About the host
Hosted by Carah Thiesen
This is a photo of Jack & June at the cottage during 2020. We are Carl & Lisa, son and daughter, to Jack and June. We named the cottage J&J's Place in their honor. The original owners of the property were our grandparents, Ray and Adeline, who purchased the property in 1951. Our family has spent thousands of hours on the lake and surrounding area as both year 'round residents and summer residents. Yes, of course, we love winter too!
Why they chose this property
Lake Katherine is literally pristine. It does not (yet) have any invasive species. Our shoreline is firm sand, with a gentle slope. Our lake area is wonderful and we have left it, in its natural state. Many of our Lake Katherine families are generational owners and we have all tried to preserve that Northwood's charm as you paddle on the lake....you want to see nature, not manicured lawns.
We are literally next-door-neighbors to part of The Yawkey Forest Preserve. The preserve consists of 400 acres & 4.4 miles of Lake Katherine shoreline. It was donated by the decedents of Cyrus Yawkey to the Northwoods Land Trust in 2018. This has allowed Lake Katherine to remain one of the most undeveloped and naturally beautiful lakes in the state. You will see many kayaks and canoes out on the water, with people enjoying access to this preserve area.

What makes this property unique
We have chosen to make our cottage reflect our family's heritage, and hope that our guests enjoy the way we have kept our treasures from the past.
We have a Northwoods bottle collection in the Kitchen/Utility Room area. The bottles were actually "found" by all members of the family. In the 60's and 70's we actually took hikes to find various roadside ditches off of abandoned roads, where vacationers would literally dump their garbage in the 20's and 30's. You will get an idea of how many dumps there were by the collections that we have displayed.
Our mother, June, grew up in Minocqua and her step father was Earl Kennedy. The Kennedy family lived on the Island of Minocqua, directly across from the present library. Earl was one of the great Minocqua fishing guides in the 20's and actually paid for Law School at Marquette with the money he earned guiding. He spent lots of time taking us (his grandchildren) fishing. Of course, we treasured our time with him, so as a gift to us, he worked with some Native American friends to build a "fish crib", that is located to the right side of our dock. It remains there and is a great spot for catching fish! Many of the photos and prints that we have displayed throughout the cottage are from Earl's original collection.
There are many original paintings in the cottage, by Reg Trevisan, a dear friend of Jack and June's. We also have many prints and carvings from various local artists who have captured the spirit of Northwood's wildlife. Of course we love the Packers and Badgers and our lower level features some memorabilia from our beloved Wisconsin teams.
