A great weekend of foliage in Great Barrington

I had such a great stay with a bunch of friends at the Fox Hollow Estate. The house is exactly as described, and very spacious. At no point did I ever feel packed into the house, there are so many activities that you can do around the area. If you're visiting for foliage, the property has wonderful viewpoints and is within a close 20 or less minute drive to the best views. I would gladly stay at the place again if I was in the area.

Lots of space and lots to do near by

I brought a group of friends up for a ski weekend. Finding the place was easy using the very clear directions given before check in. The house was large and the kitchen was well stocked - there were plenty of plates bowls and cups for our large group. Thanks for the great vrbo stay!

Space and location were great. House was stocked well.

It was exactly what we were looking for. Good location and space. Well sticked with everything you would need. Some cabinets were a little older amd didnt close well but that didnt matter to us. Property manager amd owner responded quickly and were easy to deal with.

Wonderful home in excellent location

Wonderful home with all amenities in an excellent location. The only problem was that the WiFi never did work and was not fixed during our stay since the cable company didn't come out over Memorial Day weekend. Hopefully this will get fixed and checked regularly. Otherwise would not hesitate to stay at this property again if coming to the area!

The house is a seven

Some detailing is needed to bring this property up to snuff. New bath mats, a hot tub that has water in it, clear out the dead rodents before the guests arrive, working bathroom lights. Overall the place and location are nice but the details matter.

Weekend in the Berkshires

Nice house, everything you need for a great weekend available. Unfortunately, there is a step up/down into the living area which made it impossible for my 89 year old aunt to access with her walker. There are also 2 steps to enter the house without handrails making it more difficult than anticipated for my aunt or someone with a handicap. Everyone enjoyed the weekend in spite of the 2 aforementioned problems.

Berkshire Family Ski Vacation

When you go away on a ski vacation with the family you have to expect an adventure. This trip did not fail. The house was perfect and met all of our expectations and requirements. We felt comfortable as soon as we walked in the door. That being said my son in law within 30 minutes of arriving broke his leg in the backyard. The property was all ice in the backyard and the front of the house was also treacherous. Somebody dropped the ball maintaining safe entrance ways. Beware of the ice!

Great Property, Difficult Resolution to Problems

We spent a week over Thanksgiving at this property for a family reunion and it was a wonderful time together in this beautiful part of the Berkshires. It’s a beautiful location and the home is well-stocked and comfortable. However, there were problems, some of which continue to remain unresolved, despite assurances to the contrary. Communications with the owner are difficult. When we arrived, the home was not ready or cleaned, beds not made, laundry in the process. The understandably-embarrassed cleaning person did not understand we were arriving that day, despite our reservation. We waited for 1 ½ hours in the basement apt. while the home was cleaned. Then, a couple hours later, a woman came by and said that she had rented the same property during Thanksgiving on a different website. She had family arriving and food had been ordered. I believe she was moved to a condo nearby. The hot tub did not work despite workers coming on 2 separate days. I specifically inquired about the hot tub before arrival. The dishwasher leaked a lot of water on the floor and we had to put a towel down to soak it up. The Master Bedroom door on 1st floor would not close, or lock, as the metal plate on the door frame was missing. We had a wonderful time, but resolving issues with owner are difficult.

NOT a 5 bedroom as promised

When we booked the property in January it was listed as a 5 bedroom, 3 bath home with construction on the lower level to be completed by Memorial Day, so I thought it would definitely be finished by our visit at the end of August. We got no notice from the owner that the construction was not completed for our August arrival. I noticed on the website that the date was pushed back from May to Sept. The only reason we were able to fit comfortably in the existing home was that one couple dropped out. The owner should have informed us of construction delays before it was too late to book another place. The great room, kitchen and dining area are spacious and comfortable. There are two smart TV's in the house, but they are both in the same room. One on the left side and one on the right. The only way the second TV would be useful was if you were a sport fan who watched a second game without sound. Having the smart TV was great in that we were able to access our Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts to watch movies. The hot tub was fun to have and in good working order and the deck was good for relaxing in the evening or for morning tea. The main bedroom on the first floor (queen bed) was comfortable. The two upstairs bedrooms share a bath which was fine. They are cooled with window air conditioners, but the downstairs has central air. The fourth bedroom is a small office with a daybed. Would be fine for a child. We requested the beds upstairs be made up as kings. They just pushed the two twins together and used twin bedding so it really did not function as a king bed. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen is new and well equipped, but the icemaker in the freezer did not work at all while we were there, nor did the wine cooler. Called to report this but no repair person ever came. We bought ice at the store. The home is well located near Lenox and Lee. It is a short drive to all local attractions (Tanglewood, Rockwell Museum etc.) There was a kayak, a canoe and a motorized boat for our use which was nice. The lake and dock area are about a quarter mile away-a pretty easy walk or you can drive down to the dock. Swimming at Lenox town beach is a very short drive. There is an indoor and an outdoor pool at the complex. A short walk or drive from the house. They were very nice and never seemed crowded. Except for not having the extra bed and bath that we booked, the house was comfortable and well located

Shabby chic, but with the emphasis on shabby

Since we had a 10 day rental, we really got to "know" the house. The grill was completely unusable because the gas line was split, something the manager Rick should have seen when checking the house prior to our arrival. It was replaced, but not till we were sorely inconvenienced, and only because we were there so long. The bulb in the downstairs stairway was out, and it was pitch black using the stairs at night. Other bulbs were out. Rick also replaced those, but not for a few days. My husband found and replaced wheels on the lower rack of the dishwasher, which then made the dishwasher usable, since the propeller could not turn initially. The dishwasher was also leaking. He replaced the battery in the upstairs bedroom smoke alarm when it began to beep. He put drain cleaner in the upstairs shower since the screen on the floor was missing and it became clogged. He reinforced two chairs that we on the verge of collapse. Really? We paid to rent the house and my husband became the handyman. Then the handle in the downstairs shower spun around but would not turn off the water. We could only turn the water off at the shower head. When I reported this new problem to Rick his response was, "Sorry for this problem." I was sorry too but expected him to come by and repair it, which he did not. The bulbs in the refrigerator and under the microwave were out. The house was well equipped and located but very poorly maintained, and frankly, I did not sign on for that. So, if you rent this house, just be prepared.

Family reunion

The home was clean, spacious, beautiful, well appointed, in a fabulous setting. We were thrilled with the pool table, natural environment, location, hot tub, architectural design, and hospitality of the host. He even had wine to greet us cooling in the refrigerator. I highly recommend this as a welcome, hospitable home for anyone.

Lovely but.......

The property was fine. Plenty of room, very comfortable for a family gathering. Location of the house was perfect. The issues were that we were there with young children and the listing notes an indoor pool. To my knowledge there isn't one. I was not able to connect with the owner to clarify this and had to make alternate arrangements. Also the basement lights did not work, I called the answering service and no one returned my call so we were without lights in the large space downstairs. As someone else mentioned, sprucing up bathmats, towels, fixing cabinets off hinges etc would certainly make for a cleaner appearance.

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely home. There is plenty of space for a large group. 3 full baths was great for our group of 10 girls! Hot tub had a couple of issues but property manager did try to offer quick solutions & did send somebody to try to fix it. Overall we would return & recommend this place.

Great Christmas with family

The house was spacious and exactly as portrayed on the profile. Everyone enjoyed the fireplace and billiard table. It was especially convenient that the family room was separate (not under or above) the sleeping areas. This allowed the young children to sleep undisturbed by their older family members. We all quarantined and had our COVID tests prior to arrival, giving us peace of mind as we gathered. The local property manager was very helpful and responsive.

Not a great setup for a family

We mostly enjoyed our stay at Howard's. The set up is not really great for a family, as the "master" which is a queen without an en suite is on the main floor, and there is a one bedroom downstairs and two with twins upstairs. But the kids loved the pool table, and we enjoyed the jigsaw puzzle. The hot tub was cold upon arrival, whicih was a real letdown for us as we had alll been very much looking forward to getting in on the drive there.. But I spoke with Howard and he told me to try flippinig the circuit which I did and we were able to go in the next morning.

About the host

Hosted by Howard Eisler

Host profile image
My wife and I have been coming to the Berkshires for over 35 years. I've done some real estate, buy sell and renovate in NY Metro, Killington, VT and the Berkshires. We used to own at Lakeside Condo's for about 10 years on the same Fox Hollow estate before we went into the Ski Lodge business in Killington, VT. Now we've retired to Florida for about 7mos. a year and just had to come back to the Berkshires for the other 5 mos. We have another place in Lenox.

Why they chose this property

This property was just far to good. Westinghouse built the first electric house in SW Massachusetts less than a 1000 feet away. Vanderbilt bought it and built a bunch of buildings on the property for the private use of his family.. Overlooking Laurel Lake from the hill top are by far some of the best views in the area. When you talk about Berkshire locations this is about the best. Present day facilities on the premises that we have access to (no extra charges) include indoor and outdoor pools, club house, gym, tennis courts and of course 1000 feet of Lake front on Laurel Lake ready for fishing, canoeing and swimming with our own supplied boats and rafts.

What makes this property unique

This is the one of two single family unattached private home on the 220 acre Fox Hollow Estate that has ever been offered for short term rentals. This unique piece of real estate is awesome. As you take a short walk to the adjoining gardens at the Edith Wharton estate either on the horse back riding trails or by the lake route you will feel the draw that brought the Tycoons to this property. Centrally located to all Berkshire activities and wow what a vacation we have in store for you.
