Great location for Hells Canyon tour

This is a fun property for a large group. My only complaint was it smelled bad/musky in the rooms.

Awesome Hosts

Theresa and Mr. Frank were awesome hosts. They were very knowledgeable about the area and gave us lots of good places to go to which made our 7 night stay so enjoyable and memorable. The rafting trip that Theresa arranged for us was the best part of the trip for both adults and children in our group. They were also very patient with us and the children in our group felt so welcomed and cared for by them, especially our 5 year old?, Malcolm. He misses Mr. Frank. The house was beautiful and in a very quiet spot. Early morning coffee with Mr. Frank was always a treat. The kids enjoyed the goats and the horses and the chickens and especially Penny the pig. Thank you very much Theresa and Mr. Frank for the timbre you silent with us and for making our annual family vacation very memorable.

A Family Dream Vacation

We had a wonderful time at the lodge. The owners were absolutely wonderful especially to our 3 year old grandson. Frank and Terri made sure he got to collect eggs, met Penny the Pot Belli Pig, rode a horse, and just treated him special. It was magical for all of us. I would suggest a little updating on the listing as it is not a Bed and Breakfast now. It is a vacation home rental. We would definitely go back again! Perhaps next year with our new granddaughter.

A unique and fun place to stay!

Our group had a great time at the White Bird Summit Lodge. Terri and Frank are very accommodating and friendly hosts. The setting is beautiful, the beds are very cozy and the lodge decor will keep you entertained for hours just looking around. We brought our own food for 20 people and the facilities were easily adequate to prepare and enjoy meals together. The setting and surrounding area showcase the best that Idaho has to offer, from rivers and streams to rolling hills and mountain ranges. All of the animals at the ranch are well loved and taken care of. We will be back!

About the host

Hosted by Theresa Schmitz

Host profile image
We came west for the mountains,” said Frank and Terri Schmitz. The couple, originally from Wisconsin, now own and reside at the White Bird Summit Lodge. Originally operated as a Bed and Breakfast for the past 20 years have changed it over to a Vacation rental property.

Open since 2000, the Lodge sits a mile east of Highway 95’s White Bird Pass. At about 4,300 feet above sea level, the two-story structure affords the Schmitz's and their guests a breathtaking view of mountains -- and more mountains. Thirty or so years ago, before the current highway between Grangeville and White Bird was straightened and widened, a meandering Highway 95 ran right by where the Schmitz's now live. The Great Room is filled with comfortable furniture, wildlife art and taxidermy displays. Off one side of the room, French doors open to a spacious sunroom with windows overlooking the canyon. One wall replicas a rock wall that includes a built-in Fishtank. Bringing the outdoors indoors the wall fits right into the wildlife theme. This is another adventure of Frank and Terri's. The manufacture simulated rock panels for building these rock walls. Off of the other, Frank and Terri's private accommodations entry to the Africa room, Where Frank would love to tell you stories about all their Africa trips. Other amenities include an outdoor BBQ and bar garden. Lower level guestrooms – except for the Wisconsin Room that reflects the Schmitz's roots – sports names like Wisconsin room ‘World Travel ,’ ‘Buffalo Bill,’ ‘Mexican Fiesta room.’ Three of the rooms have private patios. All have private baths. “Frank’s had lots of fun with things like putting a stone shower stall with swinging half doors and a ‘rainwater’ shower head in the Buffalo Bill room,” Terri says.

Why they chose this property
