About this property
Downings Farmhouse - a Historic 6 Bedroom Home on 3 Acres of Yard and Forest
Welcome to Downings Farmhouse, a historic property in the middle of Virginia's beautiful Northern Neck, featuring 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 3 living room spaces, a formal dining room, and the historic original general store of the Downings area. Close to a beautiful State Park on the water (with beach, kayak rentals and hiking trails), wineries and more, this home is the perfect place to gather with family and friends.
The house has three living room spaces: a large formal conversational living room with a wood burning fireplace, a playroom, and a lounge upstairs, the last two of which have smart TVs for video games (you can also bring your own Nintendo switch to use with the docking station) and movie nights. A wide assortment of toys are available to keep kids entertained: Lego, Hot Wheels, marble run, wooden train tracks and wood blocks. The house also has a classic pinball machine, air hockey, a foosball table, and various board games and puzzles to keep the whole family entertained during your stay! Starlink internet is provided for streaming needs.
The classic kitchen with a large copper farmhouse sink features a 48 inch Wolf gas range with 6 burners and griddle; double ovens; KitchenAid standmixer; microwave; dishwasher; Sodastream; Nespresso and drip coffee machine; Ninja Blender, and; a wood burning stove with additional cooking surface and oven. Fully equipped with Hexclad pots/pans, Le Creuset and Lodge Dutch ovens and various cooking utensils, this kitchen is ready for chefs and large gatherings. Outside, in the barn, you'll find a double grill BBQ station on wheels that you can move out for grilling while staying in the shade on sunny days. The grill has a practical Santa Maria adjustable add-on for live fire BBQ or height control over your coal.
The original portion of this home was the local general store and post office of the Downings area built in the 1830's. This historic room is a unique place to gather and appreciate the craftsmanship of the era such as the antique counters, the original rustic floors, and the complex mechanism of what was at the time the first elevator in the Northern Neck, visible on the 2nd floor.
The 6 bedrooms provide ample sleeping accommodations for large groups of families and friends up to 17 guests.
Bedroom 1, the primary room: king bed Bedroom 2, the kids' room: 2 sets of bunk beds plus an extra twin mattress (bunk beds are for children only, no adults please) Bedroom 3, the cedar room: queen bed, desk Bedroom 4, the chalet: queen bed Bedroom 5, the blue room: 1 double bed, 1 twin, and twin trundle Bedroom 6, the pink room: king bed

The host and property manager were very attentive and quick to respond and act to every concern and question we had. The farmhouse was perfect for our needs and we enjoyed all the thought that was put into the property to make it so inviting.
Beautiful historic home with upgrades (power, air/heat, bathrooms). House was huge. Lots of large rooms/gathering spaces, bedrooms and beds. Full kitchen with any accesory you would need to make a family meal. Hosts were great to work with.
Our family had a truly wonderful stay at this beautifully restored farmhouse. The home had all the amenities needed. Every room was clean and spacious. This is a great property for families as it has so many games and activities. We would highly recommend and may return in the future!
Our group of 13 (6 adults and 7 kids - ranging from ages 5-15) had a fantastic time at this property. The house is beautifully upkept - the furniture and artwork are lovely and contribute to a great vibe to the house. At the same time, the house is 100% live-able and fun for children. The three living areas, the storehouse room, and the games and activities for kids made it so we were never bored (and never all too on top of each other). The kitchen was also amazing - plenty of room to cook for a large group. There were also plenty of comfortable beds to have us all sleeping soundly with plenty of space for all. The outdoor space was also wonderful. We loved the magnolia tree and the swings. We played badminton and baseball on the lawn and just laid out in the grass and took in all the open space. This is a lovely place to getaway!
We just returned from a stay at this very interesting once-upon-a-time country store. We all were impressed with the thoughtfulness with which you prepare for prospective guests - wood for an outdoor fire pit, a very well-supplied kitchen down to wax paper, spices, garbage bags, newspapers for starting indoor wood stoves, (loved the pot filler over the gas stove in kitchen), games and puzzles of all sorts for all ages, TV's in two rooms for differing tastes, ample towels and wash clothes, three bathrooms which were great for our group number, comfortable beds and bedding (we were one short a twin set for trundle), interesting plant selections making the house feel like a home. The outside as well - furnished with chairs, hammock, tree swing, fire pit, grill although we did not use. Much planning and consideration of others was obvious.
