Perfect location

This house is in a perfect location if you like to walk, it’s just a short walk to downtown and the ocean. The house is in a nice neighborhood and was well-equipped. It was clean, beds were comfortable and has a private backyard. We already have a reservation for 2 weeks next summer.

Sweet Retreat

Susan and Matt are well organized and streamlined in the rental process. Very clear directions on Checking and entry etc. Property is an old craftsman style lots of charm. They’ve done a nice job working with it while updating. Air conditioning which we needed for that rare 90’s week in Maine. Easily walkable to Main Street and time the museum and boat put in. Super clean!!

Great for families with young children

Convenient, nice big house, all equiped including gear for babies and toodlers. It was a really great stay, we will do it again. The area is lovely, the house is closed to the beach. The kids loved the chocolate factory and the local lobster market at Jesse.

Central Maine Coast Getaway

Stayed at this property for our Maine vacation. The location was perfect, centrally located so we could travel both North and South on the coastline for day trips and get back to a comfortable stay. Rockland was also Had a lot to offer. Would recommend this property!

Weekend Getaway in Maine

The house is nice with lots of room. It was only the two of us but there is ample room for more. The location is close to the coast. We enjoyed going to Rockland, Camden, and Searsport (one hour north) to do some exploring and window shopping. We had a nice hike when the weather was nice at the nature preserve over near Owl's Head. We will be happy to stay here again the next time we are up this way.

Great Mid-Coast Maine Rental

This south end Rockland home provides a nice space in an authentic neighborhood. I especially loved that the house has lots of windows, several comfy beds, a cheerful kitchen and a fenced in backyard. The decor was very pleasant. The hosts respond to any questions quickly too. We would definitely rent here again.

Maine vacation 2019

We stayed 4 nights and traveled to Acadia, Portland, Bangor and traveled the coast line. This location was optimal, everything we needed was there. The house is located just approximately 1.5 blocks from the bay and the neighborhood was both safe and picturesque. We were able to walk to town to shop and eat and to the docks to take the most relaxing private sail with our family. At the end of Crescent street by the bay is a sign for day sails, was one of the highlights of our trip. Our family fell in love with Rockland and will definitely be back and stay here again.

Great Vacation Rental

This was a great house and was bigger in person than it appeared in the pictures. The hosts were very responsive to questions both before and during our time there. It's very close to the water/boardwalk and walkable to Main Street in town for dinner. Highly recommend it!

Generally very good but a few negatives

Shell Cottage is in a great location and has a lot going for it. It is spacious and well provisioned in terms of facilities and we enjoyed our stay. The negatives should be seen in the context of offering views on what could be done to improve the stay. The downstairs bathroom needs to be remodelled as the shower inside the bathtub is not too pleasant as the shower curtain insists on attaching itself to you! Perhaps remove the tub and turn it into a wet room? There is a lot of downstairs space but it is not used to its maximum. Another sofa or comfortable armchairs could easily fit in the first "sitting" room and afford plenty of seating where it would be easy to relax and chill. I hope the suggestions are helpful but nonetheless we thank the owners for giving us the chance to stay here 😀

The Seashell Cottage was a great choice for us, very relaxing. The neighbors were wonderful people.

Rockland was the perfect spot to have as a home base for our day trips to Rockport, Camden, Belfast, and as far as Bar Harbor/Acadia. The Seashell Cottage made it even better. It is a wonderful old home with plenty of space to spread out. We were able to make fresh Lobster with the provided pots, but also close enough to walk easily to Archers on the Pier to let someone else do the cooking.

About the host

Hosted by Susan Lockery

Host profile image
My husband, Mat, and I met about 15 years ago while attending law school in Boston and we currently live and work in Connecticut. We've always dreamed of owning a vacation home in Maine and so we purchased the Sea Shell Cottage in 2014.

Why they chose this property

When we were looking for a vacation home we wanted to be within walking distance of the cultural activities that Rockland has to offer visitors. There are restaurants, shops, art galleries and museums all within a very short walk from the Sea Shell Cottage.

Rockland's South End is truly a special place to visit. Guests can enjoy Sandy Beach (1-2 blocks from the Sea Shell Cottage) or take a stroll on the Boardwalk along Rockland Harbor...also just a couple blocks from the Cottage.

What makes this property unique

The Sea Shell Cottage is not just an ordinary rental. Since we purchased the property, we have worked to make this a vacation place that our guests can truly enjoy! The home has been decorated in seaside decor with a unique contemporary style. The Sea Shell Cottage's floor plan can accommodate large families, or as little as 1 or 2 guests. The home has an inviting coastal ambiance that is sure to remind guests that the sea is very close by!
