About the host
Hosted by Suzanne Hendler
Suzanne is from Bethesda, MD originally and Juan Luis is from Costa Rica. Suzanne moved to San Francisco in 1999 and JL in 2004. We met salsa dancing in 2006 and have been happily together ever since. We love traveling, designing spaces, and great food, all of which makes us ideal hosts.
Suzanne is an RN by day and also has a thriving ethical business selling authentic Native American jewelry. JL is a contractor extraordinaire and is largely responsible for the beauty of the flat.

Why they chose this property
Hayes Valley has changed a lot for the better since Suzanne bought her home in 1999. It’s always been a strong community of creative people and now it’s even stronger. There are so many wonderful shops, restaurants, and unique things about the area; it’s truly a magical place. Biergarten (outdoor German beer garden with great food), Miette (confectionary store that feels like you’re stepping into a movie set), Arlequin (wine merchant with a lovely back garden), and many more. There’s a playground, tennis and basketball courts, two outdoor gyms, in the summer there are outdoor movies, and on weekends the main blocks of Hayes St are closed to cars for lovely neighborhood strolls. There’s no place else we’d rather live and we can’t wait to share this place with you.
What makes this property unique
This house is a marvel. It was built prior to the famous 1906 earthquake and retains a lot of its original details like ceiling medallions, picture rails, decorative plaster moldings, and old coal-burning fireplace (just for show these days). The flat is light and airy, with 12’ ceilings, a stained glass skylight, and tons of Victorian charm. The kitchen and bathrooms were recently remodeled for ultimate comfort and function.
