cool for a great nights sleep! The bathrooms upstairs are large with wooden doors that open to the outdoors that allows for the ultimate experience of showering out in the jungle feel! The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed so we didn’t feel like we had to go out for every meal! We enjoyed the charcoal grill for pool side meals! There is a Big grocery in Uvita about 10 minutes away the property and many road side fruit stands, Daryl (the property manager) was very helpful and gave us many tips for shopping and adventures and even made dinner reservations for us one night! Our stay was just the right amount of relaxation mixed with adventure!
Perfect! Thank you for staying in our piece of heaven, looking forward to your return.
Amazing place with amazing views
We cannot say enough about how fabulous this place is. It was immaculate and everything was neat as a pin. It had all of the amenities of home, but in paradise! The views were spectacular we would have been happy just staying at the house, but we did venture out for some surf lessons and a horseback tour of Nauyaca falls. The property manager Daryl arranged everything for us and was available with any issue or question we had. The locals were very friendly and helpful as well. We already booked our next trip! Pura Vida❤
Great to have you guys as guests, we are excited for your return visit next year!
A action in paradise!!!
Our family travels a lot, and so far it was the best place we’ve ever stayed!!! The views from the house are stunning, pool is so good, feels good to chill out there after hiking! Daryl was a big help telling us about good places to eat and activities to do! The most fun for us was watching wild life around us, we were feeding capuci monkeys, coatis, agoutis, toucans, watching birds, lizards, butterflies! Beaches around the plays are so nice, our favorite was Vetanas and Whale’s Tail. Food was good everywhere, we didn’t go to one place twice just because we liked to try as many new places as possible!
Thank you to John and Mary for such a beautiful house, Daryl and Donna for keeping it running so well!!!
Hi Teresa, We are touched you would consider FT the best place you have ever stayed. we would love to have you come back again and will keep your vacation home in great shape until you return. :) John and Mary

- outdoor living space is large and comfortable to lounge around in
- great outdoor speaker for playing tunes while you enjoy the amazing view (and did I mention the pool and view???)
We had a fabulous time and loved being in the middle of Dominical and Uvita!
Thanks Jen for reviewing our property and spending your family summer vacation with us. Come back soon!
Gorgeous home with spectacular views, exciting wildlife and great management
Thanks Sudi, brief and to the point!
The area between Dominical and Uvita on the southern Pacific coast is famous for its striking landscape where the mountains come right down to the water. Not subject to the north's dry, dusty season during the months of December to April, visitors to the Dominical region will enjoy the year-round greenery and lushness of jungles and forests.
While the rural airport in Quepos (30 minutes north of Flying Toucans) may be used, many guests choose to begin their adventure from the main international airport in San Jose (SJO) thus allowing them to see the varied landscape on the way down. The drive down to the villa is 3 hours, not including how many times you stop to take in the awesome views en route. Flying Toucans is six miles south of Dominical on a perfect road. If you can ever pull yourself away from the villa and view you will find abundant choices of dining, shopping, and activities close by.
Other Activities: Ziplines, nature treks, kayaking tours, white water rafting, atv tours
Golf: Besides the new golf course there's LOTS to do around here: Bird and animal watching, surfing, swimming, beach-combing, hiking, horseback tours to beaches and waterfalls, zip lines, day trips to Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, butterfly farm, serpentaria (snake exhibition), ultra-light flightseeing tours, sport fishing.
About an hour north of us is Quepos (Manuel Antonio National Park). The casual village of Dominical offers international and local style dining, a bank/ATM, a bakery, small grocery stores, an English-speaking doctor and dentist, pharmacy, real estate offices, souvenir shops, internet cafe, surfboard rentals and visitor information and booking services for local activities. A 2-minute walk from the villa is a small and beautiful European hotel with fine dining and full spa services. The villages of Uvita and Bahia, 6 miles south, offer internet, shops, restaurants, beaches, boat tours, a butterfly farm and the lovely Ballena National Park, home of the 'Whale Tail' (as is seen from Flying Toucans). Obviously absent from our corner of the world are large numbers of tourists, suits/ties/pantyhose and traffic lights... come see for yourself!
