The Last Resort, formerly known as The Tower, is one of the original Leatherwood structures—now transformed into a cozy, efficiency studio apartment. Renovated in December 2020, it features new bedding, a ceramic tile bathroom floor, equine-themed artwork, and a handcrafted cedar bar. Bright, simple, and full of charm, it’s the ideal no-fuss retreat for couples seeking a quick escape to Horse Country.

Located right next to the Equine Center and restaurant, The Last Resort offers unbeatable convenience for trail riders and horse enthusiasts. Stalls are available by reservation at the Equine Center, making this a great base for your equestrian adventures. Whether you’re here to relax, ride, or just reconnect with nature, this humble hideaway has everything you need for a peaceful stay.

This home is located in the 4000 acre, Leatherwood Mountain Resort in Ferguson, NC. Our guests are invited to enjoy our Horseback Riding program where you can experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains pristine wilderness by Horseback (reservation required). You will have access to miles of hiking trails, mountain streams, stocked fishing pond, community swimming pool, play ground and tennis courts, creek tubing (seasonal), on-site restaurant with active live music & event calendar (guest advised to check hours when planning meals).

Leatherwood Mountains has surveillance or recording devices on the property. Our neighborhood is very safe and our property very secluded. For added peace of mind, we have security cameras by the gated entrance and common areas. Individual properties may also have cameras on the EXTERIOR of homes. Please be assured they are not directed at private areas, hot tub porches etc.

Amazing!

This place was beautiful and so relaxing and so welcoming. It was like it’s own happy community. The one thing I would say is that the description of the place didn’t come close to describing how amazing this place was. You could rent bikes and ride bikes for a day, you could go just enjoy watching and maybe petting the horses in the fields, or play at their basketball court! They also had a great playground for the kids too. Oh and so many hiking trail options.

This trip was greatly anticipated following my husband's covid infection in May. We were originally set to come in June but had to postpone. Rental was clean and we really enjoyed our daily walks down Meadow Rd.- wished we could take the road home with us🤣 We will be back!

Peace & Tranquillity In The Mountains

I can not say enough nice things about Leatherwood Mountain and in particular the Last Resort where I stayed for a week recently. The no frills moniker is very apt but at the same time the efficiency is extremely cozy and comfortable. The layout is intuitive and makes the most out of the limited space. If you’re into extended walks like I am then you will find the roads and trails that encompass the development are both physically challenging and visually rewarding. And this location is the perfect stepping stone to so many other wonderful places in the surrounding vicinity such as Grandfather Mountain or Stone Mountain State Park. The quiet and the beauty of this mountain retreat are profound and substantial. So don’t be afraid to book a stay. I guarantee you will not regret it!

Good Vacay, No Frills

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This little cabin is close to the barns and horsey stuff which was our main interest. It didn't cost much, but it let us find out if we would like to bring our horses in the future. It does not have a dishwasher or washer & dryer but we didn't come here to cook a banquet or do laundry so we didn't care. It's just two of us and our needs are simple.Pro: the people were all very nice and I felt like they gave me special treatment. The horses work hard but are well cared for and in good shape. I had a lesson one day and a trail ride the next day. Lesson instructor really understood and helped me with what I need to work on. The trail guide was a young lady who was very personable and engaged all the riders so we went from a group of strangers to friends during the ride. The refrigerator was clean and worked well. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was simple but had plenty of surface areas to put my toiletries and spread out (Yay!) and was very clean. They only give one towel per person, so bring your own if you bathe every day. The TV and Internet service were excellent, we were able to log into our streaming accounts and watch our "binge faves" just like at home.Con: The kitchen accoutrements were a bit sparse. You should bring your own large salad bowl, cooking pot, and sharp knife. The air conditioner was barely able to cool the room (end of June hot). The oven storage drawer was nasty with mouse leavings. I washed every dish, plate, pan, and piece of silverware before I used it as a safety precaution.Summary: We had a good time and would go back again. As a try-out for a few days this cabin was affordable and convenient for us. I would rent it again, but if I could afford it I might pick a little bit larger one. This is for two people only. And you have to like each other.

Cozy but needs improvement

Rating Details: The property manager was somewhat unhelpful. The vacation rental was somewhat dirty. I was very happy with the location. I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: For the most part we enjoyed our stay. The location is serene, the horses are lovely, and the bed is quite comfortable. Access to fishing spots and hiking trails was wonderful, the TV came loaded with every streaming service you might want to use, and the WiFi was strong enough that my wife and I worked remotely for several days and never had a hiccup in service.However, the cabin needs some significant improvements. The kitchen provisions were inadequate. The only available pots and pans are very old, deeply scratched teflon pans, and baking sheets in the oven storage were covered with mice droppings. Many dishes and cookware were poorly washed from previous stays, and so we had to re-wash everything we used. I know it's "no frills", but I don't think clean dishes are a frill.It was cold during our stay, so we ran the heater most days and nights. The gas line has some kind of flow problem, and the heater blasts a VERY loud and VERY high pitched scream into the room about once every hour or two, for about 15 seconds. We slept VERY poorly. Guest book logs show that multiple visitors have complained about the screaming heater before, and apparently the issue remains unresolved.Check in and check out were straightforward, but communication was poor. We were instructed to download a proprietary app to view all facility information we needed (we didn't). With a little work we managed to figure out this information without the app. Also we booked via phone and made clear we were bringing a pet and had no problem with the pet fee, but the pet fee wasn't charged until a week after our departure because "The cleaner said you had a pet and she charged extra for the cleaning", which felt a little accusatory. Tried to arrange a later check out after the work day but got told we'd incur a $37.50 late check out fee. It's $54 per night, so a charge of almost an extra night, which seems ridiculous. We left a day early and probably would not stay he

We have stayed 3-4 times a year for the past 3 years. We were greeted by name and "Welcome Home" by staff. Truly our second family. Our horses love it also. Stalls are great and the trails were awesome. Thanks to all for the hard work that goes into maintaining this beautiful facility. We had 10 additional riders to join us the last weekend and they have fallen in love with Leatherwood also. Looking forward to many more trips in the future. Music and Food at Restaurant was wonderful. Cabin was clean and beautiful. Thank you.

Reviewer Comments: Accommodations were clean and located wonderfully with the exception of being next to the dumpsters for the entire property and of course they were emptied at 7am which was extremely loud and woke us up. Trails need to be marked not only by name but by perhaps symbols of ability such as green circle for easy, blue square for intermediate, black diamond for difficult and xx for extreme. We did find ourselves on a difficult trail luckily we went up it and not down it, down it would have been very dangerous. Written policy needs to made for barn such as where to dump manure etc.

Wayne, Josh, Curtis, Perry, Jamie, Dawn and V made sure we had everything we needed! Food & drinks were excellent. Kim and Pete were great trail hosts. Took us out 3 days showing us property along the way. Great conversations with Bonnie and Barry & Amanda and Keith & Trevor. This is our third year coming and truly feel a part of the Leatherwood Family. Accommodations were awesome for us and our horses. Most trails are in great shape! Appreciative of all the hard work to bring them back to life. So peaceful and relaxing.

Brief break at Leatherwood

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: My wife and I have been to Leatherwood twice in the last year and were very pleased with our accommodations. I went by myself this time just to relax, ride my bike, do a little fishing, and generally kick-back. Don't be confused, the Last Resort cabin is very much an efficiency, with pretty much everything within two or three steps. For my needs, this was fine and it was clean and comfortable. It is situated right next to the stables, so if you like horses, it ideal. Unfortunately, that also meant there were a lot of flies, so I had to keep the swatter at hand. My only other complaint was that the unit had a window air-conditioner, which was fine, but it was really LOUD! The price reflected the lower-level amenities, so for someone who is not looking for anything fancy, this was a certainly acceptable.
