About the host

The Tranquility House is designed by a Cornell architecture and fine arts major along with her late husband, a Brit who loved the beach and surf fishing, with elegant European sensibility and taste. We put great effort into building the new 1600 sq ft house after the previous 700 sq ft “fishing shack” was wiped out by Sandy. We used renewable material such as bamboo flooring that is scratch and stain resistant; and deck is built from composite recycled material that is hardier and longer lasting than any wood. The cathedral ceiling allows hot air to rise aided by two large fans with reversible function for 3-D cross ventilation, so the temperature can be maintained with minimal energy output. Separate A/C for the entire house from individual heat control in each room to keep energy consumption to a minimum with each person’s comfort zone in mind. We love to cook. Gas cooking brings the best out of food, yet burning gas harms the environment so we added induction rings for heating water and steam cooking. You will find the kitchen to be a chef’s delight, where you can whip up a full meal for the family or serve up quick nibbles for folks at the bar. The open space connects cooking, dining, and entertainment all in one large area to promote social interaction with any group from large to intimate. Lighting is layered and individually control to minimize energy consumption. Outlets are omnipresent and raised for easy access. During temperate seasons, the large windows all around and the double sliding doors promote natural cross ventilation with the bay breeze blowing through out the house. We built our dream house, now sharing our love and creation with you. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Why they chose this property

Toms River is a stone’s throw from Island Beach State Park. We choose Gilford Park for its quiet, down to earth residential neighborhood.

What makes this property unique

The unobtrusive cozy house has a deceivingly grand interior with the open communal area along with spacious bedrooms. Conventional dressers cannot store nor display cloths well, instead we opted for cabinets and large hanging closets to store and display clothing. Easy to find and easy to put away; no need for archeological dig to find that small T-shirt. Lighting is essential for good living, so we put in lots of thoughts into layering the lighting with convenient switches reachable from all parts of the house relevant to the space. Never underestimate the power of remote control, the fans can be operated from anywhere in the house, just don’t forget which remote controls which fan when removed from their wall holder.
