About this property

Hand-Crafted Cottage near Gore Mountain and Minerva Lake

Located on a quiet road with open fields and mountain views, this recently renovated cottage is clean, beautifully built, warm and comfortable. All new kitchen with new appliances and zinc countertop, new bath with hand-tiled tub and shower. All wood walls and floors, fine craftsmanship with rustic touches.
Downstairs bedroom with queen bed and upstairs bunkroom with queen and two singles will sleep two couples, or small family comfortably. Also perfect for one or two people who want privacy and peace. We do not cater to large groups - max adults is 5.
Gas furnace plus electric heat in the bathroom to keep showers warm and comfy. A wood stove in the living room with large glass viewing door is perfect for evening relaxation in cool weather.
House is situated on 100 private acres you can roam at will on foot, cross country skis or snowshoes. Trails lead to your own beautiful waterfall behind the house, or across the street to a high bank above Minerva stream with private access for canoe or kayak, or through the woods nearby where we allow New York State to maintain a trail on our property to ponds with a public lean-to if you want to experience Adirondack camping in a lean to 6 miles up the trail on a pond.
Once you arrive, you will be 2 miles from the small hamlet of Olmstedville with its gas station and general store, town museum, several churches and a delightful local restaurant (Li'l Nonny's) with wonderful home style breakfast and lunch until Columbus Day: 8 miles from North Creek with stores, restaurants and bars (we recommend Bar Vino for delicious food and a good wine list), and a slow train to Saratoga Springs. Rafting trips down the Hudson can be arranged in summer months, and there's the exciting White Water Derby the first weekend in May each year on the Upper Hudson River. Nearby Gore Mountain has great skiing during the winter season with biking and gondola trips in warm weather. You are an hour and a half from the Governor's mansion in Albany; two hours from a lovely French restaurant in Montreal; or four hours from NYC for nearly everything else in the world. A train runs between NYC and Montreal with stops in Albany, Ticonderoga, Westport etc. If you want to spend a nite in Canada.

At home in the cottage you may see a deer across the street or an eagle cruising the sky. Watch for Ravens (one of the most intelligent of all birds) doing summer acrobatics, hear coyotes howling after dark in late Summer and Autumn, and come in contact with the occasional owl or fox. You may also spot a bear if you are lucky. They are generally non-agressive unless they have cubs with them - just smile and leave them alone. Do NOT put out food for them!!
The night sky shows the brilliance and beauty of the Milky Way and if you are lucky, the Northern Lights will shine. You are in the middle of a beautiful natural area, yet right on a paved road. We do the snow-shoveling in winter and mow the lawn in the summer.
Natural Stone Bridge and Caves is 10 miles east in Pottersville - great for both kids and adults - you can swim there and see some natural Adirondack caves without special clothing or equipment.
Lots of comfortable climbs are within striking distance in all directions - Crane Mountain in nearby Johnsburg, with great views for a relatively short climb, is our favorite. Vanderwarker is half an hour north on 28N and still has a fire tower with a great view. You can also climb Snider, located behind our caretaker's home, which is walking distance from the house. Just call Duane for permission and instructions - 45 minutes to the top and a nice view of Minerva Valley, Olmstedville and the rolling peaks to the west. Watch for deer and bear scat under the Beech trees.
If you drive north on I-87 the high peaks are magnificent to look at. There are ferries and a bridge that cross Lake Champlain to Vermont. One will take you directly to Burlington, a wonderful, vibrant College city on the lake.
Contact friends or take care of business with free internet and telephone (U.S. and Canada only). Or just kick back and read a good book. Care-taker is down the road a piece if you have a question or need assistance. We opened for business in late 2013 and every guest so far has been pleased - check our 90 five-star reviews. We look forward to your happy stay with us. Marcia and George Halloran

We booked this last minute and I must say it exceeded our expectations! It was the perfect amount of cozy-ness we were looking for and very clean/well kept. The host even had a bottle of wine for us when we arrived. The wood stove was by far our favorite feature of the cottage. The location is great because it's secluded but easy enough to get to the small towns nearby! We will be back for sure! And even a cool little waterfall/stream behind the property that was fun to explore!

Perfect getaway!

We have always loved having the ADK's nearby, and were delighted to find this gorgeous cottage available for a quick, much-needed escape to the woods. We own a large commercial cleaning company, so cleanliness is something we appreciate...this place was spotless and so well maintained. The attention to detail was amazing... will definitely recommend it to friends, and hope to return with our first granddaughter (due in August!). Thank you to the Halloran family! BTW, the waterfall out back was an added treat!!

The cabin had plenty of space for my family of 4. The location was perfect for us. We enjoyed the hike to the private waterfall behind the house. We spent lots of time at the playground at Minerva Beach (just down the road). It was a very nice and comfortable stay.

Simply Amazing

This property is by far the best rental we've encountered. Very clean, awesome location and beautiful views. We sat around the fire one night and ended up gazing at the billions of stars all night. We will definitely be looking into renting this property for our next ADK trip.

Lovely cabin in the woods

This place was so great. So quiet and peaceful yet close to other things. The cabin was fully stocked. The ad says there is a tv, but there isn’t, but you won’t miss watching tv. The views from the cabin were spectacular. And the falls in the back were beautiful. One of our best weekends away. Make sure you look st the stars at night!

Sometimes difficulties reveal the true nature and quality of the person with whom you are working. There was a little bit of stressful confusion at the beginning of our stay, but once we were in contact with Andrew, he took great care of us, straightening out the issue in short order and going beyond our expectations. My wife, four boys and I were very pleased with our stay. The cabin and location are both so beautiful, and upon leaving at the end of our stay, we immediately wondered when we might be able to come back again. It was a very enjoyable time for our family to catch up with each other while the oldest was home briefly from college. It was such a clean, pleasant, welcoming cabin, and we loved exploring the large territory around camp. We all went to the waterfalls behind camp, and some of the boys found another waterfall up into the ajoining state land. Can't say enough good about this place, and of the Hallorans!

A Perfect Adirondack Getaway

Our family of 6 (2 adults and 4 kids between the ages of 5 and 12) loved our time in this cabin! We stayed for four nights in June 2024. The kids especially loved staying in the cozy bedroom upstairs and making s'mores and campfire food and telling stories around the backyard fire pit in the evenings. Another highlight for all of us was the roaring waterfall behind the house, just a 2 or 3 minute walk from the garage. We visited the waterfall almost every day, and one day walked down a marked state trail (the trailhead is near the house) to the top of the waterfall. The house is also located just two miles down the road from a public beach. We went there three times to swim, fish, eat at the snack shop and take advantage of the playground. The house itself was clean and just as described, and it was wonderful to have such a nice place to return to when we returned from each day's adventures!

Beautiful cabin and property!

My girlfriend and I spent a couple nights in this cabin and we really loved it, the pictures online don’t do it justice. It’s way bigger than we thought. It was always warm and cozy and we used the wood burning stove which was a nice touch. It has all the amenities that we needed for cooking and for the bathroom. The washer and dryer were convenient to have as well. The only thing I would say is that the check in time states 2:00pm, so we arrived at that time and the caretaker told us it was at 4:00pm. This is not obvious at first glance and is inside the full check in instructions. Not a huge deal but something to keep in mind. All in all the cabin was perfect for our weekend getaway and we would go back anytime!

Perfect, tidy, cozy, remote cabin - always the perfect escape for us city folks. We’ve been coming every year for the past six years now and can’t wait to return. Look forward to this trip every fall. Love the wood burning stove, the proximity to canoeing spots, the comfy beds and the view of the stars - the lack of light pollution means you can see the Milky Way if the moon’s not too bright!

About the host

Hosted by George Halloran

Host profile image
We are a family of builders and designers, who have enjoyed paying attention to details while upgrading properties in NYS and Florida over the past 40 years. We built our own home nearby that we use mostly in Summer but from time to time in all seasons. Our youngest daughter was married on the riverbank above Minerva Stream a few years back, and the reception was at our house. Our ancestors came to the area in the mid-1800s and many family members, now scattered across the country, still return for visits or family reunions.

Why they chose this property

It is beautiful and comfortable inside, no matter what the weather may be. Outside, you know you are in the Adirondacks where explorers, naturalists, woodsmen and travelers have enjoyed the beauty and solitude for hundreds of years. Yet you are on a paved road a short drive from anything that catches your fancy. We bought this 100-acre parcel because it adjoined our land, and because the former owners were family friends for generations. Marcia and I trimmed Christmas Trees on the O'Connor property, grew potatoes commercially (mom and pop style) on bottomland nearby, and raised bees that produced plenty of sweet honey from wetland flowers. We have visited the waterfall and paddled the stream for 65 years (some of us) and our children and grandchildren are on the same track.

What makes this property unique

Your own waterfall in the back yard. The trail is just to the right of the garage. Private access to Minerva Stream for canoeing and kayaking. A delightful cabin with wood interior finishes and an accent on the Adirondacks where you can just plain relax. If you are here during harvest time and we have a garden going, you are welcome to pick fresh organic corn or beans, or dig a few potatoes for your dinner.
